had the opportunity to complete my first commission in a WHILE (info available via my ko-fi) and this was SUCH A TREAT <3 got to read a lovely fic and make art for it.... what's better than this????

both drawings are from @sammy-witha-c 's fic "smoke and mirrors" which was such a GOOD FIC <3 it's a really grounded portrayal of trans henry that deals with dysphoria, etc. in a genuine, empathetic way + has amazing character interactions and dialogue. the sketch of the twins was not actually part of the comm but the scene cracked me up so much that i HAD to draw it. my beautiful boys <3

Lark and Sparrow know something is going on with their dad. He’s been able to heal them lately, which is new. What was a contest to see who could cause an injury to themselves that their dad couldn’t heal, turns very real when they’re driving back from a camping trip and hear about a rising zombie apocalypse. With all the families scattered, Henry tries to reunite everyone and bring them to safety, even if that means separating the boys from everyone else.

This story follows the boys growing up in an apocalypse and trying to find a life for themselves that is more than just surviving the day. The fic is about the characters making the best of their new life more than it is about fighting zombies.

Perspectives are from the twins with some Henry sprinkled in at major junctures (all third person).

I got 6 requests for a mundane AU but then when I tried bullying @sammy-witha-c into writing me fanfic, they accidentally got me to write a zombie au instead jsdfhgjfdsg. So you can blame them!!!!!

As usual I’ll only be posting in the tag about this at the beginning, maybe about halfway through, and then at the end! It’s estimated at about 20 chapters, and the first two chapters are up for your potential enjoyment now. There is a giant note at the front of the fic about what to expect from the fic, including how to get spoilers for it.

Scary is sooooo a true crime girl, what a problematic fav... In general I just find a lot of this song almost feels like it's in her voice, especially the stuff about the anger of the unfairness of it all and the desperation for connection.

Hmmm this one is a little hard to explain. It's like. There's a dead girl in the pool and it's actually you and it's your past self and you're watching her float away and you miss her / and you hate her / and you don't want to tell anyone because that would be admitting that used to be you but it hurts to see her not have a proper burial. She's still in you. You know?

Okay so this is less ABOUT Normal and more a song I think Normal would like!! This is a rendition of the song "Daisy Bell" with three computer voices doing a lil trio, one of which is a reanimation of the first computer to 'sing'!!!. The fact that it's a song about love but it's sung by computers, which are made by people's love and wonder and hope, but can objectively not feel it just. Makes me so emo. And I think it would make him pretty emo too :)

NO NO WAIT transgender Henry Oak actually means SO much to me. I don’t know it just adds so much to his character I think. Like…

Henry loves nature. Henry loves Earth. So he gets transported away from the Forgotten Realms and onto Earth and he decides to start transitioning, right, and it’s such a hard choice for him because he finds beauty in all things living and he wants to find beauty in himself but he isn’t happy with his body as it is. He isn’t happy with how it represents him. 

We need to see the fucking amazing potential in a transphobic Barry. Guys are you telling me Barry “keep your shit in check and act calm all the time and repress everything and go with nature / the natural way of things” Oak WOULDN’T be SUCH a good narrative foil for Henry who wants to be loved by his father but also wants to be nothing like his father LIKE…. GUYS. GUYS. Henry’s story is so incredibly transgender I’m thinking about it so hard. 

So he starts transitioning and you know what. You know what happens? Henry starts to look exactly. Like. Barry. Not in everything- Barry doesn’t have his sunburn / tan, Henry’s more expressive than Barry ever is. But the resemblance is fucking uncanny. Henry used to be able to find his mom in his femininity but now all he sees is his dad. He tries to get as far away from “Hen” and Barry as possible and only ends up feeling like he got closer. He parents his boys in the exact opposite way Barry parented him but still feels like a fuck-up. 

And then. And guys I really am freaking out here. Henry gets back to the Forgotten Realms, and all the sudden- he’s alone with these people he doesn’t know. He’s trans. He’s off his testosterone shots. He’s already Different from the other dads(PARALLELS TO HIM BEING THE ONLY ONE WITH POWERS). It’s a lot for him okay. And then. 

He discovers his dad is one of the purple cloaked people. 

Henry is off his T-shots. Henry’s body starts to change- his fat deposits are shifting, he’s not growing his beard anymore, and none of it is sudden but it’s still upsetting. Henry transitions as a way to express who he is(i.e. becoming as different from Barry as possible because Barry had expectations for who he should be) but then gets sucked back to his dad and his hard work starts coming undone. Take my Henry-gets-his-period-back the night that they rescue the kids and find out who the purple cloak people are headcanon and THINK ABOUT IT because I certainly am!! 

Henry is transgender. Henry comes back to the Forgotten Realms; he starts detransitioning against his will, and his confidence he built up about who he is starts to fade as he remembers his dad and his past and his Difference. Henry is transgender. 

Lark and Sparrow look just like him. They look like what he’s built up, what he’s worked for- they act how Henry wanted to be when he was young and not yet used to the rules. They love nature and Henry watches them love life- they’re rowdy and chaotic but they’re happy. They’re so happy. 

They look nothing like Barry.

I have now seen The Last Five Years, a movie adaptation of a musical by the same time, twice, both times very late at night in my bedroom and both times when I was trying to work on a craft or something but ended up having to stop so I could just watch the damn movie. 

And it is such a strange movie guys. I struggle to call it good because it doesn't feel like a good movie? But it isn't bad either, and it isn't average because it's very unique but it's just. It's a very interesting movie I think. It's just very interesting. 

It's about Cathy and Jamie, a couple, and it has two POVs. One is Cathy's, who shows the very end of their relationship and goes backwards to the beginning, and one of Jamie's, which shows the very start of the relationship and goes to the end. And I think it's interesting because every time Jamie or Cathy sings, it isn't to themselves. In most musicals we have a couple songs just about the characters and what they want. We don't have that. Cathy sings TO Jamie, Jamie sings TO Cathy, and when they aren't singing to each other they're singing to some imaginary person like they're trying to convince themselves of something. We hear Cathy sing about how Cathy does, sometimes, feel as though she's a prop in Jamie's career, but it's okay because she reminds herself that she's a part of something big. We think, okay, these are her true feelings; but then it's revealed she's saying all these things in an interview. Jamie sings about how yes, he sees other women and does wish he could have sex with them, but it’s not a problem, just a challenge, as if trying to convince himself that’s true; then, at the end of the song, he texts Cathy that’s he’ll pick her up soon, while staring at his co-worker getting ready to leave. 

This is a movie that is covered in subtext and that you have to really watch and sort through in order to get it all. Jamie is aware Cathy doesn’t want to be just a good-bye note as someone leaves to further their career since it’s happened to her before. Cathy knows Jamie is cheating on her, which she only comes out about after he’s been cruel towards her again and shut down her attempts at fixing their relationship. Neither knows where the relationship went wrong and that’s simply because neither were truly looking between the lines. 

Or, rather: Cathy knew it was falling apart and put her energy into trying to fix it, which only made Jamie feel as though nothing was wrong because she was filling all the holes with cement. He broke up with her only because she was starting to get frustrated and try to talk to him about the cracks.
