I was asked by a friend yesterday if I could offer basic tips about comic paneling. As it turns out, I have a lot to say on the matter! I tried breaking down the art of paneling using the principles of art and design, and I hope it helps you out!

This whole thing was very much cranked out in a few hours so I had a visual to talk about with a friend! If this gives you a base understanding of paneling, that's awesome! Continue to pull in studies from the comics you see and what other artists do well and don't do well! You can tell paneling is doing well when the action is flowing around in its intended reading format.

Here's the link to the globalcomix article from which I pulled the images about panel staggering! Someone sent in a reblog that it wasn't totally clear that the 7th slide mostly covers what NOT to do in regards to staggering, and that is my mistake!

I saw in a tag that someone was surprised I used MamaYuyu too, and I don't blame them lol. If I had given myself more than a couple hours maybe I would have added something else on, I just really admire MamaYuyu's paneling personally.

uh uh, final append: I am by no means a renowned master of paneling, so if you find anything off base here, by all means, counter it with your own knowledge and ways you can build upon from here! Art is always a sum knowledge of everything we find. 💪

hot artists don't gatekeep

I've been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard

Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

Okay I JUST realized I never posted these on here—- BUT BASICALLY, about a year and a half ago I started doing these experimental black hairstyle posts that were threads long on Twitter, to give artists a source of inspo for their black ocs whose hair they wanted to try something new with! There’s more to black hair than just the selected styles portrayed in media, and I thought it would be fun to show people how much texture, shape, fades, length, and style can be combined when drawing black hair—-cause it’s a kind of manipulation our hair can do irl! Hey kid you want a job?

Great get online and go to a job board. Indeed, Linkedin whatever. Now you're gonna search for a role that's in your city, fits your qualifications, and doesn't seem like a bad time.

See that easy apply button? Don't hit it they just throw those in the trash. Now you're gonna want to go to the company's website and check their careers page.

Oh? That job doesn't exist anymore. Cool go back to the job board and find another one.

Great you found another job, you're on the company's career page and the job exists!! So you're going to need to make an account on the career page website. They're using Workday, the same site as the last job you applied for? Who cares? You need to make another account for THIS job's workday page.

Now you're going to upload your resume. That'll autopopulate about 15 boxes with everything on your resume, except formatted wrong and with tons of errors. So just go through and painstakingly check the dates on all of that and rewrite everything you already laid out in an aesthetically pleasing format on your resume.

Ok time for the cover letter, explain why this specific job and company are deeply important to you. You love their mission statement and wouldn't even laugh if their ceo was gunned down in the street. You'll really want to reiterate the things you just spent the last 20 minutes filling out on the resume section

(Remember to include language from the job description, people who work in HR are lower than dogs and they need patterns or they get confused.) Write about a page, but hey don't sound too desperate or robotic this is where they judge your character!

Maybe add your portfolio site at the end here, who knows if that helps no one has ever clicked mine haha.

Anywayyy time to hit apply! Congrats! You'll see that confirmation email come in and you should be getting the rejection letter in about 2 weeks. Unfortunately your resume didn't have the right buzzwords and the AI auto rejected you :(

What do you all study when you're doing art studies??

About ten, fifteen years ago I wrote a story about a guy living in a Capitalist dystopia. His walls, furniture, and tableware are all covered in smart displays. Basically animated wallpaper. It's sold as being able to turn your room or objects into anything - A nice forest view, outer space, a fantasy realm... but the companies that run this stuff keep sneaking ads in.

It gets so bad he's always being woken up by adverts that offer insomnia cures and better bedding that play when he tries to sleep.

So he buys the ad-free tier, and it's great... for a few months. And then he starts getting adverts from 'premium partners'. So he goes up a level... and the same thing happens.

So he jailbreaks his wallpaper and sends all the ad servers to 0.0.0.0 and voila... he can sleep.

Until this SWAT team blows his door off and drag him off to jail. The Ad companies are suing him for loss of revenue for the products he' notionally have bought if he'd watched their adverts, based on some weird 'The average consumer buys X products with an average value of Y' calculation.

The judge is like 'well I dun wanna annoy the sponsors' so he RICO's this guy's house and possessions and sends him to jail.

... which is a nice relaxed non-volent offender jail for the corporately disenfranchised. But because these people have no money... there's no ads and now he's happy because the only place he's free... is in prison.

Which at the time was a bit much and now it's like: Called it.

Elon's suing companies for not advertising because he's losing revenue. He's also cranking the price of Ad Free Twitter. Disney and Amazon play adverts on their paid service when services used to be free because of the adverts... and now you have to pay to watch the adverts or go up a couple of tiers.

And google's going around freaking out about ad-blockers.

Have a sketch dump featuring the Olympic Trio! This was an attempt to find a style that would make them quicker to draw, and the result was something sort of cartoonish, which I like.

A little mini comic featuring my headcanons of their heights. I like to think the Flagbearer's height is static, because their divine domain is steadfast, and because they were played by only one actor. In contrast, the Torchbearer's height changes slightly, making them slightly taller or shorter on any given day. It's not very much in the grand scheme of things, but it is enough that the Torchbearer and Flagbearer trade who is taller. I drew this from the Torchbearer's many actors, and because, in my AU, they represent a wider breadth of humanity. The Voyager is taller than both of them, all the time. I wanted them to wear ballet slippers, because their actor is a dancer, and it gives them even more height.

And my idea for the Voyager's eye. I think they are segmented like a beetle's, but colored as if they have preserved the image of every interstellar vista the Voyager has seen. There's not a great way to make the effect I want, but I chalk it up to the human mind being unable to fully capture the image of spirits, which I have more ideas for, but that's a post for another night.

i heard this song again a while back and i thought it would be perfect to redraw for the torchbearer- exceeept my version of the phantom doesn't really fit the song. (and my version of the phantom doesn't have eyes. or a mouth. or a face, really-)

so, i borrowed @samsilver975's phantom from Memento Viviere for this ^^ i thought it fits the song, and it's one of my favorite fics for torchbearer & flagbearer after all i hope the way i drew them matches what they look like in the fic (the eyes, mostly)? i tried...

God Speed, Silver Knight

Hey y'all, in lieu of another fic, the muses decided to inspire a more visual sort of art featuring our favorite characters. I was inspired by Edmund Leighton's Godspeed, one of a series of highly romanticized portrayals of courtly love and knights he did. The poses are essentially one for one, but I found experimenting with the folds of fabric to be a really enjoyable exercise. This is just a very early draft; hopefully I can get a completed, colored version out this weekend. I hope you enjoy!

Hey Guys, anyone call for a sequel? Because I wrote one. Our little alien friend needed some Ao3 love, so I filled the gap.

The Golden Voyager has travelled the width and breadth of the universe, delighting in the marvels of reality. They’ve never returned to the same place twice… until now. When they suddenly return to Paris, left inexplicably stranded, they realize how long it’s been since they’ve been stationary and discover how truly exhausting constant travel has been. Perhaps Paris’s other spirits might provide them with the moment’s respite they need.

I will keep this fandom alive even if I have to drag its cold corpse to a necromancer.

With the Olympiad completed, the Phantom Torchbearer assumes that themself and the Silver Knight will cease to exist, returning to the darkness between life and death. But when they wake to find themself imperceivable to humans but still very aware and alive, they and the Knight must reckon with the consequences of existence, and what it means to be a conscious symbol of humanity. Which, of course, means confronting the idea of spending eternity together.

Is this cursed? No clue. This took me a disturbingly significant chunk of time.
