Car project evaluation
I enjoyed this project overall especially the research into Sennen Cove and the modelling of the landscape. I found it interesting learning about history of the area I was basing my area of race tract on. Also picking landmarks from the area to include on race track design was cool and challenging. The part of the project I didn’t like so much was the modelling of the Jeep because I found it very difficult in comparison to the designing of the landscape. The design was much more detailed and larger so it required a lot of editing in particularly for the bonnet, wheels and back of the vehicle. I also found the planning of the tile hard and slightly confusing. Creating 3D layout view on 3DS Max because it was challenging having to draw curved lines over the images of the landscape and then attaching them to one another. It became repetitious and if I was inaccurate in replicating the landscape then I would have to start again. I managed to complete most of the vehicle and the landscape designs but for the tile I still needed to model and implement some of the landmarks and road. The vehicle is not textured and the modelling isn’t completely finished.

- Write up of team building challenge ( Spaghetti & Marshmallows) The results from the teamwork roles quiz before the challenge and afterwards.
I took the Belbin test which is a behavioural examination designed to determine your role within a team. I discovered that I’m partly a shaper and a monitor evaluator: A shaper is someone who’s challenging, dynamic and thrives on pressure. They have the drive and courage to overcome obstacles. But they can be prone to provocation and can from time to time offend people’s feelings. A monitor evaluator is a level headed, strategic and sharp person who sees all options and judges accurately. But they may lack the drive and ability to inspire others within their team.
- A thorough investigation into 2 career paths in the games industry, 1 technical, 1 artistic. These should include a range of information from the qualifications required, to skills and personality traits etc.
A 3D programmer is an example of a technical job within the games industry. It involves coding, artificial intelligence, interaction design, graphics and sound. To work in this career you would need qualifications and skills in the following areas: computer science, mathematics, physics and graphic design.
An artistic job within the games industry is a 3D Modeller. This involves the designing and creating of landscapes, animations and characters. Qualifications and skills you would be expected to have in order to work in this field would be in graphic design, 3D design and art. Ideal skills would be the ability to visualise designs in 3D, illustrating and IT skills, the ability to read and understand plans and technical drawings, practical skills to use hand and power tools and a methodical, thorough and patient approach.
- 2 case studies written up from members of the industry in the roles you have researched. Discussing how they reached their current position etc.
Peter Molyneux is an English video games programme. He was awarded an OBE for his work within the video game industry. Hes known for creating the “god games”: Populous, Dungeon Keeper and Black & White.
His career began in 1982 when he began selling floppy disks containing video games thinking this would make them sell better. But eventually he realised that the video games were the main selling point.
In 1984 he created The Entrepreneur a text based business simulation game. He was convinced he would sell loads of copies of the game but only received two orders. In 1987 he created Bullfrog Productions and in 1989 Populous one of his first games was published which sold over 4 million copies. Electronic Arts/EA Bullfrogs publisher purchased shares in the company and Molyneux went on to become the vice president and consultant of EA in 1994. Molyneux suddenly left Bullfrog in July 1997 and founded Lionhead Studios shortly after the release of Dungeon Keeper.
Molyneux later came up with the idea for Lionhead's first game Black & White in 1997, three years later in 2001 in was released. In April 2006, Lionhead Studios was acquired by Microsoft Game Studios. In June 2009, Molyneux was promoted to Creative Director of Microsoft Game Studios in Europe, although he continued to produce video games with Lionhead Studios. In March 2012, Molyneux announced that he would be leaving Lionhead and Microsoft after the completion of Fable: The Journey to begin work at a company founded by former Lionhead Studios CTO called 22Cans.
Hideo Kojima is video games designer/3D modeller born in Japan. He is one of the most famous video game designers on the planet widely known for the metal gear series. He was inspired by games like Super Mario Bros 1985 and The Portopia Serial Murder Case 1983 and tried to join the video games industry but his ideas were rejected until eventually he joined the video game publisher Konami's in 1986 as a designer and planner. He found the assignments boring and disappointing and wanted to work on Nintendo entertainment systems and arcade games instead.
After working on a couple of projects he was asked to take over a project called metal gear. Which had suffered from hardware limitations. Kojima changed the genre of the game from combat orientated to more escapism. The game was released in 1987.
The next project he worked on was the adventure game Snatcher released in 1988. It only sold a couple of thousand units because of its teen rating.
During the 1990s Kojima was mainly involved in two projects Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and SD Snatcher. In the late 90s he worked on several more games but they were not too successful.
Throughout the 2000s he continued to work on the Metal Gear Solid series and developed a new game series called Bokta. In April 2011 Kojima was promoted to Executive Vice President and Corporate Officer in Konami Digital Entertainment and in 2013 he released Metal Gear Solid V the final game of the series. Since then he has been working with Silent Hills and Sony Computer Entertainment. Over his career he and the games he has worked on have won various awards such as Game Developers Conference Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, The Game Awards Industry Icon Award in 2016 and in 2015 Metal Gear Solid V won the awards for Best Action Game and Best Score/Soundtrack at The Game Awards.
- A discussion of your 'dream' job within the industry and why.
My dream job within the gaming industry would be a 3D Modeller because it involves a lot of creative designing such as sketching, technical drawing and making 3D models. Which is one of my strengths within the industry and I enjoy those type of tasks.
- 5 long term goals based on your researched on how you are going to achieve that.
-complete level three qualification
-complete higher level qualification in this field
-apply for jobs within this area of the video games industry
-become competent using 2D and 3D design software
-gain work experience in this sector
- 5 short term goals to help you achieve it.
-practise using 2D design software
-practise using 3D design software
-practise drawing techniques
-experiment with designing tools and methods
-attend classes relevant to these skills
- A brief summary and discussion of how you will aim to improve your skills and meet you targets during the curse of the next project.
Practise and experiment with various methods and techniques. Also dedicate myself to tasks.

Barrel modelling challenge
Barrel texture Photoshop:
Rust texture:

Rusting holes:

Dripping rust texture:

Scratches textures:

Peeling paint texture:

I created the barrel surface by layering images of metal textures on top of one another. I used the magic wand tool to remove the backgrounds and unnecessary pieces of the images. Then I lowed the opacity and size of the rubber tool to fade some areas of the textures so that the images blend well together. I also used the angle and size tool to rotate and resize some of the images.

Barrel design, 3Ds Max:
I designed this barrel by first creating a cylinder with eighteen sides then using the swift loop tool I added two lines at the top, bottom and four on the lower and upper area of the barrel. Then I used the bevel tool to inset and extrude the edges outwards to make the design look more like a barrel. Finally I added a hole at the top of the barrel by insetting a circle in the middle then moving it to the front of the barrel. Next I insetted a slightly smaller circle within the first one then I extruded the outer area between the two circles upwards. Then I deleted the circle creating a hole.

Road Sign Modelling
No entry and 40 mph signs modelling, unwrapping and texturing challenge.
I created these two designs by first making two tall slim cylinders. Which were to be the poles of the signs (the no entry sign pole is shorter than the 40 mph one). Next I added the sign plates by creating three very short cylinders then rotating them 90 degrees and positioning them at the top of the poles (there are two plates on the 40 mph sign, one on each side and there're slightly smaller than on the no entry sign). Finally I used a standard material to applied the metal texture to the poles and the signs to the plate.

Texture used on the sign poles:
