Having ousted the previous pro-Byzantine Doge in 804, Doge Obelerio agreed to recognize Frankish sovereignty over the inheritance of Rome in exchange for protection against Venice's Byzantine overlord. Now, a year later, the Doge goes to the court in Aachen to pay homage and take a Frankish bride.

Caught in the tension, Venice meets the self proclaimed Empire.

Dual Rule

I'd like to thank @arschbiene for allowing me to play with Dietrich!

This idea sprung from DMs where we talked about the differences (and similarities) in our characters and where those interpretations come from. It's been lovely, and one particular AU that emerged was one where the two are twins, representing different historical and cultural aspects of the Margraviate alongside each other. It's a cool way of externalizing conflicts and insecurities that were usually internal for both characters, and getting some comedy out of their very grating personalities.

The reference image I used, of the Margraves Otto III. the Pious and Johann I., who ruled the Margraviate together and began the tradition of Ascanian Margraves peacefully splitting their rule between all their sons. It miraculously worked well!

Roderich being kind of a fake person/having a made up aristocratic/snobby persona actually makes a lot of sense when I think of the story around the privilegium maius that made Austria an archduchy.

The privilegium maius was a series of faked documents in the 14th century made up by Rudolph IV so he and his duchy Austria could get more privileges because otherwise he would've been excluded from the cool kids club (princes electors, those who could vote or even become the next emperor)

Therefore Roderich's entire existence as an archduchy and country where the emperors mostly came from was made from Rudolph's "fake it til you make it" attitude. It might have put a lot of pressure on teenage Roderich and idk I like to think that's when he started being insecure about his looks (wearing corsets, fake glasses and styling his hair intentionally and feeling bland without all those things that change his appearance) and when he started to build his fake persona that wears off when he's at home and alone.

The knowledge that a staggering amount of knowledge about the west slavic tribes was lost and an even more staggering amount of what we do know was written either by saxons (read: widukind of corvey) or franks VS the desire to give every north/east German state OC a pagan origin to honor what little we do know VS the knowledge that a lot of the legal structures that these states originated from were already formed under the growing influence of Holy Roman and Polish crusades
