For the first day of school I had the students write out any questions they had for me that I didn't answer in class. So here we go!
Question: "How old are you? "
Mr. Santos: My age is as simple to solve as this math problem... (bonus points if you don't use a calculator!)
58 x ( 4-2) / 4 - 1
Question: "Do you like Pizza?"
Mr. Santos: Do birds enjoy flying? Is water wet? Do dogs like bones? Is the sun very very hot?
Question: "Do you live in a house or an apartment?"
Mr. Santos: I live in a house. We do not pass out good candy to Trick-or-Treaters... we give HOMEWORK!!!!
Question: "Do you have any pets?"
Mr. Santos: Yes, we have many. We have a duck, giraffe, triceratops, monkey (rainbow colored), T-Rex, cats, bunny rabbits, and Stitch (from the movie). All of these creatures are very sweet and cuddly... and do not require food or water... the best kind of pets!!
Question: "Is it always this cold in your room?!"
Mr. Santos: If you were to compare the temperature of my room to the North Pole (where Santa makes toys), then no.... I think my room would be considered "toasty!"
Question: "What is your favorite color?"
Mr. Santos: I like red, but I mostly wear shades of blue. Both of these colors are against student dress code... sorry!
Question: "Are we gonna have fun in this class?"
Mr. Santos: I hope so! I enjoyed school when I was a student because it was fun. And guess what, I enjoy teaching because I like to have fun in school!
Question: "Can I do my work in pen?"
Mr. Santos: Yes! I don't care what writing utensil you choose, as long as I can read it!
Question: "What city did you live in when you lived in Louisiana?"
Mr. Santos: Great question! I lived in Gonzales, a small town outside of the capitol city of Baton Rouge.
Question: "Will there be extra time to do homework in class? And will we get a lot of homework?"
Mr. Santos: Sometimes we'll have enough time to get started on the homework in class, but most of the time homework is work... for home. We should have about 10-20 minutes of homework a night.
Question: "How old are you... I can't figure out the answer to #1?"
Mr. Santos: Okay here's a hint: ( 144 / 12 x 3 - 10 + 2 )
Question: "How long have you been married?"
Mr. Santos: I have been married to my beautiful wife for 2 years and 8 months! (But I've known my wife since we were 16)
Question: "Have you ever been to another country?"
Mr. Santos: Sadly, I have not. Any suggestions?
Question: "What is your favorite dessert?"
Mr. Santos: My wife makes an awesome apple pie!
Question: "What is your favorite sport?"
Mr. Santos: My favorite sport to watch is NFL Football (Denver Broncos) and my favorite sport to do is running/track.
Question: "Do you like ice cream?"
Mr. Santos: See my previous answer to the question "Do you like pizza?"
Question: "What is your favorite movie and restaurant?"
Mr. Santos: The best movie I've seen recently would be Wreck-it-Ralph and my favorite restaurant is Texican!
Question: "Do you have any allergies?"
Mr. Santos: ... Is this a medical exam? Are you going to put that pointy thing in my ear next?
Question: "Do you like wearing Jordans, Nike, or Adidas?"
Mr. Santos: Sperrys or dress shoes. I keep it classy!
Question: "How long have you been working at Mendez?"
Mr. Santos: This is my third year teaching at Mendez, and my fifth year teaching.
Question: "How tall are you?"
Mr. Santos: I'm going to need a few rulers and some tape to figure this one out...
Question: "Do we ever get to pick where we sit?"
Mr. Santos: As a class reward, we'll have Free Seat Fridays.
Question: "Do you have a Xbox 360?"
Mr. Santos: I own a PS3, Wii, and Nintendo 3DS.
Question: "What is your favorite subject?"
Mr. Santos: When I was in school, US History was my favorite.
Question: "Why did you become a math teacher?"
Mr. Santos: I think math is a lot of fun. I love the feeling of accomplishment you get when you solve a challenging problem, like solving a 1000 piece puzzle!
Question: "How OLD ARE YOU?!"
Mr. Santos: ( 30 - 2 = ? )
Thanks for reading! My wife and I had a lot of fun answering these questions. Hopefully I answered yours and I look forward to spending the school year being your teacher.
Mr. Santos

My oldest daughter Ella had an awesome first day of Kindergarten! She gets to sit at the Pink Table in class… she’s excited about that. She said her favorite thing about school today was music class where they sang silly songs about shoes. I know she’s going to have a great year!

2012 STAAR Tests online
http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/staar/testquestions/
Posted online are questions and answers from the 2012 STAAR Tests, for 3rd grade through High School (EOC Assessments). This is a great way for parents and students to look back at what was on the test they most recently took, go over and the answers, and look ahead to what will be tested at their next grade level. We teachers will be using this resource all year to know what and how content will be tested... parents and students should know this as well!
Another useful site is Project Share Texas. Here they are posting the Math and Science standards for all grade levels. You'll be able to take a glance at what topics will be covered in all grade levels.
