just found your blog and read your post where you mention criticizing cbt and dbt. could you explain a bit what specifically you’re critical of?

I'm critical of the tendency within both of these branches and therapy in general to miss the big picture and end up individualizing suffering by blaming the understandable consequences of real material problems that often contribute to mental health issues of various kinds (abuse, isolation, trauma, poverty, disability, discrimination and much more) on "negative thinking", "cognitive distortions", etc - framing "positive thinking" and other internal policing of thoughts, emotions and reactions as the solution to problems that can't actually be fixed with an attitude change alone.

Of course there are situations where reframing your thinking and questioning your reactions is genuinely helpful, but the tendency to focus on this part as the only necessary solution turns into an assumption that everyone with mental illness are inherently suffering due to irrational reasons and just need to think/react differently to get better, and that's both dangerous and harmful.

There's a general tendency towards individualism in this society which is reflected in how these therapy approaches are often used - we are often expected to fix our individual suffering with willpower, positivity and hard work alone, completely separately from the surrounding circumstances, and then blamed and shamed for "not really trying" when we can't, and that's what I'm really critical of.

hey so i used to work at tumblr but now i work at garbage day. i just re-read the piece in garbage day about the slur song and i figured since i don't work at tumblr anymore nothing is stopping me from messaging you and saying that omg i absolutely love it and thought it was hilarious. i sent it to my team on slack and was like "y'all this is the song of the year" and all of us lost our minds. i also sent it to my "queers united" group chat the universal response was "this is an absolute banger" lol.

10/10 completely unmonitizable and unmarketable and your post about "tumblr staff finding out their site has crowdsourced a viral song only for it to be unusable in corporate marketing" made me, the lead of the marketing team at the time, laugh until i cried. spot on, literally was like "guys this is the biggest thing on tumblr right now, it's fucking amazing, and we cannot touch it with a 10-foot poll." absolutely incredible. stellar work.

Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you don’t know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, it’s actually from Tumblr. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”
