listening to this horror movie review podcast that i only sometimes agree with but their episode on weapons 2025 (very mild spoilers in this post) is really illuminating what is frustrating about a lot of current film and tv 'critics' which is that we have forgotten that films are art... they didn't like that we had a whole section with the cop who sucks and kept asking why he was "necessary" to the story and like to me that's the mark of a shallow storytelling critique because nothing in stories is "necessary"; if you didn't like an element of it you need to ask why it was put there, what do you think the auteur was trying to convey with it, and whether you think it was successful - it doesn't mean this element somehow stumbled its way into the story and writers forgot to blow it away like crumbles - if your critique is that it needs to be eliminated entirely without examining why you think that you might as well say "well it wasn't written how EYE would write it." it drives me bananas. they are also really mad that the director said he "doesn't know" why there's that image of the AK-47 in the dream sequence (which i particularly LOVED), like they are pissed that this is an artistic element that the director chose to put there without any ""reason""" to. like my brothers in christ. this is a piece of artwork not an optimized product. absolute amateurs
