Week 8 - Implementation
Upon watching this week’s recorded lecture video on implementation, I have devised a list of potential challenges my client may face while implementing my recommendations. My biggest takeaway from this week’s lecture is that no organization will perfectly be able to implement the principles of effective social media. What’s important is that as long as you’re constantly making an effort to adapt and evolve, while ensuring your goals, policies, and resources are aligned, is all that matters. The biggest challenge I see my client facing is continuing to manage and monitor his social media activity on his own. My client is extremely smart, but he's in his 70's and social media hasn’t played this big a role in his life/company before. Not saying it won’t change, because he has been putting a lot of effort into learning. Though right now he lacks the knowledge and expertise of mass collaboration and social media in general. He's on a steep learning curve, and he’ll have to intrinsically motivate himself to keep overcoming obstacles. Something that goes hand in hand with my previous foreseen challenge, is that since my client is so focused on learning how to use social media and the technology behind it. He may forget to prioritize achieving his company’s purpose through the collective behaviors that social media and technology make possible. I also feel that since he's still learning and very new to the whole idea of social media, he might lack the confidence to assign/create compelling purposes and content to his social media community. I worry he'll be so absorbed into the idea of just using social media the "right way" and remembering how to do things that he'll forget to come up with engaging and spontaneous content. With that being said, my client was a wonderful person to work with and I look up to them very much. He has worked so incredibly hard to follow my instructions, try new things, and step out of his comfort zone. I have no worries that he won’t be able to get the hang of things and use social media as a tool not a task!

Week 7 - Developing & Sharing Content
There are many dimensions of developing and sharing effective content that result in positive outcomes for a company’s social media presence. Common practices for allocating and distributing content includes understanding your target audience’s needs, strategically thinking about timing, and utilizing paid advertising, promotion, and influencers. Though more specifically, Hootsuite Chapters 3 & 4 talked about the importance of using content to build an engaged and thriving social media community, as well as incorporating diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and accessibility.
Hootsuite modules 3 & 4 stressed the significance of how creating a relevant, interested, and involved community of followers influences engagement, brand loyalty, sales, and a company’s overall success. It’s of the essence to work with your community to humanize your brands social media presence by fostering meaningful two-way relationships with followers. This can be achieved through creating content that encourages your audience to connect with you on deeper level. Examples of this includes striking conversations and asking questions, showcasing your company’s personality through behind the scenes content, live Q&A videos, and responding to and liking comments on both internal and external posts.
A company that does a great job of using content to stimulate a prosperous and flourishing social media community is Duolingo. Duolingo consistently interacts with their audience on multiple platforms. Their mascot, a green owl, is known by almost all active internet users. Duolingo embraces weird and funky content, which resonates with many views because it feels more natural then forced.
Using content to embrace diversity and inclusion is essential in warranting your company to be seen as authentic, and it helps to widen your potential audience. Even more so, integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility is morally and ethically correct, and will help your company succeed in the long run. Incorporating diversity and accessibility into your content creation means representing a wide variety of social and cultural characteristics and identities, guaranteeing the fair treatment of followers by providing everyone with the same opportunities and access, and being mindful of the language and imagery you use.
An example of a company that exemplifies the usage of diversity and accessibility in their content is, Dove's Real Beauty Campaign. Dove's message with this is that beauty is for everyone, by featuring women of different ethnicities, ages, sizes, hair color, and skin types.
Tumblr media
It’s extremely important for a company to integrate social media, community involvement, and diversity into its culture and strategy to enable it to become a social organization. The principles of effective content development and sharing plays a role in an organization becoming a social organization by helping it perceive and understand its vision. Effective content can be used as a roadmap for a company to follow to drive its goals, objectives, and efforts. Content is a way for companies to engage with their audience, show their character and values, and promote two-way communication, which results in them being a social organization.

Week 6 - Online Communities
Chapters 4 & 5 from, The Social Organization, were quite insightful in offering effective principles when using social media to build an online community. I found the overarching theme of the chapters to be about founding your online community with purpose, the focal point being collaboration. Another thing that stuck out to me includes the importance of developing a vision statement directed towards taking ownership of your community, to help you understand when collaboration is appropriate, the goals you wish to achieve, and how you plan on connecting your objectives with your online community.
Upon completion of Hootsuite module 4, I’ve learned many new things regarding the creation, expansion, and maintenance of online communities. One of the biggest takeaways is that developing an online community requires you to humanize your brand, and to not treat your followers as a sales target but as a valued audience. It's no surprise that a well-rounded and prosperous online community can lead to an increase in sales and revenue. Though that will only happen organically, when you foster a two sided, open, engaging, honest, and transparent relationship with your followers. The module teaches us that this can be done though genuinely interacting with your audience, like asking questions, encouraging them to remix content, offering exclusive content, and allowing them to connect with your company and one another on personal levels.
Heres a great read about how Dunkin Donughts uses social media to attract new customers, increase sales, and leverage content!
To be able to stimulate a strong and long-lasting connection with his company’s audience, I've used the concepts from module 4 to help give me direction in supplying my client with recommendations on how to grow his online community. Specifically, I’m focused on teaching my client to be less mechanical and more natural, so he can create meaningful interactions rather than just posting something without intent. I suggested his company post things like behind the scenes content, get to know the crew members, as well polls and quizzes to make his audience feel involved and like they have a say in things. I believe these things will help my client in building powerful and positive relationships with his audience, which in return can lead to higher sales and improved community engagement.

Week 5 - Data Gathering & Surveillance
In the article, The Internet's Original Sin, the author Ethan Zuckerman posed the idea that it’s not too late to build a better web. The article was published in August of 2014, seeing that we still have a vast amount of web related issues like surveillance, data gathering, and algorithms, I wonder if we're now too late. Both Zuckerman’s article, and Maciej Ceglowski's video "The Internet with a Human Face, go into detail on how internet business models heavily influence data gathering and surveillance. It's quite eye opening to think these types of problems have become the normal and were supposed to sit back and accept it.
Internet business models have become centered around personalized and targeted advertising. Social media platforms and search engines rely on collecting and analyzing user data, preferences, behavior, and browsing history. Advertisers thrive on our public and private information to generate revenue and to deliver more customized advertisements. To do so, advertisers need to gather an extensive and extreme amount of our data through surveillance and other tactics. An interesting point that caught my attention during Geglowski's video was when he said advertisers see any human relationship as a sales opportunity. Everything is tracked and stored consistently, when you send something it never goes away, governments, advertisers, and other cloud service providers have access to it forever. The internet was created to be free, open, and accessible to all, the issue with that was businesses needed a way to make money, they achieved this through advertising which fostered intense surveillance and data gathering. Business models are rooted on being able to track and influence people’s decision making. Companies monitor our social media activity for the sole purpose of using it against us to get us to do what they want.
To conclude, nowadays internet business models influence social media and society to use data gathering and surveillance by default. The commodification of personal data by tracking and surveilling poses a menacing warning that our liberty is at risk. These are vastly threatening topics which raise moral and legal concerns. It's of the essence that we regulate and stand against unethical data gathering and surveillance before they continue to infringe on our autonomy and privacy.

Week 4 - Junk News & The Factors Driving its Spread
The rise of fake news, political propaganda, and conspiracy theories is alarming, and they pose a threat to the overall wellbeing of our society. After reading the article Three Reasons Junk News Spreads So Quickly Across Social Media, I have formed certain views on each of the contributing reasons, including algorithms, advertising, and exposure. They are as follows...
Algorithms: The curation of content on various social media platforms is not the result of conscious human choices. Algorithms are the source of what comes and goes on our screens, as they have been coded to prioritize, filter, and limit specific information. Algorithms are used to manipulate our attention, by personalizing the substance we view online, whether it reflects our interests, geographic locations, or the things we engage in. The issue with algorithms spreading false content is how quickly it can happen and how repetitive it becomes. The article explained that as soon as you like, comment, or repost something online, algorithms immediately get to work curating tailored content. In which creates "filter bubbles" that limit the flow of nonbiased information. Individuals and businesses need to become more aware of how the interactions on social media shape the specific content they see. To help combat the spread of fake news through algorithm biases, people should seek diverse and reliable sources, fact check, and attempt to be more mindful when scrolling through social media.
Advertising: Last week, after watching the documentary, The Social Dilemma, and Max Stossel's video, Am I using Technology or is it Using Me, I learned that when social media platforms are free our information becomes the product. The article this week further confirmed that thought by indicating we pay for services with our personal information, and advertisers are the buyers. Advertisers are tasked with the job of engaging users with attractive, interesting, and stimulating information, regardless of if it’s true or not. They play a large role in escalating the reach of junk news and political propaganda. The power advertisers have in their ability to target certain individuals with misleading, manipulative, and false information is extremely threatening. You can respond to issues like this by enabling ad blockers and declining websites to "allow cookies". I had to do a case analysis about false advertising on Kellogg’s rice crispy scandal, where they told consumers their cereal had immunity-boosting properties. It ended up being completely false, so they went to court and lost, then they had to pay millions.
Tumblr media
Exposure: Individuals play a major role in the spread of junk news. Whether its interacting with, sharing, or choosing not to ignore, people need to carefully "exercise their information preferences". A big issue with this is the confirmation bias, which is the tendency to seek out information that fuels/confirms our own preexisting views, which contributes to the spread of false narratives. I'm guilty of this, I typically only view certain news stations, radios, and websites because they align with my personal beliefs. It's are job to expose ourselves to a diverse assortment of information, perspectives, and media outlets to ensure were getting a variety of different content. Businesses can respond to this by encouraging digital literacy and providing the resources to do so.
To conclude, individuals must be both diligent and vigilant when it comes to viewing online information. You must question, analyze, and fact check the content you see before concluding its true accuracy. Effective critical thinking is vital in ensuring the content you see online is true or false.

Week 4 - Social Media Consulting
Becoming a successful social media consult requires a multitude of characteristics, skills, and underlying principles to be able to navigate the ever so changing and high-powered realm of digital media. The most important qualities I believe social media consultants should acquire includes time management, curiosity and creativity, technological expertise, problem solving, and customer service. It's essential for social media consults to be able to come up with new ideas and strategies in a professional and timely matter. They’re required to think on their feet and to develop innovative and engaging content that stands out from competitors. In our lecture video Professor Melton said that there is never a "one size fits all solution", therefore, its up to social media consults to problem solve by executing a strategy that is aligned with the organization or client. The qualities that make up a good social media consult are endless, but I find that the ones stated above contribute to the overall prosperity in consultants helping businesses foster a solid and effective virtual identity.
Tumblr media
If I were acting as my own social media consultant, I would advise myself to increase my online presence by networking, engaging, and interacting with people. I have various social media accounts; I just haven’t posted or used them in years. My Instagram has zero posts, I haven’t been active on Facebook since 2019, and I only use my professional accounts to connect with potential employers. So, I’d say the best strategy for improving my social media presence is to actually use social media platforms. I can’t have an online presence or build productive relationships if I don’t post anything. In the future, I’d like to grow and evolve my own personal brand by consistently communicating who I am and what I stand for by simply being active and posting captivating content.

Week 3 - Big Data & Algorithms
Big data can be defined as the storage and analysis of both large and complex data. Algorithms are sequences of rules or instructions that must be followed and performed to solve problems and conduct operations. The immense power of big data and algorithms lies within their ability to process, analyze, and extract important and valuable information from massive amounts of elaborate datasets. Big data and algorithms are extremely efficient, predictive, and innovative. They can process vast amounts of personalized information, which can be used to target consumers and organizations. Big data and algorithms allow decision makers to rapidly make informed conclusions for effective strategic planning and campaigns.
With great power comes great responsibility, and unfortunately, I feel as if that’s where big corporations and the tech industry falls short. The issues surrounding big data and algorithms are colossal, they place a threat not only to individual well-being but for society as a whole. It exploits vulnerability, manipulates us, erodes democracy, and allows us to isolate ourselves from the real world. Big data is permanent, and beyond our control, which is the perfect mix to exacerbate the ethical, legal, and social impacts. Dangers of big data and algorithms include privacy concerns, like unwarranted surveillance and unauthorized access to private information. Another major risk is the loss of control, which enables things like fake news, dysmorphia, and discrimination biases.
My biggest take away from this week’s lecture and the documentary is that when things are free, like many social media platforms are, we become the product. Advertisers are the consumers and the byproduct being sold is our personal information. My views about how big data and algorithm problems can be dealt with involve further educating ourselves about data privacy and properly understanding how to exercise our rights when it comes to controlling the spread of our data. On a professional level, I believe its important that organizations implement ethical and clear data procedures, and routinely examine their current data collection processes. On a societal level, it’s crucial that legislative agencies establish transparent rules and policies. New data privacy laws can help improve public awareness and accountability.
In closing, big data and algorithms are very powerful tools that can be used for good or bad. Its up to the companies themselves to properly use them, and up to consumers to not let their data be exploited. It’s essential to find a balance between utilizing the power of these technological tools whilst also mitigating the risks.

Week 2 - Digital Detox (Social Media Experiment)
For this week’s assignment, we were challenged to alter our typical social media habits. After completing my technology usage log, I found that my biggest issues with screen time were after finishing homework and before going to bed. For the purpose of this experiment, I've set two specific rules to help me in breaking these habits, and to introduce new ways of stimulating my brain. The first rule was to not use any form of technology after doing homework for at least 1-2 hours, depending on how long I used my laptop for assignments, notes, etc. The second rule was to put my phone up an hour and a half before bedtime, and to not check it right before I went to sleep.
Instead of resorting to my usual norm of spending an hour on Tik Tok after doing homework, I played a game of solitaire, deep cleaned, and meal prepped. In the past, I believed that scrolling on my phone was a way to "brain drain" after working on various assignments. Though, I realized that it actually does the opposite and makes me feel less productive. I discovered that using technology after already using technology makes me feel lazy and sluggish. It was difficult at first, because all I wanted to do was move from my desk to my bed so I could rot and watch videos. But, I was able to accomplish so many things then I normally would have, and I didn’t feel pressed for time. Playing solitaire genuinely allowed me to clear my head and reset myself in a sense. Taking the time to clean for a short period enabled me to not spend hours on Sunday cleaning.
I've always heard people say that putting your phone up an hour before bed helps you sleep better, but I never thought it would have as big as an impact as it did. Around 7:30pm I set my phone on the charger screen down, and I started to re-read one of my favorite books. After that, I journaled and did my nails with my roommate. As silly and girly as it sounds, I have never fallen asleep quicker, apart from taking sleeping pills of course. It felt weird, because for so long I've trained my brain to think that watching Tik Toks is how I’m supposed to fall asleep. Though I felt so relaxed and at peace that it barely took me 10 minutes before I was passed out sleeping soundly. The best thing was that I woke up energetic and ready to take on the day.
In closing, I was quite surprised to see how out of touch I was with these simple mundane habits. I learned that I need to take more accountability and put forth increased effort towards the small things. If I want to be more productive and involved with myself, I need to continue following these rules.

Week 2 - Social Media & Social Relationships
The internet is a very interesting place... I find myself conflicted when it comes to thinking about the internet and all the different platforms and technologies it encompasses. I love the fact that the whole world is within my fingertips. A simple search on Google allows me to find anything and everything. I love being connected with family and friends through text messages and facetime. I love the capability the internet gives me to stay up to date with political affairs and world news. Furthermore, I love being able to look up symptoms on the internet to see if WebMD thinks I’m sick. Nevertheless, I sometimes hate the internet.
I have "older" parents then most young adults my age. My dad is in his 70s and my mom is in her late 60s. They were both born in time where the internet wasn’t yet invented. Therefore, I've grown up living and learning their values, which in most cases was anti-internet. Up until my senior year of high school my mom wouldn’t let us order anything online because she didn’t want our card information being stolen. Both my parents had flip phones, and we used our land line for communicating with others. Neither of my parents use any form of social media, and the words Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are completely foreign to them. I've spent hours trying to explain to them how to use my Netflix account. Whenever I show either of them a TikTok, their first response is "Do you know this person, how can you see this" and then "What station is this on". Despite that, they are the most hardworking, intelligent, and engaged people. They may not know a single thing about technology, but they instilled upon me the most desirable traits that kids nowadays don't have. I grew up without being dependent on the internet, I'm more socially aware, and I know how to act in certain situations without relying on technology.
My issues with the internet couldn’t be more aligned with the topics discussed in the video, We've Been Sneaking into Your Brains, by Max Stossel. Stossel talked about slot machines and variable rewards which connects to us and our phones. That being we have an infinite appetite for distraction and a subconscious need for instant gratification. Technology is designed to be addicting and distracting, which makes it incredibly easy to run away from ourselves and forget what really makes us who we are. The worst part about the internet and social media in my opinion is the influence to conform and compare myself to others. I know that not everything on the internet is real, and that things can be edited and morphed to appear perfect. But, it still puts pressure on me to want to be like or look like other people I see online.
I really enjoyed reading the article "Before the Internet", by Emma Rathbone. I found the overarching theme to be that before the internet we knew how to create our own fun. I resonated with the idea that the internet is a tether, holding us back from being our true selves. I laughed at the part where she said before the internet, we had to ask things like "is there a booklet on this shit". Now, we say things like "just ask Google, it knows everything".
All in all, the internet is a great thing, it provides us with information, means for communicating, and access to things we couldn’t once have. Though, we must remember to ask ourselves "Am I using technology, or is it using me"? We need to draw a line between the internet and the real world. I think it’s critical we learn to accept and know ourselves without basing everything off the internet. We need to set boundaries, engage ourselves into the real world, and protect our priorities.

Introduction - Get to know me!
Hi everyone, my name is Savannah Beachy and I'm a senior at Central Michigan University studying business administration and management. I have a passion for communicating and helping others achieve success in both their work and personal endeavors. I strive to consistently expand my professional knowledge and abilities through trying new things and experimenting. I enjoy improving organizational processes and human resource capabilities. I plan to one day work for a private consulting firm to aide companies in formulating strategic plans and assisting with employee recruitment, training, and management. Apart from work and school related activities, I enjoy reading, baking, and walking my dog!
As someone who strays from using social media in their personal life, I'm excited this class will help me in becoming more comfortable with having an online presence. As well as, deepening my understanding of how social media and technology can be used to help companies attain a competitive advantage and stand out from competitors. Our society has placed an extreme value on social media, therefore, its essential I learn how to effectively use different forms of digital literacy and technology. My BIS:315 blog is focused on engaging, collaborating, and networking with other students. Whilst also providing others with my own opinions and narratives, in hopes to give someone a new perspective. My blog will be centered on the basic principles of finding success in social media and how it can be used in the business realm.
An organization I believe is an exemplary example of successful social media usage is Scrub Daddy. Scrub Daddy has gained immense attention for its humorous, entertaining, and unconventional presence on various platforms. The company is active on Tik Tok, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, etc. Their frequent and out of pocket posts have trended for weeks, attributing to its recent spike in sales. Scrub Daddy creates its own content including pictures, videos, memes, and much more. I find Scrub Daddy to be a good example because their use of content creation has allowed them to tap into a new audience and engage a younger demographic. I would have never purchased one of their products if I hadn’t spent an hour giggling at their Tik Toks comments.
