“In the evacuation camps, I taught “hangman" once to help a few girls practice English vocab and days later, walked into their "dorm" to find they were using it to study with other students. Went to boys dorm and they were playing it on their chalkboard too! It's a game whose morbidity most Americans are desensitized to, including myself. I almost regretted using it. But at the same time, dark but relevant content and humor in their learning system is common. This game made sense to them. 🔺As much as they hate English vocab, they don't wanna see yet another person die an unjust death!🔺#stopLumadkillings”

“My ancestral land. Please help stop the mining!” Drawn by a Lumad student in evacuation camp in 2016 during one of my workshops. Look at carefully drawn cultivated farm land— the most integral classroom for the Lumad schools. Sustainable agriculture is the livelihood, passion, and pride of this Manobo tribe .
