Across Old Bark
My fic which was written for the @outerwilds-events Reverse Minibang! I worked with @gardeninaquarium who drew a beautiful piece which I wrote my fic based off of! (It does contain very light spoilers and hints towards spoilers so beware!)
Esker stoked the fire and looked amongst the stars to pass time as the planets orbited the distant sun. They took a moment to consider whether or not to launch their scout at Timber Hearth (Ultimately deciding not to) when they saw something odd. A ship launching from Timber Hearth, heading towards Attlerock. This came as a surprise to Esker for many reasons. First off, nobody even mentioned to Esker that Hatchling would be launching today, and second, when most people launch their first thought is hardly ever âHey, whatâs going on at Attlerock?â
Esker, wanting to take advantage of this golden opportunity, rushed to grab a can of mallows (Making sure to AVOID the obviously bloated can they just keep forgetting to throw out) and readied a few sticks. Once everything was set up they rushed back to their rocking chair, just as the ship landed. Hatchling saw Esker and, in what looked like a mix of excitement and possibly a hint of anxiety, rushed over to Them.Â
âOh hey! Itâs you, Hatchling! Didnât know you were gonna be launching today, let alone that youâd be coming on over here!â Esker happily stammered âSpeaking of, what brings you over here?â Hatchling thought for a moment, before eventually replying âOh I just wanted to come spend some time with you before I go off and do someâŠâ They paused for a moment âSomething Iâve been meaning to get to, I suppose.â Hatchling twiddled their thumbs and looked off a bit, fidgeting with their equipment.Â
âHey!â Esker piped up âIâve got a can oâ mallows and some sticks here, so what say you nâ me roast some while we chat?â Esker partially brought this up because they could really use the company, however, Hatchling seemed like they could use a good distraction as well.
âThat sounds lovely, Esker!â Hatchling replied. Esker handed Hatchling a stick, along with a mallow, as Hatchling began to take a seat. Hatchling hovered their mallow gently above the flame, close enough that itâd get toasty, but just far enough so that it wouldnât burn. âSo, howâd everything down on Timber Hearth go?â Esker asked. âWith the launch, I mean. I can assume it went well since I can see ya with my own four eyes, but there ainât no chance I wanna miss out on a story worth tellinâ!â The mallows started to turn a slightly darker color as they were slowly cooked above the flames.Â
âOh well, let me seeâŠâ Hatchling thought back to their launch. Their first launch. âThe campout under the stars was nice, that sleeping bagâs so nice I feel like I could sleep in it a thousand times before. Everyone wanted to see me off, and it was nice to take one last look at things before I left it all behind.â Hatchling looked back towards Timber Hearth. âOh! When I first tried to leave orbit I undershot it and ended up hurtling back onto the ground! I really didnât expect to have to fix my ship that soon, but I guess Iâd rather have to fix it with gravity than without, right?â Hatchling let out a chuckle.
The mallows were turning a light gold, the smell of them and the campfire filled the air. Esker laughed along with Hatchling. âOh thatâs a good one! Happens to all of us at least once. Yâknow, Iâve gotten a pretty good grasp on how the planetâs gravity warps stuff on account of me launchinâ my lilâ scout a whole lot, but back in the day I was pretty bad at making sure I was outta orbit.â Esker continued to babble on while they reminisced. The mallows over the fire turning a golden brown as Esker blew on theirs. Hatchlingâs eyes glanced from the crackling fire towards the sun.
âYâknow, Hatchling, youâre a real hoot, you know that? We âotta talk again more after you finish whatever it is you said you gotta go off and do after this, alright?â Hatchlingâs grip on the stick lessened as their mallow began to drift into the flames. It began to darken, getting black, before scorching and setting ablaze.Â
âHey, Hatchling!â Esker said, getting up from their seat and heading over to Hatchling to help put out the burning mallow.Â
âYou really donât have to come back here if you donât wanna! Itâs just that I get a bit lonely and it seemed you enjoyed my company, so I thought you might wanna join me back over here sometime. But itâs alright, I completely understand if ya wouldnât-â Hatchling wrapped their arms around Esker tightly.
âI would! I really would wanna do this again sometime! Iâve loved spending time with you, Esker.â Tears began to form in the corners of their eyes but they tried not to cry. âI wish I could do this again with you, I really do. IâmâŠâ Hatchling began to sob. âIâm going to miss you so much when I leave Esker. I donât wanna have to say goodbye yet.â Esker embraced Hatchling back.Â
âLook, Hatchling, Iâm really not sure what youâre talking about, weâve got as much time as youâd like us to have, ya just got here. Now whether thatâs a minute, or till we ainât got no mallows to roast and weâre just rattling off about nothingâs up to you. Not like Iâve got much better to do anyhow. So how about we clean all this up and we can figure stuff out from there. That sound good?â Hatchling smiled, nodding at Esker.Â
âIâm just not really sure if weâll have time to do this again once I leave.â Hatchling sniffed.Â
âI promise, on the very stars above, that weâll find a time and a place we can do this again. Weâll sit under the stars, you, me, and everyone else, and weâll roast some mallows.â Esker reassured them. âYou really think so?â Hatchling asked. âOf course I do! I wouldnât promise you if I didnât think itâd happen! Now how about we get you a mallow that you donât burn, huh goofball? Maybe I should teach you how to actually roast emâ too!â Esker teased Hatchling. âThatâd be great Esker.â They replied, still a little sniffly from crying. And for a moment, it felt like the stars stood still.
