Mark Rosewater's "shortlist" for MTG
so, MaRo, lead designer of Magic the Gathering, has used his blog to mention worlds that Magic is extremely likely to go to. I’d like to use this post as a repository for all the planes that we know are on the shortlist. Feel free to reblog and add to it.
Return to Theros
Return to Dominaria
An underground world
A prison world, seemingly where the criminals of the multiverse would be put
A steampunk world
A Land of the Lost, prehistoric world (probably Muraganda)
A wild west plane
A pirate world
A plane based on Egyptian mythology
A medieval plane, classic Arthurian fantasy

the Jeskai Wins matchup is actually really good with all of the sheep! The life gain is not irrelevant, and there are plenty of anti-rabble spells in the main deck.

Game Day Khans!
Hey everyone! It's been a while since I've posted anything on here, but I've been playing some Khans of Tarkir and it's probably my favorite draft format so far. However, there's an event this weekend: Game Day! I had been playing Naya for standard for a few weeks, but it just didn't feel good against...well, anything. So I resolved to make something more exciting, and somehow I ended up in Jeskai colors. However, it wasn't a tempo deck or a dumb combo deck... It's control time. Let's look at the list!
Creatures (5) 4 Nyx-Fleece Ram 1 Keranos, God of Storms Spells (29) 2 Disdainful Stroke 2 Last Breath 2 Magma Jet 3 Anger of the Gods 3 Banishing Light 3 Divination 4 Dissolve 1 Chandra, Pyromaster 2 AEtherspouts 2 End Hostilities 3 Elspeth, Sun's Champion 2 Dig Through Time Lands (26) 2 Mystic Monastery 3 Island 3 Temple of Enlightenment 3 Temple of Epiphany 3 Temple of Triumph 4 Flooded Strand 4 Mountain 4 Plains Sideboard (15) 2 Swan Song 2 Disdainful Stroke 2 Eidolon of Rhetoric 3 Hushwing Gryff 1 End Hostilities
3 Stormbreath Dragon
1 Deicide
1 Gainsay
Now, I'm gonna say it up front: If you don't keep a bad hand, this deck feels like it has a 75% chance to just rip game one away from any of the tempo builds you'll see. The post-board matchups are harder, but stormbreath dragon and the mainboard hate you have should push you through. I'm still working out the sideboard options here, but I feel like they're very good.
Against abzan: You have the ability to grind just as hard as they do. Dig Through Time is one of the best spells I've ever played, and it's just so damn fun to resolve every single time you cast it. Elspeth can often get you out of tough situations, and Disdainful Stroke is insane.
Against aggro: With 4 mainboard sheep and 3 anger of the gods, you should have no problem against aggro decks. Nyx-Fleece Ram is just the best. Once you start gaining life every turn and efficiently blocking, you'll understand. If things get too out of hand, Aetherspouts and End Hostilities are both fantastic cards. Aetherspouts especially feels like a knockout blow.
Overall, I really hated the UB deck after watching Pro Tour Khans and I wanted to play some different kind of control, and this is where I ended up. Feel free to leave suggestions for anything I might have missed! Have a great day. :)

WMCQ (Standard) - Saturday August 16
Good morning everyone! I wanted to write up a mini tournament report about the WMCQ in Oakland, CA this past weekend. I only live an hour away (and my buddy wanted to buy the geist from me) so I decided to attend with my R(b) Devotion list, which I talked about here! The only difference between that list and the one I decided to go with was the sideboard, which ended up looking like this:
1 Pithing Needle
3 Duress
2 Magma Spray
3 Anger of the Gods
2 Harness By Force
2 Chandra, Pyromaster
2 Slaughter Games
Round by round mini write-up will be under the cut!
Round 1, BW Lifegain
This caught me a bit off guard. It was a BW Humans variant that played Vizkopa Guildmage and Path of Bravery. The first game he was able to just jump the gun on me since he was on the play, and I didn't get to recover, especially after he put down Soul of Theros. I sided in Anger of the Gods and Slaughter Games. Game 2 I wiped his board after he cast Stain the Mind naming Stormbreath Dragon, but I had the aggro hand with Purphoros and Fanatic of Mogis putting in all the work. Game 3 he stumbled on 3 lands on the play and i landed a stormbreath dragon before he conceded. 1-0
Round 2, Mono Blue Aggro
For the record, I hate this matchup. Things like Frostburn Weird and Tidebinder Mage really slow me down, and I HAVE to draw ultimate price to deal with a resolved Master of Waves. However, my opponent stumbled on a single island and a mutavault. His turn 1 was a Judge's Familiar, so I knew what he was on, and I had kept a 3 Burning-Tree Emissary hand. He didn't play another creature and I drew BTE #4 on my second draw step. Game 2, he mulled to 4 and I had another great hand. 2-0
Round 3, 5-Color Slivers (???)
This round was very odd. I imagine my opponent had byes or his opponents had very awkward first rounds, because this deck's mana base ended up hurting him more than he put creatures on the table. I sided in Anger of the gods and was done with the match in 8 minutes. 3-0
Round 4, Jund Planeswalkers
I'll be honest, I didn't watch much of the pro tour, but my friends told me that I probably shouldn't be super worried about this matchup. And I wasn't, until I didn't draw anything! 2 games of mulligans and poor draws put me at 3-1.
Round 5, Mono-Black Devotion
This round was also bad. Both of us got stuck on 2 lands in game 1 before he found the 3rd land for his underworld connections, leading to him grinding me down. Game 2 we both flooded out, but I managed to land a frostburn weird and he never found a blocker. Game three, I stumbled on lands after mulligans. 3-2
Round 6, GU Monsters
I'm gonna preface this by saying that Prophet of Kruphix is SUPER REAL if you can't remove it immediately. He boarded in a Bow of Nylea and was able to kill my Stormbreath Dragons with it using a Kiora's Follower, making for some very awkward situations. I managed to win round 2 after casting Anger of the Gods, and using the 2 triggers on my reckoners to deal additional damage to a non-monstroused polukranos and a courser. Game 3 I won with a Fanatic of Mogis off of the top, proving once again that if you can managed to do 12 damage with one card, you can probably just win the game! 4-2
Round 7, Rabble Red
This is by far the easiest match I had all day. Ash Zealot and Boros Reckoner just block so profitably against rabble red, especially if your opponent can't find a lightning strike, or gets caught on mana before they can cast a stoke the flames. I played an Ash Zealot turn 2 and didn't swing and my opponent just had no idea what to do. 5-2.
Round 8, RW Burn
Easily my worst matchup, due to the high concentration of x/2's I use for devotion. I tried to slow roll them and not get caught by searing blood, but after boarding and not seeing and of the duress i added, I wasn't able to pull this one out. 5-3
Round 9, BW Midrange
I saw a bit of this deck after the pro tour because one of my friends decided to throw it together, and I have a fairly decent matchup with it. Having stormbreath dragon and Fanatic of Mogis means that you don't have to be too scared of cards like Blood Baron and Obzedat, though the Obzedat will kill you if you aren't able to punch your opponent fast enough. After the boarded games I put in both slaughter games and the pithing needle. I had the needle naming elspeth, drew a duress, saw that my opponent had 2 in hand and took away some removal instead. My opponent played a banishing light on the needle but was stuck on 5 lands; I ripped Slaughter Games off the top to take both of his Elspeths away and was able to swing back in with 2 stormbreath dragons for the win. 6-3
X-3 is able to cash out, but unfortunately my round 10 opponent was mono-green devotion, which is a faster devotion build with bigger dudes. He won the initial roll, got game 1, then I got game 2, and he ended up making 40+ mana on his turn 5 in game 3 to finish me off.
Overall I really like where the deck ended up, and I lost a couple games to poor draws. I'm gonna keep playing it until rotation, but there are only FNM standard events left for the rest of the season in my area. It's a very fun deck, and if you're looking for soething silly to play, or if you like the idea of slamming a person for 12+ on turn 5, it'll definitely be up your alley. I'll post my report of Sunday's PTQ some time this week too, so keep an eye out!

CA TCG States!
I'll be playing in tomorrow's TCGplayer States event down at CFB tomorrow. It's a modern event, and I'll be piloting Scapeshift! (Surprise!) Here's the list I'm working with, which is now testing a 1-of Keranos.
1 Breeding Pool 1 Cascade Bluffs 3 Cryptic Command 2 Electrolyze 1 Flooded Grove 3 Forest 1 Halimar Depths 3 Island 2 Izzet Charm 2 Misty Rainforest 2 Mountain 4 Remand 2 Repeal 4 Sakura-Tribe Elder 4 Scapeshift 4 Search for Tomorrow 4 Serum Visions 3 Snapcaster Mage 4 Steam Vents 4 Stomping Ground 3 Telling Time 2 Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
1 Keranos, God of Storms
Sideboard: 2 Ancient Grudge 2 Anger of the Gods 1 Batterskull 1 Engineered Explosives 2 Obstinate Baloth 2 Relic of Progenitus 1 Spellskite 2 Swan Song 2 Vendilion Clique
There are games where you can suspend Search for Tomorrow on turn 1, Sakura Tribe Elder on turn 2, and then cast Keranos on turn 3. Those games are very hard to lose. I'm also hoping to place in the top 8 again at the very least, if not higher than that. Is anyone else playing some modern this weekend?
