I find it a little funny when it is suggested that the dominant personality in Bruce/Selina’s relationship is Bruce. It’s easy to be deceived by this notion I think, because of course Bruce has to be the dominant link in the relationship, I mean he’s Batman, he’s in control, he always has to be in control. Many pieces of art focus on that I think by portraying Bruce with the mask and Selina without the mask, but I think that actually puts things the other way around: Bruce keeps the mask because he’s scared. He uses the mask to both protect himself and those he loves from reprisals, from being hurt, from experiencing loss once more. He may exert physical control simply by virtue of being bigger and stronger than Selina, but she’s always seemed far more experienced than Bruce at love, in my eyes. She’s not afraid of him, and she’s certainly not afraid of showing him her face. She knows she can share herself, and quite possibly be hurt because of who she is and who he is and all the crazy bullshit that implies, but she knows she can take it, she knows the risk is worth it, and more importantly, she knows the emotionally herculean task that is to get past Bruce’s miles and miles of walls, and she throws herself at it, anyway. Don’t get me wrong, I think both are very strong and capable individuals, but in this particular case I think Selina’s the stronger link. But that’s just me and I think too much about this shit and I should be sleeping right now.

Headcanon: Selina has heard Bruce vent about his kids many, many, MANY times. She can even tell who he’s talking about by the first sentence, as detailed below:

When his back is turned, she’ll mouth the rant and sometimes mimic his body language. One time he caught her dramatically shaking her fist and so she just fist-bumped him.

His touch cannot do much. Though he’s not content with the news, maybe he could try and take a little of the weight off of her. For a passing moment, he wonders how it must feel for her, to know that she’d soon have another growing in her stomach. Despite having a child of his own, he was never present for any of this part. Damian was after all, a well kept secret for a longer time than he’d like to admit. Even then, the pregnancy hadn’t been normal. ‘I’m sure’, it garners a sigh. “Okay.”

What else was he meant to say?

Settled there, panic has truly set in. He wonders if this is his fate, karma’s way of getting him back for his recent doings. He and Selina had barely got to a good point in their relationship, if it could be called that, and already a baby was a possibility. He hadn’t meant for it come across the way it most likely did. But even now, the scars from his tumultuous time with Talia have yet to fade. 

“I know. This isn’t a comparison.”

Whatever exists between them is, in that moment, a contradiction. A live wire of emotions and uncertainty and depth, a barren wasteland of flat conversation. Selina didn’t know what to make of it. There had been plenty of times that she and Bruce had been... difficult. That things hadn’t gone the way they expected, or ended in something explosive. They had never been conventional, but they had also never been... this. 

She pulled back, eyes drifting around the Batcave, settled to lean back against part of the desk. Near him, but not with him. Maybe space was the best option. She swallowed hard, tried to keep her mind from spinning. This wouldn’t be Helena. Even if... even if it were a girl, she wouldn’t be the same. It wouldn’t be easy, either. Not with the Registration Act and all the tension that surrounded their business. It was a poorly-timed pregnancy, a poorly timed misadventure. Nausea settled in like wet cement. 

“What do we do?”
