Preparing for the 4-D Printing Revolution
just as the world is beginning to grasp the implications of the 3-D revolution, researchers are proposing an upgrade. Their work suggests that the true promise of digital fabrication lies with a fourth dimension — in printing objects programmed to change over time. Whereas 3-D objects are static and require human control, 4-D objects can react to their environment autonomously, assembling, repairing, or transforming themselves. Advances in this realm will rely less on printing technology than on materials themselves. At MIT, the architect Skylar Tibbitscombined a 3-D printer with a novel combination of materials to create a wirelike object that when dropped in water changed its shape to form the letters “MIT.” It was the pairing of a water-absorbing polymer material with a basic plastic that made the effect possible.

A fresh perspective — Russian photographer Andrew Bodrov captured several rocket launches as 360-degree panoramas in Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. They are part of his “little planet” panorama series which you can see here (I discovered panoramas of my hometown Tallinn there, what are the odds?!). They’re also available in interactive versions.

Be very excited. On October 19th something ridiculous is going to happen. A rare comet from the Oort Cloud at the edge of our solar system is going to fly past NASA’s MAVEN robot as it orbits around Mars.  It’ll be so close that they’re going to postpone work on Mars and study the comet for five days.
This will be the closest a comet’s ever gotten to Mars in human history and it’s coming from so far away that it’s likely going to have a lot of material we otherwise couldn’t find in the solar system very easily.
The chances of this happening are far less than one in a million.

22-year-old Fatu Kekula nursed her entire family through Ebola. Her father. Her mother. Her sister. Her cousin. Fatu took care of them all, single-handedly feeding them, cleaning them and giving them medications.
And she did so with remarkable success. Three out of her four patients survived. That’s a 25% death rate — considerably better than the estimated Ebola death rate of 70%.
Fatu stayed healthy, which is noteworthy considering that more than 300 health care workers have become infected with Ebola, and she didn’t even have personal protection equipment — those white space suits and goggles used in Ebola treatment units.
Instead Fatu, who’s in her final year of nursing school, invented her own equipment. International aid workers heard about Fatu’s “trash bag method” and are now teaching it to other West Africans who can’t get into hospitals and don’t have protective gear of their own
DUDE. SHE MANAGED TO GET A FUCKING 75% SURVIVAL RATE OUT OF A DISEASE WITH A 70% DEATH RATE.

Can you explain more about why you're against spanking? I agree, I'd just like to hear what you have to say.
it is hurting someone
your child, specifically, who should not be hurt by you of all people
it doesnt work in the long term
it develops trust issues
it is reliant on fear, and teaches them to be afraid instead of actually learning what they did and how to self-discipline (i.e., “mommy spanked me when i tried crossing the road by myself, so i shouldn’t do it in front of her so i don’t get spanked” instead of “mommy told me i could get hurt if i cross the road by myself, so i won’t do it”)
it asserts the ideology of stronger = right, and that because someone hurts you they are correct
it shows that violence solves issues, which causes your child not only to normalize violence, but to partake in it
it disregards bodily autonomy (as in people not touching you without your consent)
it hurts their self-esteem, as well as affects their mental health, and their intelligence
it becomes a gateway to harsher abuse due to desensitization
it creates detachment of the parent/child bond
it normalizes degrading and harmful behavior on the parent’s end
it continues on the cycle of abuse
it’s just overall shitty don’t hit someone, especially not someone who is smaller than you, defenseless, and VERY easily affected by it ok just don’t

“Cosmos” is a Greek word for the order of the universe. It is, in a way, the opposite of “Chaos.” It implies the deep interconnectedness of all things. It conveys awe for the intricate and subtle way in which the universe is put together.” — Carl Sagan

A comprehensive overview of chemical-free consumer products
"Manufacturers of consumer products, in particular edibles and cosmetics, have broadly employed the term ‘Chemical free’ in marketing campaigns and on product labels. Such characterization is often incorrectly used to imply — and interpreted to mean — that the product in question is healthy, derived from natural sources, or otherwise free from synthetic components. We have examined and subjected to rudimentary analysis an exhaustive number of such products, including but not limited to lotions and cosmetics, herbal supplements, household cleaners, food items, and beverages. Herein are described all those consumer products, to our knowledge, that are appropriately labelled as ‘Chemical free’."
