Hope is not illogical.
He won't tell you that, of course. As he walks, his sweeping coat is like a kings cape swathed around a child too tall and too thin to be traipsing in the garment of expectations carefully woven for him by those who have never cared to know him. But is it that anymore? Perhaps it is a veil of grief, waiting to be lifted from his shoulders by the only person who matters. Even still, it may be his protection--turn the collar up and force the world to view him as an anomaly, as a mystery they could never wrap their minds around to solve. All but one.
He will be home soon, and hope...hope is not illogical. Perhaps John will not hate him, after all is said and done. Sherlock knows the breadth and depth of what he has done to his friend, and he knows, he has learned that evils can be done by well intentioned men. In doing good, Sherlock has made much chaos, and in attempting reparation, he will do more.
For now, he stops in front of Angelo's, closed and dark, and gazes at the window seat. There is nothing he wants more than to sit with John, here, and tell him everything he could not say while he was gone. And perhaps he will. Perhaps he will. There is a chance.
He hopes.

Has John ever had a girlfriend you haven't scared off?
John’s infatuation with my person and lifestyle has damaged just as many of his previous relationships as my personality has.

I HAVEN'T HEARD FROM JOHN IN A WHILE, stop hogging him! how is he?
He’s fine. Been largely preoccupied with a number of cases that needed our attention. Hit a lull now, so he’s been resting up.

Note
Dear Sherlock, do you feel that the fact that you don't have to work to learn things about John makes your relationship weaker than it could be?
It is my understanding that whether or not a relationship is successful depends on the willingness of both parties to compromise and consider one another’s “feelings," however tedious that may be. Regardless, there are many things that are not completely deducible, and John has been very forthcoming with those details. It seems to me that the strength of an interpersonal relationship relies more upon trust than method.
