The girl touched the collar at her neck, the fetter at her wrist. So many men had tried to make her a queen. Now she understood that she was meant for something more.

And the book is Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza:
Tumblr media
“The only surviving heir to an ancient Kalusian dynasty, Rheehas spent her life training to destroy the people who killed her family. Now, on the eve of her coronation, the time has finally come for Rhee to claim her throne - and her revenge. Alyosha is a Wraetan who has risen above his war refugee origins to find fame as the dashing star of a DroneVision show. Despite his popularity, Aly struggles with anti-Wraetan prejudices and the pressure of being perfect in the public eye. Their paths collide with one brutal act of violence: Rhee is attacked, barely escaping with her life. Aly is blamed for her presumed murder. The princess and her accused killer are forced to go into hiding - even as a war between planets is waged in Rhee's name. But soon, Rhee and Aly discover that the assassination attempt is just one part of a sinister plot. Bound together by an evil that only they can stop, the two fugitives must join forces to save the galaxy.” (Description from Goodreads)

New Book Tuesdays - October 23
Welcome back to New Book Tuesdays, where we find and recommend a new book coming out this week!
This week’s book is Imagine Us Happy by Jennifer Yu:
Tumblr media
“Stella lives with depression, and her goals for junior year are pretty much limited to surviving her classes, staying out of her parents’ constant fights and staving off unwanted feelings enough to hang out with her friends Lin and Katie. Until Kevin. A quiet, wry senior who understands Stella and the lows she’s going through like no one else. With him, she feels less lonely, listened to—and hopeful for the first time since ever… But to keep that feeling, Stella lets her grades go and her friendships slide. And soon she sees just how deep Kevin’s own scars go. Now little arguments are shattering. Major fights are catastrophic. And trying to hold it all together is exhausting Stella past the breaking point. With her life spinning out of control, she’s got to figure out what she truly needs, what’s worth saving—and what to let go.” (Description from Amazon)

A Very Hogwarts Halloween
Forest Park
Monday, October 29
3:15 - 4:30 PM
All ages
Come one, come all to the Great Hall and celebrate Halloween Hogwarts style with your neighborhood librarians. Drink Butterbeer. Delight in magical snacks. Let your wand choose the wizard and be sorted into your Hogwarts house. Dance away the evening to some Muggle music and tax your brain with puzzles and games that stump even the cleverest of Ravenclaws. In the words of Ms. Granger herself: "When in doubt, go to the library!"

“If you’re writing about a gay boy or a black girl, you need to talk to a gay boy or black girl. You have to go above and beyond to get it right. The internet is a beautiful thing for a writer, but we have to put in the work. I think that’s key: Put in the work. Whether you’re writing about diversity or a legal thriller, you have to put in the work. Find the resources. Find the people. And when you find the people, please pay them. No one owes you anything — you owe them for their help!”
