Ahoy 🐾 my name is Atticus. I'm the self-proclaimed "Biggest" fan of the Scooby-Doo franchise. From tattoos, my car being decorated as the Mystery Machine, to the sheer amount of Scooby-Doo merchandise I own. My love for Scooby-Doo is very obvious, which is why I decided to start this blog. Not to praise the show and series in its entirety but to answer some questions that adult Atticus has like "How great is this long running childhood nostalgia?" "What are the villains actually like?" "How much does it cost to do these kinds of adventures?" Luckily for you all, I cover all of that and more in each of my posts. Welcome to Hannah Barbara chaos, make yourself at home! 🐢

"Scooby-Doo Where Are You?" (1969)
S1 Ep5: "Decoy for a Dognapper"
Air Date: October 11th, 1969
Review content warning: explicit language
Let's dive into the Villain in this episode. Our villain this episode is Buck Masters and maybe it's just me, but I hate this guy and let me explain why. For Starters he's a White Manℒ️ whose whole episode is kidnapping dogs so his dog could win the show. What a loser.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
His motive as stated above, He steals the top (2) competing show dogs and even his own to keep him off the suspect list. There isn't one, as cops seem to be too busy to deal with whatever the gang is doing that episode. He stands to win ($250,000) for a large show ($2000) from a small show, the size is never stated so you can decide.
Tumblr media
If you're going to be a villain - pick a name. Classic Scooby Doo is picking your name so that your legacy lives on. I'm saying this for you man, it doesn't affect me at all. Maybe playing your cards a little better would help with that as well. And a community so niche as well. I don't even think you stopped to look at the bigger picture. Embarrassing.
Tumblr media
Financial Breakdown as always:
Shitty Indian Costume: $30
Wooden ladder $470 for a 10ft "library ladder" which is extremely similar to the one shown in the show, you would easily need 2-3 to achieve the height needed.
3 dog kennels: $50 each / $150 all together.
Outdoor projector: $100
Maracas: $10
Large Wooden Crate: $130
2 cases of dog food: $52
Entry fee: 100$ for large show / $20-$50 for small
Stolen property: 3-6 months jail time and $1000 fine
Apparently, in today's world people are spending up to $170,000 on their show dogs a year to be in "show condition" for these kinds of events. Meaning that Buck Masters championship dog, in itself, is worth some $$
All to win a dog show. Potential $250,000 in big brand shows, anywhere for $200-$1000 in smaller shows.
Total for large show: -$172,042 (including dog maintenance)
Stand to make a gross profit of: +$77,958 I could see how this could be motive money.
Tumblr media
The man is pure evil, don't get me wrong, he sends Scooby locked into a crate down the railroad to be hit by the Midnight Express bullet train because he wasn't the right dog. Mind you - that's the henchmen's fault.
But yet, can't even grasp cultural standards and practices for the culture he is pretending to be from. He suuuucks.
Tumblr media
It's a 1/10 from me. Try harder. Try just once actually.

"Scooby-Doo Where Are You?" (1969)
Tumblr media
S1 Ep5. "Decoy For A Dognapper"
Air Date: October 11th 1969
"The gang investigates the disappearance of a prized poodle by using Scooby as a decoy to unveil the thief... until Scooby is also kidnapped."
...I haven't posted in a while, and this episode is why. I didn't want to do it. I didn't want to type out all the white guilt I felt while watching this episode. I was struggling to think of fun silly things to add when I first typed up this draft, But while strongly pawing at my own face, not feeling comfortable with what I had written at all. I finally caved and sat down to write this review correctly.
Tumblr media
I will start by saying, this is the most culturally insensitive episode so far - which isn't saying a lot, but we're only on episode 5. For starters, the Name "Geronimo" is used so often it hurts my brain.
For those of you who don't know Geronimo was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Ndendahe Apache people. From 1850 to 1886, Geronimo joined with members of three other Central Apache bands – the Tchihende, the Tsokanende (called Chiricahua by Americans) and the Nednhi – to carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona.
And there is just truly no substance to this episode other than Buck Masters is evil, and yet also somehow a bad villain??? But I will cover that in my villain review.
Usually I take this post to explain what the gang did wrong, or how they actually weren't that helpful after comparison to damage. In this case, I bite my tongue and say they really didn't do anything wrong. No elaborate trap, no ongoing chase scene, no Scooby being Scooby moment, nothing. Daphne does get captured but is short term.
Tumblr media
There weren't even finances to break down, no poke at crashing a boat, not even an elaborate trap that cost way too much.
Freddy made a slingshot out of a tree, and they caught him by the dogs chasing him up a tree. This episode sucked, Burt Masters sucks.
There's no happy ending about this episode. The remarks and comments made during this episode were so low I was even shocked to hear them myself. The entire episode is based on horrible indian stereotypes that we as a society have cancelled them. I wish I hadn't watched this, then rewatch this episode while debating in my own head about what to say. But as I'm writing out financial Breakdown for my villain post, I had to Amazon shudders "Indian Costumes" for a price point and I was shocked to STILL see these cultures still being viewed this way today. Unapologetically being shown in this light.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, I can say as a society we were just not there in 1969. We (as a society) had not learned to be upset when we view these kinds of things, in fact this was probably a very 'inclusive' episode at the time and Hannah Barbara really thought they were on to something. Which is unfortunate to see now.
I was never a fan of this episode, maybe because it wasn't really funny, or there were a lot of fluff scenes that didn't make sense. I honestly couldn't tell you why I was never a fan growing up, but (now) I can tell you the reason this episode bugs me is because it's extremely culturally insensitive.
Tumblr media
So there, I've done it! I've written out this review and we can now move forward into future episodes and laughs.
I'm sorry if this isn't the normal standard for my reviews, but even small cultural insensitives is not a matter we can overshadow with animation quirks, favorite quotes, and individual character stupidity.
My love for Scooby-Doo carries on, as I know we as a society have made progress and it truly shows in episodes like these - because episodes like these don't exist anymore.

"Scooby-Doo Where are You?" (1969)
Tumblr media
S1 E4: "Mine Your Own Business"
Air Date: October 4th 1969
"Scooby and the gang are called to investigate a deserted mining town that is possessed by the ghost of a 150 year-old miner."
Tumblr media
BABE. Let me tell you what's wrong with our villain this episode. Everything. Hank is our villain today and man he sucks. We've had some great villains with background and depth you could get behind. I mean just look at Captain Cutler. But Hank? Trash. The whole legend claims that the miner is back in search of gold and that he died in 1849, Coining him the name "Miner 49'er". I'm convinced that's the year Hank was born, but we all have our own conspiracy theories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hank became a villain to become rich off of oil?? Get this Geezer off my show and give me something more than everyday Americana! I spent a good 20 mins of my life watching this episode and all you give me is Hank??? Yikes Hannah.
The writers spent to much time sneaking Hank Williams into the episode, they forgot to write the mystery. It's not the Miners fault, however his lack of effort is. How did nobody stop, look at the miner and say "Huh, doesn't he look kinda like Hanks dad?" Or even a "doesn't he look like a taller, hairer version of Hank?" Nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Villain ranking: πŸ™„
-1 for not even changing clothes
+1 for stilt work.
Bringing him to a 5/10 villain. His truly ONLY saving grace is that man can hustle on stilts.
YUCK

"Scooby and the gang are called to investigate a deserted mining town that is possessed by the ghost of a 150 year-old miner."
While you know my dedication to this blog is forever, or until I find a more interesting time filler - I have to say, this is by far the most puzzle piece episode I have ever witnessed. Why did I never notice as a child that this episode sucked??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This episode doesn't even have a dollar amount in money spent because??? Nobody is injured?? I think the closest we came to damages is when the gang took the elevator, crashing it to the basement. But, the elevator was old and it's honestly their fault for putting so much trust into it. I don't think it was worth anything (personally) of you'd like to dispute this, I would love to hear it.
Damages:
-$250 in Floor Damage (if that - it was old)
-$25.99 (x2) for the 2 50lb bags of flour Fred broke.
Total:
$301.98 (2022) or $37.41 (1969)
Tumblr media
I would like to point out the size of the "Guest Ranch" in this photo because if you actually watch the video, size does not exist. Very 1980's mystery machine. Or TARDIS status for you nerds. I don't have much to say about this episode other than it sucks. Did I mention that already? So why is HANK a classic Scooby-Doo villain???
Tumblr media
Buuuut anyway, onto points for this episode! Because that's all you care about right? Are any of you keeping score?
Tumblr media
-1 point for Shaggy for reading the map wrong and landing them in Gold City. (Which is a real place in Oregon)
- 1 for all the gang for breaking into a safe.
-1 Fred for breaking through the floor
+1 Scooby+Shaggy for Train Impression
( +1 to the writers for the poke at "Mind Your Own Business" by Hank Williams Sr. )
This means Scooby and Shaggy are technically our most helpful characters this episode with a total of 0.
Which, surprisingly explains a lot of what happens in the episode.

Scooby-Doo Where are You? (1969)
Tumblr media
S1 EP3: "Hassle in the Castle"
Air Date: September 27th (1969)
Who doesn't love a well-played villain? I know I sure do. As much as Bluestone the Great is such a classic villain and overall great character, he doesn't exactly have motive.
No motive: no costs. I usually post these for a villain monitory breakdown, but this guy isn't out any money. I'm assuming since he's a magician that all the magic stuff was already his.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bluestone is wanted in 16 states, and somehow nobody ever found him?? What is the police force in Scooby Doo been up to exactly??
Taking over an abandoned castle and stashing your magic horde seems like a great way to avoid the law until a bunch of kids crash on your beach. ( And as we've seen in previous episodes, we always crash the boat )
Tumblr media
Though searching for pirates treasure has its own appeal. As I have spent many hours following "the hunt" for various treasures on National Geographic, I could see the appeal for a con-man to stray from his more public appearances.
As far as story goes, it's not much of a plot. Plus a bad background for such a great villain. Bluestone deserved better. #bluestonematters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Watery plot aside- Bluestone is one of my favorite villains - maybe because he's classic, or just a well executed character created by Hannah Barbara.
His points boil down to this:
+1 for his cackle. Man, half this episode is him cackling and I'll just never get enough of it. He had to have taken vocal training or years of practice to get his almost trademark laugh. We love a villain with a good cackle.
+1 THE DRAMA. This man is a con artist, and it shines through in his charisma. He goes above and beyond to not scare the children, but definitely make sure they were uncomfortable with every step of the way. The whole "fun house" vibe across the entire castle is notable to say the least. Who doesn't love floating sandwiches and talking/glowing skulls??
+1 for the portrait of him in costume (shown in image 2) I mean, it's a small bit that the animators could have absolutely done without. Personally, I'd like to this he put on his nicest sheet and had a lil photo opt when he was feeling good about himself :)
This puts him at a 8/10. And a gold star for perfect execution of a ghost in a castle. With an 8/10 score, he is in the running for best villain of the series. I hope he wins.

"Scooby-Doo Where are You?" (1969)
Tumblr media
S1 EP3: "A Hassle in the Castle"
Original Air Date: September 27th 1969
"While boating, dense fog causes the gang to land on a mysterious haunted island where they investigate the legend of Vasquez the Pirate's buried treasure."
Tumblr media
This is a pretty cheap episode as far as damages go. For both sides actually! Woot Woot. The gang didn't do major damage, but touched about every single object in the castle! All while trying to avoid the guy who's stuff they were touching. πŸ™„ Everytime I write one of these, I relate to the people who are the villains.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Break Down Of Charges: πŸ’°
Boat Rental + Damages: -$1,600
Trespassing: $100
Total: -$1,700
See? Totally cheap!
Tumblr media
The one thing that doesn't get explained is the ham sandwich bit. It wasn't even covered in the "we learned all the tricks sheriff!" Stunt at the end. I wanna know how to make a sandwich appear out of thin air.
Anyways ..
Tumblr media
Character Helpfulness: πŸ’ͺ🏻
Fred: +1 Point for being able to "start" the magic carpet
Daphne: -1 falling through the trap.
Velma: NO Points. Her one crowing moment was a group effort.
Shaggy: 0 Points, he spent the entire time living his best life in a fun house
Scooby: -1 for not being a team player at all this episode.
+1 for his John Wayne impression
+1 for Scooby pulling off the "rabbit in the hat" trick.
+1 for Him for being the one to actually catching the bad guy
This makes the Most Helpful Character of this episode. Scooby-Doo with a crowning amount of 2 points! πŸŽŠπŸŽ‰

"Scooby-Doo Where are You?" (1969)
Tumblr media
S1 EP2: "A Clue for Scooby-Doo"
Air Date: September 20th, 1969
"The gang investigate the legend of Captain Cutler when Scooby crashes his surfboard into a ghost wearing a deep-sea diving suit."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our Bad Guy this episode is Captain Cutler. I think the Beauty of Captain Cutler, is that he plays himself. This man faked his death, went into hiding, then proceeded to steal from the rich. He's living my fantasy. On top of it all, his wife is in on it.
He is captured when Scooby shoots off the dock, causing him to crash a boat ontop of Cutler.
Tumblr media
This man DIY'd his way to $$$. Using local lore (of himself) and local natural resources to create a great ghoul. He had some costs as well, so he's not in the green completely (get it??) Ahaha
Tumblr media
Mini Submarine: $1,138.79
2 Docks: -$33,072
Stealing Boats: -$1,000 Fine
Total: -$35,210.79
Since this aired in 1969, he owes: -$4,361.60
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8/10 Overall. I love the idea that this man spent 20+ years to πŸ‘πŸ»make πŸ‘πŸ» this πŸ‘πŸ» happen. He's a sailor, who steals from the rich and lives in a lighthouse. What more could you want from a man??
I love that his wife is a ride or die icon, even going as far as feeding the Gang the lore of her husband when they came to visit. Theres something to be said about a relationship like that. The back story is great, he's flipping boats on the side for extra money for him and his wife, and wearing a glowing vintage diving suit the entire time.
I had originally given Cutler a 10/10, but I had to take away some points.
-1 For harvesting rare local seaweed
-1 For managing to leave glowing footprints underwater
Bringing his score to the 8/10.

"The gang investigate the legend of Captain Cutler when Scooby crashes his surfboard into a ghost wearing a deep-sea diving suit."
Tumblr media
There isn't a lot going on in this episode, so why is it one of the more iconic episodes? It doesn't feel like a full 22 minutes, but what do I know? That being said, the episode does start with Scooby crashing into Captain Cutler in costume.
Man was just stealing and repainting yachts, with obvious plans to return them to their rightful owners. In this episode they truly are meddling. Going as far as to break into Captain Cutlers own house and interview his wife. The damages were minor, but still happened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1 Surfboard: -$600
1 Large Beach Umbrella: -$20
5 Diving suit rental: $120x5 = -$650
1 Boat Rental: -$1,100 (per day)
1 Diving suit damaged: -$800
1 small boat: -$500
Damage to underwater wreckage: Priceless
Total: -$3,670
Since this episode aired in 1969, they actually owe -$451.61
Tumblr media
What I did take notes on was character helpfulness, since there were a few situations that did need to be addressed.
Tumblr media
Freddy: -1 for the trap not working
Daphne: 0. Wasn't helpful at all.
Velma: +1 for looking up the glowing seaweed/having a biology book on hand.
Shaggy: -1 for trying to light a match underwater.
Scooby: 0. Was not helpful - though did catch the villain.
This puts Velma as the Most helpful Character in this episode. πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠ

"Scooby-Doo Where are You?" (1969)
Tumblr media
S1 Ep1: "What a Night for a Knight."
Air Date: September 13, 1969
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our bad guy this episode is the museum curator Mr. Wickles, Playing the "Black Knight". Its not a spoiler - it's been 53 years. Mr. Wickles uses his artistic abilities to recreate classic painting in the museum, switching them out during the night for the original pieces of art worth millions.
He is captured by Scooby and Shaggy hitting him with an antique plane during the crash into the Museum wall. Not the gangs best capture, but granted it's their first one. The Gang didn't do all the damages in this episode though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stealing museum property: -$2,500
Stealing priceless art: +$1 Million
Damage to the Museum: -$400
Kidnapping (in the UK): 10 Years Jail
Total: -$2,900 + 10 Years Jail
Being this aired in 1696 he actually only owes -$369.72
The exchange since this episode takes place in London: -Β£306.73
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6/10 Overall. I think is artistic abilities are *chef's kiss*. He isn't doing any harm to others (other than to himself working long hours). Plus, he decided to be a art thief of all things. All confidence and solid choices.
And compared to the Gang, this man made out way better than they did. $400 in fines doesn't seem that steep when you stand to make a cool couple million.
I have to give it to this guy though. He had a very British Museum vibe about him. I mean, the man decided to be an art thief ffs. Who wakes up and decides that? I mean.. if you got the talent, you might as well make some money off it.
Negatives:
All he did was groan! Though... part of me wonders if this is due to the gang running around and messing up every display in the museum. The other part of me wants to know why he didn't say more. You're an art thief! Where's the monologue??
In his defense, he did take a flying airplane to the chest.

"Scooby-Doo, Where are you?" (1969)
Tumblr media
S1 Ep1: "What a Night for a Knight"
Original Air Date: September 13th 1969
"Scooby and the gang search for a missing archaeologist when he mysteriously disappears leaving only a suit of black armour in his place."
Tumblr media
This is the first official case the Gang takes on, so bless their hearts for choosing a guy who's an freaking art thief. Their confidence says they've been doing it for years, but their execution of this case says otherwise.
Tumblr media
Mind you, the gang doesn't actually find the lost archeologist. In fact, they spend the entire time chasing around an Art Thief, doing 1,000's of dollars in damages to the property, and artifacts displayed.
Tumblr media
Breaking and Entering: (-$2,000 fine)
Damages to Antique Plane: (-$40,000 estimate)
Stole Vintage Jeweler glasses (+$125) - Scooby acquired these off a lion statue. but when police arrive, these glasses are never mentioned. They are also not returned to the owner after police leave.
Damage to Museum Wall: (-$400 estimate)
Total: -$42,275 total for this case.
In 1969, damages would have equaled out to -$5,237
This episode does take place in London, so technically -Β£4,342
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Freddy: +1 for discovering the secret room
Daphne: -1 for picking the wrong door
Velma: Nothing.
Shaggy: +1 for actually noticing missing artwork
Scooby-Doo: +1 for rebuilding the T-Rex display without issue and under 30 seconds.
This episode ends in a tie between Shaggy, Scooby, and Fred for most helpful character.
