Mystery Inc. (2025) “We’ve got some work to do now”
Happy new year, y’all. Worked on this for the past few days and I’m glad that I got it done in time to ring in 2025 with a modern Scooby gang. And here, I’ve written out a few thoughts on how that might go. Those that know me and have seen my art before will see that I am repeating myself (or just ripping off another post I did wholesale), but I digress.
If and when Warner Bros. actually decides to do a more mature and darker tv adaptation, drawing from what Mystery Incorporated did before, I had the thought that the Scooby gang wouldn’t necessarily go the route of literal supernatural mysteries or investigations, or at least not the majority of the time. I never caught up with the second season of Mystery Incorporated, but I do like the idea that they eased into the more paranormal events rather than doing it up front. I think narratively in a newer adaptation, they would solve more serious crimes that had gone cold from police investigations, and that would just so happen to involve masked criminals or “paranormal” circumstances to be uncovered.
Say they solve mysteries such as murders, disappearances, kidnapping, or the like, and in essence the gang becomes a real service to their community in taking up cases that would have otherwise gone ignored and forgotten. That may sound dark, but if the 90s movies like On Zombie Island and Witch’s Ghost, or Mystery Incorporated taught us anything, is that under the right hand you can strike a balance between sincerity and intensity. The franchise itself has always had to strike a balance between fear and absurdity, and creators have gotten away with a lot more than what one would expect from something as goofy as Scooby Doo (they do often team up with Batman, after all).
The gang can still uncover other crimes, like robbery, smuggling, counterfeiting, all the usual Scooby crimes, of course, but underlining it with the consequences of those affected might give each case more depth. Conceptually, I think the driving purpose in the gang’s mission needs to emphasize a foundation of not only compassion, but also pursuing justice.
In the spirit of the Scooby gang, I guess, I’ll take with me the ideal of helping others against bad actors who use deceit and intimidation to disenfranchise and victimize others. Sticking close to my friends and figuring out what the real problem is, unmasking the real villains in our lives. Overall, if a new, more mature adaptation can teach us anything, is the importance of skepticism and never losing sight that the scariest monsters are the ones we create ourselves. That maybe we don’t always see the clear picture, and that sometimes, if not always, the explanation can be elusive, but it’s never non-existent.
Happy new year, auld lang syne, and I look forward to creating more art for you all. 🎆🍾🥂

Hi hi, I was wondering if you had any recs for movies that had good Shaphne interactions or that you just enjoy in general?
Number one answer to be WELL fed is The Legend of the Phantosaur. That movie is so on top of showing you how good their dynamic is and shows how much she cares about him. It is a peak scooby movie as well so even if you don't love Shaphne you WILL love this movie TRUST.
I know that they aren't good movies but I do think that Shag and Daph's dynamic in the CN live action movies is so cute they are very heart eyes if you look through your shipping goggles 🤡🤡🤡. The theatrical live action films are fantastic and in my heart I think they are the best characterization of the gang but they aren't very Shaphne heavy. The first one is pretty Frelma heavy though so def watch it if they're your cup of tea.
I'll rapid fire a few more off the top of my head:
- Mask of the Blue Falcon (they have a fun antagonistic dynamic this movie which I ATE UP but the actual plot is lowkey boring 💀)
- Frankencreepy (random homage film to hot fuzz but it contains THE HUG)
- the KISS one (not a lot of Shaphne because Fraphne gets the b-plot this film but omg this movie unironically SLAPS)
- Stage Fright (I think this one is so funny but Fraphne also get the b-plot in this one)
- Music of the Vampire (I'm a sucker for random musicals)
- Camp Scare (they played this all the time on CN when I was a kid so this may just be for nostalgia)
I'm sure there are more but my mind is drawing a blank. Feel free to check out the movie posts on the blog because you best belive I combed every movie for even a CRUMB of content for yall (and mostly myself). If any of yall have faves feel free to add them on 👏👏👏

Hi!!! First of all can I just say how much I LOVE your page?!? I don’t really have a question, I just wanted to post some story ideas that I had that I thought you might enjoy.
Story ideas
Shaggy is a typical loner guy at school, not necessarily emo, he just prefers the company of animals (especially his dog Scooby Doo) Daphne is the popular girl (of course) but she sees Shaggy sitting underneath a tree during lunch birdwatching and eating a comically large sandwich. Let’s just say he’s piqued her interest. (Sort of like a Kristoff/Anna dynamic)
Shaggy becomes Commander Cool (for some unexplained reason that I never thought through) and Velma is the only person he tells because Fred is out of town for the time being, and Daphne can’t keep a secret to save her life. Velma agrees to he his “guy in the chair” (think Wade from Kim Possible) and assists him from her desk at home. While he struggles at first, he eventually starts to get the hang of crime fighting. One day, Daphne gets caught in a bank robbery and CC comes in to save the day. After seeing Commander Cool in action Daphne begins to wonder who this masked avenger really is.
Shaggy and Daphne have been dating for nearly a month now and they’re still the hottest topic of gossip at school. “What does she see in that toothpick?” “Ugh, she could do SO much better.” “She must have lost a bet or something.” “Either that or she’s doing it out of pity.” Needless to say, even someone, who can laugh at himself as much as Shaggy can, has his breaking point. But what can his loving girlfriend do if all he can say is, “I’m fine”?
Shaggy and Daphne are excited for Fiction Con (pretty much like Comic Con but copyright friendly, I know I’m so original) Daphne doesn’t tell anyone she’s going (she’s got a reputation to uphold) but Shaggy is letting everyone and anyone know he’s going and he’s proud of it! The day of the con, Shaggy goes in his Commander Cool cosplay and while he’s looking through the different booths and events, he comes face to face with the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen, in a Wonder Lass cosplay (In this universe, there is a female superhero named Wonder Lass who sometimes assists Commander Cool in crime fighting, it’s been a common theory among the CC fandom that Commander Cool and Wonder Lass will end up together.) Will Shaggy find out who this mysterious girl is before the 3-day con ends?
Sorry if this was a long post I just wanted to get these out there and share them with someone who loves Shaphne as much as I do. And maybe (just maybe) it can get other people’s creativity pumping and they’ll share their own stories and ideas.
Thank you so much! Keep up the great work!!
Actually these are all 5 star ideas and I'm honored that you're willing to share them with me. I love the idea of playing with the gang as a vigilante justice squad. I guess that's technically what they are IN CANON but like I would love to write them as like a spiderman type crime fighting gang. Shaggy would absolutely slay as the unwilling hero that is accidentally so good at it that he has to keep doing it even though he hates it. And I am weak for any sort of "helping them patch up their wounds" scene. Like, yall imagine that scene with Peter and Gwen in the first asm but with Shag and Daph??? UGH. That's good stuff.
I HAVE been writing but I'm a crippling perfectionist at like the Stanley Kubrick level, so I keep proofreading drafts to hone them to their ultimate form. These ideas will be stored away in the mental filofax for suuurrrreee but they may not see the light of day until I'm old and decrepit 💅💅💅
Or who knows I may post it tomorrow... you never know how productive you'll be as a fanfic writer 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Okay but- also imagine DAPHNE as the spiderhero and shaggy as the love interest.
Daphne for sure would put herself in danger as a vigilante and shaggy would definitely find himself as someone who needs saving, it could be cute.
Now THAT I can definitely see.
Maybe she sees that he's in danger and needs help so she does her thing and saves him but then he figures out it's her (like her mask got torn or something idk). Then he starts helping her out as her guy in the chair or her Ron Stoppable - whichever one is more appealing. And it is very clear that they have great chemistry but Daph is terrified to mess it up and Shags has yet to identify his feelings as something romantic. I'm talking the slowest of slow burns like completely agonizing. Pining and longing stares and treating each other's wounds because they can't go to the hospital.
But they're too scared to mess it up so they both probably cycle through different love interests before the epic two part finale arrives. In which Shags is identified to be the person she values the most (by the big evil bad guy). So he's in danger and she's trying to distance herself from him and he is not having it and it is very important that this tension manifests itself into a big fight on the roof of a building while it's pouring rain. And they are screaming at each other and the l word gets dropped and it immediately fizzles out and they just stare at each other.
And then Shags takes a step forward and she doesn't move and he says, "I'm with you to the end Daph..." And she knows it's true because he's been with her all this time.
And so she plucks up the most courage she's ever needed (and she faces danger on the reg so this is saying something) and responds, "After... After we beat this guy... do you... do you wanna get something to eat? Like us? Together? Alone?"
And he looks at her blankly for a minute before just smiling the biggest smile ever.

Velma show ruined the Gang
Tumblr media
This is so painful to read...
Mindy you didn't need to use the SD characters you could have just written something entirely new without tainting a beloved franchise.

Not me rolling my eyes when some members of the fandom screech at me for pairing an “obvious” lesbian like Velma with Shaggy or Fred when at most she is bi.
Is it because she doesn’t look like the conventionally attractive Daphne? Is it because of her glasses and bobbed hair? Is it because she’s smart?
Whatever the reason may be for the most popular fanon interpretation, Velma Dinkley is [also] attracted to men. Nothing wrong with that.
There are at least 10 guys she’s canonically interested in, even if they: turned out to be bad and she changed her mind; were just passing crushes.
(Side note: Admittedly, I’m on the fence on whether or not I approve of Velma x Sam Winchester bc it wasn’t stated in the crossover if the gang were considered teens still or adults, since Dean and Sam are obviously not teens and Sam’s disapproval of Dean’s crush on Daph stemmed from her being implied to be with Fred, and not the age difference, but the episode used is based on their earliest adventures of when they were teens, so yeah. On the fence until further clarification.)
In the Scooby Doo Apocalypse comics, she’s officially together with and happy with Shaggy.
In the Velma + Daphne books, she’s implied to be interested in Fred. (I really hope the author continues her series and explores those avenues further despite what the current movies and series say.)
I don’t see how these adaptations are an “insult” to her sexuality.
My hang up with the “confirmation” that Velma is “canonically a lesbian” I guess is mostly how it was executed and how they try to explain it.
In Mystery Incorporated, Velma’s relationship with Hotdog Water doesn’t reduce her to an babbling idiot. Neither do most of her relationships with the men. At most, she was adorably awkward, but still capable of being objective. Plus, if the male love interest in question was an irredeemable bad guy, no way would she compromise her morals!
With the Coco girl, on the other hand…yeah…Velma pretty much got the canon-character-in-this-medium-who-is-now-the-adoring-love-interest-of-the-mary-sue-self-insert treatment and was practically worshiping the ground this lady walked on on (I will acknowledge that Coco has a cute design; as for how Velma could possibly be attracted to her, I cannot tell you.)
Even her newest TV series doesn’t know what to do with her romantic/sexual orientation.
As a Frelma fan, I am unhappy that she is reduced to being a bitter jerk and that he is reduced to the stupid, self-absorbed and secretly insecure white boy born in privilege template instead of them both being likeable characters equal in intelligence in different areas.
As someone who sees Velma and Daphne as just really close opposites-attract-besties but will be objective for the sake of Delma/Vaphne shippers, it really bugs me when adaptations paint Daphne as mostly at fault for whenever caused their fallout as childhood friends and how they cannot have a civil conversation in their present years but oh-look-not-so-secret-belligerent-sexual-tension-explains-why-they-clash-and-why-now-they-should-be-considered-a-possible-thing instead of having them naturally drift apart for a few years bc school be like that, reconnect after some friendly, albeit awkward “oh how have you been? Oh fine i guess, you?” moments, be besties again, and then maybe lead up to a more natural and less rushed heat-of-the-moment developments. But nope. Suddenly they kiss at the end of episode 2.
As a formerly major and currently neutral Shelma fan, Norville (Shaggy) deserves better. That’s it.
So yeah, I’m annoyed by Trick or Treat, Scooby Doo! for claiming Velma as explicitly a lesbian now when they portrayed her romantic interest as such an insult to her core character, and moreso at the fans claiming it, James Gunn’s initial drafts of his films, and one of Velma’s live actress’s real life sexuality as the “correct interpretation” of Velma’s romantic inclination.
I’m annoyed at Velma the Series because whatever Frelma moments will happen, it will happen between the most negative and superficial interpretations of each character.
I feel like it's a little late to come forward and be like "Velma the Series" is a travesty and forever taints the otherwise fine Scooby-Doo repertoire. That is not a new observation especially with the news of it officially being the lowest rated show on IMDB. I knew from the minute it was announced that I wasn't going to be watching it. I just knew that the people working on this did not care or have a deep understanding of Scooby-Doo and why people like it.
I now feel validated in that initial judgement and can say with full certainty that I would rather watch Mystery Inc. (a show I have well vocalized my hate towards) for the rest of my life than even watch a MINUTE of Velma.
Velma as a character is loved and (although it obviously varies) she has a relatively consistent characterization across every show. She's the brains, she's the voice of reason, she's the skeptic. She acts as the person who keeps everyone down on Earth. And she is a great character but people always forget that she is great IN AN ENSEMBLE. She has the rest of the gang to bounce off of and the charm of SD is in that group chemistry. If you watch the show and think "Wow Velma totally carried this show" it's clear you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the SD franchise as a whole. Again, these observations seem moot at this point. Saying Velma is bad is like saying ice is frozen water.
What I will say is that it's upsetting that every character had their personalities stripped to just fit the very specific self-insert fantasy that Velma is trying to sell. Velma is no longer Velma, Daphne is no longer Daphne, etc. And that is obviously going to do no favors for Frelma at all. In every show (even MI) Fred and Velma are the brains. They're obviously smart in very different ways but anyone paying attention can tell that they are the ones who love to solve mysteries. They are a detective duo and are usually on equal footing. Obviously if you think Velma was the one carrying the team then you can't really portray her on equal ground with anyone.
But if I like Frelma, there is no way I am going to enjoy seeing the scale tipped so high in Velma's favor that Fred might as well not even be there. Their relationship dynamic is why people (me) love them and if that dynamic is done poorly then there's not much point in liking them.
Anytime Velma has shown any romantic interest in someone (male or female) she's typically pretty collected about it. Which makes sense - again she is the logical one in the group. And I suppose that only makes the discrepancies in her current character even more glaring.
I know that being bummed that we won't be getting well done Frelma/Scooby gang representation is a little ridiculous when we're looking at the other complaints made against it. The disappointment from the Indian community at how poorly they feel represented being the most important one (at least to me). Compared to that, this complaint is almost nothing. But it is also a reminder of what happens when people are given the rights to properties they clearly don't have any respect for. Riverdale having no respect for the Archie comics is another good example. I am hoping that all of the bad reception Velma has gotten will show that you can't just take any franchise you want and use it as a skin for your poorly written self-insert fantasy.

Shaphne reminds me of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson
I guess I could see it! Daph definitely has some MJ vibes (outside of the hair)!
But the only scenario in which Shaggy would EVER become a vigilante hero is because he was a victim of circumstance and is now being forced into it. Like he would never put himself in that much danger of his own free will. He would have to be convinced to do it. Especially if it was on a consistent basis.

I know it's an old post, but I love that trivia about how 13 Ghosts wanted to have Shaphne as a married couple. When I was a little kid in the late 90s, I always assumed in that series they WERE married (and the kid that was with them was their 'adopted' kid or something lol). Makes me happy it was intended, even if it didn't follow through.
Shaphne was truly THRIVING in the 80's like it was truly such a fantastic time for them.
It always reminds me that I'm not grasping at straws when I think they're cute. Like if the writers in the 80's were able to see the potential then so am I. Of course with rare pairs it's always celebrating the crumbs while the main pair enjoys the feast. Not really tearing anyone down (except maybe myself for always gravitating towards the rare pairs) just laughing to ease the pain.

I love your blog. I really love the DaphnexShaggy content. Do you have any fanfiction recs of this particular pairing you'd like to share?
These two honestly take up so much of my heart it's not even funny.
I'm honestly pretty picky when it comes to fics because characterization is super important to me. Like if they aren't in character than how am I supposed to get any sort of enjoyment out of it? And it doesn't help much when you dedicate all your attention to rare pair and their ao3 tag has only like 30 fics in it. And we can't forget a good chunk of those fics are my fics! I really only write them for myself and get surprised when other people like them as well.
Because I don't want to give you the answer that is just "Hey check out my works on ao3" I will tell you the one fic I enjoyed enough to bookmark so I can reread it whenever I feel like it (which is often).
This fic is called right side up or upside down by sirenofodysseus and it's just a super cute fun fic that I really think captures the Shaphne charm.

Hello! I hope you’re having a great day and I just wanted to say and ask a few things.
• You’re blog/page is my happy place, Frelma and Shaphne have my heart and soul. (Scooby and Nova from Mystery Incorporated is *chef’s kiss* in my opinion aswell)
• So, Shaphne gives me Lydia/Stiles and Lady and the Tramp vibes. What vibes does Frelma give you and basically you’re opinion on what kind of trope they are.
• Also, are you writing a fic because I would love to read it. I’ve got an idea for my own but I don’t know if I should.
Hi! I am having a fabulous time and I apologize for constantly vaporizing off the face of the planet. I am still alive and still love Shaphne and as I always say, I created this blog mainly for me and I am so glad that other people are being fed by it as well.
It is so funny that you say that Shaphne gives you Stydia and Lady and the Tramp vibes because I have written fics from both of these perspectives. So obviously we are 100% agreement on the vibes Shaphne gives off. I am always a sucker for the pretty and bubbly popular girl falling for the unapologetic outcast who helps her find her own self-worth. As for the vibes Frelma give me it is always very consistent. A sassy sarcastic girl and big himbo boyfriend is a tale as old as time. They give me big Hercules and Meg energy without any doubt. But the first one that always comes to mind with me is Brennan and Booth from the show Bones. I would sign away my whole life to watch a procedural crime drama with the Scooby gang and we get to see Fred and Velms become partners that totally aren't gonna fall in love.
Also yes I am currently writing a Shaphne fic which you can read here. And my advice to you is if you have an idea and you really want to write it than just go for it! Improvement cannot be reached without actually creating something in the first place. There are things I started writing when I was in high school that I still polish and I'm sure I'll keep polishing them till I die but it all starts with putting yourself out there!

Do you think shaphne would've fit mystery incorporated ?
Omg this is one of the things that keeps me up at night I honestly think about this all the effing time.
Now I have been more than vocal about my vast hatred for MI and I feel like I rant about it a lot on this blog. Almost as much as I talk about Shaphne if I'm being honest. However, despite how much I hate that damn show, it is the biggest reason why I started shipping Shaphne in the first place. Obviously the other one was Legend of the Phantosaur but that's not what we're talking about.
I honestly feel like for the amount of drama that MI was going for (especially in season two) adding in some romantic drama would be absolutely perfect. I can imagine that it would have been like this major plotline of the season three we never got. I'm picturing this situation where the situation from Night Terrors is like...actually talked about in some capacity and then it leaves Shag and Daph wondering if there's something more happening beneath the surface. Like this like angsty pining where they have these feelings for each other but they can't do anything about it because like every time someone in the friend-group tries to date it ends in disaster. And like Daphne could be dealing with this whole "I can't be into him I thought I was still into Fred."
Seriously I think that would be so perfect like I would eat all of that drama up so fast. Obviously this is not a probable thing to happen in my lifetime. It would have been nice to live during the 80s when Shaphne was thriving but whatever. I can live with being alive during the Night Terrors and Phantosaur era of Shaphne.
