       “ What? No! ” Robin glanced from the middle-aged asshole who had just walked out of the video store to Vada, who was leaning on the other side of the counter, inspecting her nails without a care in the world. Why was she still here, again? Was she actually gonna rent a VHS or not? Robin closed the cash register. “ You're joking, right? I'm not gonna... run a guy over just because he's a dick of a customer. ” At least she hoped the other girl was joking, and that this was just one of those situations where it took her a moment or two to realise that it was a joke.

       Glancing out of the store window, she watched the guy in question cross the street, VHS in hand. And have a nice day to you, too. Funny how it was never the kids who were rude, but the fully grown adult men who should have known better. “ Besides, that's Steve's car and I can't drive it, and even if I could, he'd kill me for scratching Valerie's precious paintwork. ”

       “ Move, move, move! Shit — ” Few in Hawkins High were prepared for the whirlwind that was Dustin Henderson running through the halls at top speed, backpack slumped over one shoulder as he tried to make up for lost time. Whirling around a corner, he narrowly avoided the path of two senior cheerleaders on their way to practice, but there was only one more turn to take before he reached the school theatre, and the backstage drama room that was the stage for his new favourite night of the week.

       And so he burst through the door, paper flying out of an unzipped pocket of his backpack, apologising as he crossed the room to the table Eddie had no doubt painstakingly set out earlier in the day. “ I know, I know, I'm sorry, math ran over — ” Plus he'd had yet another fruitless argument with Lucas over him ditching basketball practice for Hellfire, but it seemed he was determined to start hanging around with dumb jocks for some reason.

       But one wide grin from the club's Dungeon Master, and all of Dustin's frustration immediately evaporated. He grinned back, taking his seat at the table and rummaging around his backpack for his fabled character sheet. He glanced across the table at the rest of the players — Mike ( it was good to see he was here at least ), Gareth and the rest — before his eyes were drawn to the map in front of them. “ I didn't miss anything, did I? Is the goblin hoard still on the move? ”

The Hellfire Club table remained a masterpiece of organized chaos. Character sheets scribbled and re-scribbled, dice scattered like dragon bones, and Eddie commanding the center of it all like a long-haired warlord on the brink of his third caffeine crash of the day.

He stood at the head of the table with one boot propped dramatically on a folding chair, arms crossed, staring at the battle map like it had just insulted his prime deity of choice.

“ And lo, the hour grows late, ” he intoned grandly, voice echoing with the weight of a thousand fake prophecies. “ The warlock waits. The goblin hoard gathers. The fate of Hawkins teeters upon the edge of a blade… ”

The door creaked open. Eddie didn’t even look.

“ Ten minutes late, Henderson. I was this close to turning your gnome into a toad. A very ugly toad. ”

Then he did look… and grinned. Spread his arms wide.

“ But no. My faithful squire returns. ”

i feel like this shouldn't come as a surprise but robin is not particularly bothered about having children ? i think if her partner pushed for adoption or something along those lines later in life, she wouldn't necessarily object ( though it's not something she would bring up on her own ), but robin has never been maternal and only really warmed up to hanging around with younger kids and taking on that older sister role through her friendship with steve. she also knows that she will undoubtedly be the aunt to steve's brood of children and being their fun aunt is more than enough for her

       You got it. Did she though, or was Steve just saying that in order to make her feel better? Robin had watched him from the passenger seat countless times over the past few months — not always consciously paying attention to his driving technique, mind you, but he always seemed relaxed at the wheel of his car. The roads around Hawkins weren't exactly a busy city highway, as her slow drive along this long, empty strip of asphalt proved, but even when they'd ventured into Indianapolis on a weekend in search of some record that Steve really wanted to get his hands on, nothing — not other drivers, or jaywalkers, or the fact that he was driving a lethal weapon capable of killing someone at high speeds — really fazed him. The logical part of Robin's brain knew that the confidence likely came from time and experience, but she somehow couldn't imagine the suave ex-King of Hawkins High ever being the nervous wreck of a driver that she was.

       She wanted to relax, even before he said it — and yes, she had nearly forgotten to breathe for a second so the reminder was helpful, even if the playful nudge nearly made her jump up in her seat. But what really filled her with a sense of abject panic was when Steve pointed out her speed. Robin looked at the speedometer, and then glanced out of her side window at how slowly the rows of corn were passing them by. “ How fast is faster, Steve? ” With how intensely she'd been concentrating on controlling her steering and staying centred on the correct side of the road, she'd really thought that she had been driving faster than she actually was. The thought of having to do all of that at much higher speeds was terrifying. “ But what if I... lose control of the steering and hit something? ”

      THIS TIME  when robin’s foot pushes down on the pedal ( the right one ), it’s gently, with caution. &  the bmw slowly begins to inch along the country road, one neat row of corn passing by his window at a time.  ❝ that’s better. a lot better. see, you got it, ❞  steve says with approval in his tone while offering an encouraging nod. but when he glances over at the speedometer, it’s barely skimming the twenty. & in spite of the slow pace, robin has her hands locked in place around the wheel, the straight line of her arm betraying how tense she still is. in addition to how uncomfortable it looks, steve also knows that being too rigid can actually slow your reaction time when you’re driving. his yelling before probably hadn’t helped calm her down though. so now he consciously slouches down in the passenger seat, finally dropping his grip on the door handle in hopes that if he looks calm, she will follow suit.

     ❝ remember to breathe, too.  you can’t drive if you pass out, ❞ he jokes, leaning over the center console to gently nudge her ribs with his elbow.  ❝ you’re doing fine. relax a little bit, ok ? ❞  but the car only continues to crawl along at the same slow pace, in the same straight line, miles of road ahead before the next curve thanks to indiana’s squared off county map.  steve tries to be patient, fingers now tapping along to a vague rhythm on his knee, but after a few minutes in which they barely cross half of the vast field, he glances over at robin again. ❝ but just for your information, you’re going about 19 miles an hour right now, & 25 is the lowest speed limit for any federal roads, so… you’re gonna have to go a little bit faster sooner or later. ❞

Stranger Things Chapter Eight: Papa | 4.08

       Nothing strange ever happened in Hawkins. Even cycling through the woods from school back to her house, as was her route every day since the start of middle school, was so uneventful that the worst thing she could imagine stumbling across was a bear — and that had never happened in Roane County. But Robin had heard about the Byers boy going missing a few days ago — his brother Jonathan had been putting up posters all over school, and she could only imagine how angry her mom would be with her for taking this route home — and now maybe, face to face as she was with an unfamiliar girl, wearing a hospital gown with a spaced out look in her eyes, she had to concede that maybe, this November, her comprehensive assessment of Hawkins as a tiny speck of nothing, lost in the Indiana wilderness... was no longer quite true.

       Robin nearly stumbled back as the girl's finger pressed between her eyes. She blinked. “ OK, uh...” Her brain was struggling to comprehend what she meant by in there. “ Seeing as I haven't yet mastered the language of telepathy, I could... take you back to my house? ” It sounded like a terrible idea even as she said it. How was she going to sneak another fully grown teenager into her bedroom? “ There's a phone. You can use it to call your parents? Tell them where you are? ”

i won't judge you. i just need to know what happened. ( from robin! )

alice is a very smart girl. she's been told, it's been brought out of her with needles and prodding and hurting, so much hurting. she doesn't trust people. she doesn't trust anyone. big glassy eyes stare at the girl, robin, robin like the bird. she says, i won't judge you. and she doesn't seem like the type to, in the sense that alice knows the judges of the world and robin doesn't fit there. and she asks, what happened? and what happened. the fire. the fire happened, and the thinkering, the prodding. the hurting. she swallows, doesn't remember the last time someone, anyone, someone else, talked to her.

alice clears her throat. speak alice! use your outside voice, the one you do not recognize. need. such a curious word to use, isn't it? for me to tell you, what happened, well, i need to trust you. bracing for the fall, thinks alice. and she does that much better, thinking rather than talking. "not here." she says plainly, because it is never safe. outside, he can hear her. on the outside. "-we need to talk somewhere else." eyes piercing, when she lifts her hand, index finger pressing in between robin's eyebrows, "-in here." she states.

okay so it took only one set pic of gaten for me to want to launch into a lengthy meta but here we go lmaooooo. i'm not tagging this post as spoilers but you can find them below the cut !

right so to preface, this is purely based on this set photo that has popped up in recent days, along with the official first pic of gaten here. obviously i will be theorising a lot here ( and i do really enjoy theorising and seeing whether i end up being correct or not ) but what these pics concretely tell us: in the first pic dustin is seen in front of eddie's grave. eddie's grave has been defaced, dustin has grown his hair out to look a lot like eddie, he's wearing his hellfire shirt ( which is ripped... we don't know yet what has caused this ), he's wearing rings ( eddie's rings ? ), he's pulling the exact face eddie pulled in s4 in the official pic which i'm sure is not a coincidence. basically, we are putting together a picture here that dustin has not only been affected a lot by eddie's death, as i'm sure we all expected, but also that he is now trying to become a lot like him. we obviously don't know whether dustin has begun to imitate eddie's behaviour yet, but appearance wise it's fairly obvious lmao.

now, as another preface: i don't necessarily think that imitating an older role model is a bad thing. dustin has been influenced by steve in the last few seasons and that has had a noticeable impact on him and his character since s2 ( i.e. continuing the use the farrah fawcett hairspray, dustin becoming more confident in himself etc etc. they're subtle signs, but they're there ). but i will say that under these specific circumstances, dustin looking like eddie here is a big red flag for me because it's tied in with eddie's death and therefore seems to me like a trauma response.

if it's not bad enough that dustin will no doubt feel a lot of survivor's guilt over eddie's death, eddie is also ( very clearly from the graffiti ) still considered a murderer and the cause for all of hawkins' woes ( assuming that the hellscape depiction at the end of s4 still stands; obviously we don't quite know yet what the time skip will be between s4 and s5, people are speculating s5 will take place in '87 or even '88. so this could be nearly two years on from eddie's death and his name is still tarnished in the town ). dustin therefore has the added weight of knowing the true eddie and no doubt wanting to clear his name. i can see that being dustin's major motivation going forward, and probably a part of the reason why he is still wearing the hellfire shirt and why he's grown his hair long and has modelled his appearance on him. partly out of resistance against those voices who still blame eddie, and partly out of his own sense that he's continuing eddie's legacy or memory by imitating him in this way.

so my tl;dr; here is that i don't think dustin being super inspired by/almost "becoming" eddie in st5 is a good thing, and i am nervous about whether the writers/the duffers are going to properly delve into dustin's psychology in why he is acting this way, or whether they have just decided that since eddie isn't going to be in st5, they need the next best thing ( someone who acts like eddie ). which also just makes me wonder why tf they didn't keep eddie alive in the first place. but y'know. this is what they're doing.

so let's be honest, i'm gonna complain no matter how st5 goes, however if there's one simple thing i request ( considering that hawkins is presumably now a hellscape and the army have moved in ) it's to not continue pretending like robin & steve's parents don't exist
