Love never dies a natural death. It dies because we don’t know how to replenish its source. It dies of blindness and errors and betrayals. It dies of illness and wounds; it dies of weariness, of witherings, of tarnishings.

• imbolc / st brigid’s day in lockdown •
tend to your garden, be it indoors or out; plant bulbs and clear away old, dead things to make space for the plentiful new growth to come
enjoy the muted colours of the day, only lighting candles once the faint cold blue of the evening is falling like a dusky curtain over your room
light mismatched candles in a metal tray on your coffee table and let the glow throb peacefully as you move around the house, making things comfortable for the night
cook a stew, one pot meal or oven-roasted vegetables with plenty rosemary and bay and sea salt and let it simmer, bake or roast while you create a nest for the evening
in your cocoon of blankets, you can finally enjoy the slow-cooked meal that you’ve been looking forward to all day
just like the little creatures in burrows and in hollowed-out trees, your hibernation will soon be ending; enjoy the final nights of rest in tranquil darkness before the bright warmth of spring brings renewed vigour to your days

The romanticism of snow falling on creaky old buildings is the only force strong enough to motivate me to write on a Sunday morning

Science Saturday
With the recent news of Milwaukee Public Museum’s plans for relocation to the “Deer District” on the northeast corner of Sixth and McKinley Streets in downtown Milwaukee, I thought it would be good to look back on the history of the museum with its 1982 centennial publication A Special Style. It was written by the American anthropologist Nancy Oestreich Lurie, and designed by Mary Podella and Gregory Rush, and it was printed by Inland Press in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
Milwaukee Public Museum was chartered in 1882 and opened to the public in 1884, and it has had four different locations over its almost 140 year history. The collections date back to 1851 with the founding of the German-English Academy in Milwaukee, whose principal Peter Engelmann encouraged student field trips and the collecting of various types of specimens for study. Adults also took notice of the collections and would donate their specimens and eventually a large collection of organic, geological, archaeological, historical, and ethnological objects formed. Engelmann founded the Wisconsin Natural History Society to manage and expand the collection.
In the foreword to A Special Style, 1982 museum director Kenneth Starr wrote that the museum began in 1882 with a collection of 20,000 objects that were largely a legacy of the Wisconsin Natural History Society started by Peter Engelmann. By 1982 the number of objects it holds was three million, and currently in 2021 it has over four million specimens.
