I'm writing with surprising ease as of late. Perhaps it's the magic of being elsewhere, perhaps it's because I solemnly promised some people I know that I would take a little break from mathematics. Either way, it's nice to struggle again with the written word though I must admit, I miss mathematics rather dearly and will be speedily returning to it. The goal, of course, is to strike some kind of balance in the near future and then to maintain it.

One of my profs last semester told us the importance of printing our essay and reading it once more before submitting it. (granted, if you have resources because printers and ink are so expensive). But my brother gave me his old printer with some ink left. I noticed I didn't dread the editing experience for my last two essays and found spots to improve. There is a vast art to writing an essay, and I plan to hone this and be better at academic papers.

it's hot and humid — the sky bursting open with rain and thunder when you least expect it. the same old trek of autorickshaw, metro, walking in the heat, except in another city. thinking, writing and discussing a lot about what it means to be feminist, what it means to be woman. what does care and care work look like? detours perhaps but detours are necessary. also extremely frustrated with how quickly my body tires.

Cut the dopamine supply. Work in short, controlled bursts (20-30 minutes max) — even when you feel like working longer. Leave tasks unfinished. This forces your brain to stay engaged in the background without burning out. Delay gratification. After each session, step away. Don’t check results or keep pushing. Low-dopamine environment. Limit phone use, social media, and even music that triggers a dopamine spike.

monday | february 17

i finally sent in my application to work in one of my department's biochemistry labs over the summer - it's competitive, so i'm doing my best not to get my hopes up, but i know i'll be disappointed by a rejection no matter what. it's impossible to pursue new opportunities without opening yourself up to failure, but that doesn't make the prospect any less frustrating.
