Teaserssss?
…mayhaps a segment?
Nam-gyu trudged up the stairs, constantly searching for something that wasn’t even there. He’d scan behind him as he clawed up each step, slinging one arm over the other.

“So, what did you get?” Nam-gyu said at Mi-na’s return. “Are they a thing or not?”
“They were something, not anymore though.” Mi-na stopped at that.
Signaled by the heated buzz of sirens to take their positions, the pink guards stop the players from conversation. No longer hiding, but breaching forward. O or X, everyone wanted to know the results. How many players remained, and how much they earned from their hard work.
Questions that would soon be answered.
According to the guards, the headcount dropped to a hundred, giving everyone a generous winning of 356 million won. Cash stuffed the piggy bank to the brim.
With that, the voting began. For once, it was at its smoothest. Not a single interruption from a crazed ‘X’ shaming those who didn’t agree. They pressured the little tolerance that remained with another fruitless interruption.
Numbers dwindled; scores shot upwards. Beeps and buzzes cleared the air of blue and red. As usual, the “O” s led the vote.
At the call of number 230, Mi-na knew she was in for another fun display. Thanos could turn any ordinary act into something fun. He skipped with great enthusiasm down the aisle, achieving such height that he might fly. Thanos would then smother his lips over that blue button, giving it the biggest smooch it deserved. To finish it, he formed a circle with his arms, bouncing his upper body.
“C! I! R! CLE! Let’s goooooo!” Thanos said. Like a cheerleader hyping up the rowdies. How the firm ‘O’s applauded, rejoicing with each vote that increased their chance of another gamble.
It isn’t rocket science; the more money, the softer the place to land.
‘Player 196.’
Mi-na hurried toward the voting machine. At the moment she hovered above the button, she heard Jun-hee.
“If you really want to help me, let us leave. Don’t pretend you care when you’re giving your life away.”
It disgusted the round woman, by what Mi-na stood for. A sound reason to retreat did not exist, even if desired. And she had no means of ripping off a perfectly aligned patch.
Thanos threw the players away to get to her, delivering an ecstatic hip bump.
“Right there, you and me!” he said, their prize glowing from above.
“We did a good job.”
“Damn right, we did.”
Some chose ‘O’. Others selected ‘X’. The vote grew closer and closer to the end.
Min-su would then be called to vote, with Nam-gyu following close behind. Practically breathing down him.
“Cmon my boy, just one more game,” Thanos whispered, shaking Mi-na’s shoulders.
“He’s going to vote ‘O’,” Mi-na said, but the longer Min-su stood over his options, the less sure she became.
The boy then dropped his hand with the weight of a cement block. By far the bravest and boldest choice he’ll ever make. He exchanged the new patch and patted it down.
“What is he doing?” Mi-na gasped, watching as Min-su joined the red side of the room. They were without an option. She couldn’t make sense of it. Why now? Why the change of heart?
Nam-gyu slammed his fist down on the blue button, taking his place with a locked jaw.
Of everyone, Nam-gyu was the most insistent that everyone would vote together, his desire almost overriding Thanos.
By the end of the vote, it was a tie of 50/50. Meaning, come tomorrow, another vote to decide their future.
Min-su wouldn’t be able to avoid it, escape the wrath of the men. The moment everyone dispersed to get their rations, Thanos and Nam-gyu harassed their way to Min-su. Spouting greetings with smiles bared to bite.
“Min-su! Hey, come back! We just wanna talk!”
“Cmon Min-su! Where are you going? We talked about this, you bastard!”
A blood oath written in the stars, and Min-su fled.
Mi-na had her own questions to ask, but hunger took over. She took her time to sink her feet into the murky water. It became time to allow them to dry.
So Mi-na went in line alone. Even though their meals resembled food court fare. Everything had a gold quality when hungry.
Today’s meal was soda in a glass bottle and something wrapped in crappy tinfoil. When she sat and unraveled the mysterious containment, inside was a roll of gimbap and a fork. The bap tasted fresh, and the vegetables crunchy, the rice coming undone with every bite.
The trio departed several minutes prior. Thanos liked to take his time; it was nothing out of the ordinary. Min-su would come around, even if it meant getting tussled about. The three of them would come back, huddled like college buddies, with Min-su sandwiched between them.
Ten minutes passed, maybe even fifteen.
Mi-na didn’t worry when opposing voters started ridiculing each other, persuading a change in their votes. From mockery, the situation turned to insults, then threats, and shouting.
She also thought little when the shouting matches overlapped her chewing, and she was still sitting alone.
Once Min-su fled through the exit door, Mi-na grew concerned. Oddly, no one followed behind him. He moved toward the sector removed from the ‘O’s, not even daring to look over his shoulder to see if anyone was watching.
Mi-na thumped her foot along the metal staircase, peeking at the silver gleam of the fork that she used to finish her meal. Her face reflecting off the metal, the image stretched like one of those mirrors in funhouses.
Where were they? What was taking them so long? She watched the stupid door like a hawk.
The guards had cleared the tables, grabbing the milk crates with portions of untouched food and drink. Thanos and Nam-gyu had to use their strength. Nothing fazed those soldiers, no matter how Mi-na tried to sweet-talk them. So, Thanos and Nam-gyu would starve. But, drugs always helped more than anything.
Only after it had been at least half an hour did she worry. What were they doing? It had nothing to do with Min-su anymore.
A school bell rang, the bass taking the low notes to a rupture.
‘The following players have been eliminated.’
Mi-na’s hair stood on end, collective confusion bordering a deafening silence. Mi-na couldn’t recall anyone orchestrating an extra game, so how had more people died?
The first player was called; it was forever a wonder how only three numbers placed together could hold such power. Even, odd, even. Something she only ever heard in her dreams, now sharp-cutting to reality like shards of broken glass.
‘230’

And that’s all for now! See yall in December ❄️

By the time Thanos and Mi-na returned to the dormitory, Nam-gyu jetted to his feet. Merely to glare upon observing their clasping appendages. That alone was pleasing to Mi-na.
Nam-gyu and Min-su had at first huddled in their usual spots. Alive, but never acting like it; with Min-su’s head hung low, and Nam-gyu vibrating with ferment.
Thanos hugged Min-su again, squeezing so tight the boy folded like a metal chair.
“My little boy, Min-su! I’m so happy to see you again, bro!” he said. “I wanted to run with you, but I owed it to my senorita. You get it.”
Min-su locked eyes at the mention of Mi-na, face squished with Thanos’s crushing weight. Then glanced away.
Still stuck in Mingle, Mi-na now a kind face morphed to another jerk that wronged him. How virtue repays you.
Time and time again, she assured herself she was justified. She gave him the chance, and he blew it. He wronged her first. That idiotic expression, or deficiency thereof, rendered fairness undeserved.
“I can’t believe I left you with this douche.” Thanos said, and pointed to Nam-gyu, who laughed even though it wasn’t humorous by any means. The vibrations seemed to double.
“Let’s play one more game, okay?” “You’ll play one more, right?” Nam-gyu said, pawing his arm on the other side.
From then they were back to waiting it out, perched in their rightful places.
No one took his seat. To be fair, no one ever wanted it. But it was still his. Even with their disinterest and carelessness paraded.
The seat was still empty; her feet felt trapped in cement. Ice cold and numbing, simple movements could leave scratches.
There would never be an icebreaker again.
He was so quiet; his face, everything about him blended into the background. Who was there, with a voice and name. He kept company; he wasn’t annoying but tolerable, the most tolerable.
Gyeong-su.
How can a man be gone if no one realized he was there?
Thanos cut through the silence, saying, “What’s wrong, Flower?” He rarely regarded teammate sentiment, an eccentricity in itself. It made her prickle with delight.
She denied any trouble, not wanting to bring back fresh wounds.
“You sure?” He nudged her, so she said the name that followed.
Thanos shifted, taking a comforting arm off of Min-su. “Gyeong-su, huh?” There was a weight in his voice.
“I always forgot about him.” She said, “Now I can’t, and I want to more than ever.”
Thanos would place his arms around her waist, resting his head along the side of her own.
“Dang, that’s heavy.”
“Yeah, pretty heavy.” She sighed.
He was quiet for a while, pressing his chin against her shoulder.
“Don’t feel too bad,” he said. “It just means we get to play more games for our boy. You’re with me, right? One more game?”
“.. Always.”
He pressed his face close to her ear.
“Attagirl.”
She couldn’t help but smirk at his words. She caressed his cheek, an unspoken appreciation. There was nothing to hide anymore.
They stayed that way for a while. She would wonder how long it would take for him to disappoint her. And for him to do the same.
Thanos rambled, drawing upon random concepts. Thoughts odd enough to prevent slumber. It made her look forward to the evenings even more, seeking companionship in the quiet. Mi-na listened. She would wonder how long it would take for him to disappoint her. And for him to do the same.
Nam-gyu cut in when Thanos was bickering like a horse, contemplating the amount of ‘su’s in the area.
“Yo, hyung, hyung. Look at those two.” Two individuals rose from shadowed bunk coverings in the space. One of whom was none other than MG Coin, and a small girl Mi-na had never seen.
“What’s going on?” Thanos said
“Maybe they’re a thing,” Nam-gyu said.
Hardly. The girl looked like she wanted to crawl out of her skin. MG Coin clutched his hands, as if amid a declaration of love.
“That bastard sure is lucky, even in a place like this,” Thanos said, before smiling at Mi-na cheekily. “Not the only lucky bastard, though.”
“Okay, sweet talker.” She swatted his arm in good-nature.
The girl walked off, leaving a desolate MG Coin and Mi-na with an itch to know more. An itch Mi-na was eager to scratch. An untold story, a lovers’ quarrel perhaps? Or something worse. The greatest entertainment.
“I can get some dirt,” she decided.
“What are you gonna do, spy on them? How low.” Nam-gyu said.
“Don’t you want to know too? It’s gossip about your favorite person.”
Thanos laughed. “You’re always up for some drama.” He said. “Go for it.”
She rose from her seat, smoothing perspiration from her pants, finally, something to occupy herself.
“I’ll be back.” She said, tilting Thanos’ head up to kiss him. Long enough to look Nam-gyu right in the eye and rub it in.
“Don’t take too long,” Thanos called after her, visibly brighter in tune.
Then, Mi-na departed the dormitory. If she had to guess, MG’s mystery girl went to the bathrooms. She had the pathway memorized by now.
When she entered the bathroom, it was quite empty, just as she had hoped. It had a clean and sanitary scent. Running water greeted Mi-na with blasts from the faucets.
Amidst the din, softer sounds persisted; they remained audible. Almost like sniffling. Mi-na knew those sounds.
So, like any great person, she waited it out, avoiding any uncomfortable situation.
Arguably, she had seen better days but the games have favored her. Circles were forming from the lack of sleep, sweat stains in the most unfortunate places. No question, reeked. Other than that, she pulled it off.
Soon enough, the stall door opened. That girl reappeared. Player 222, with an ‘X’. A tiny girl with a round body, blonde highlights fading at the trim of her wolf-cut. Sculpted features form the perfect visage. Riddled now with exhaustion.
Mi-na clasped her hands in delight, feigning excitement. “Oh my gosh, hiii! You were in there forever; I thought you’d never come out.” Mi-na said. “You'd think they’d have some pads. Another reason this place sucks, but it’s fine cause money.”
The girl snapped up, her immaculate face wiring as she tried to take in the welcoming greeting. Mi-na didn’t stop yet as she leaned against the sink.
“And you’re soo cute! What’s your name, sweetie?”
“Jun- Jun-hee,”
“Now, that's pretty. I’m Mi-na. It’s so nice to talk to another girl here. No offense to the boys, but we need a break, don’t you think?”
Love-bombing, compliment the looks, create a sense of security. Throwing people off a rail is such a thrill.
“Love the piercings too. I’ve thought of getting a pair, but I just could never pull it off.”
She smoothed out her face, checking from all angles in the mirror.
Then go for the kill.
“It’s no wonder that ‘3’ guy has his eye on you.”
Jun-hee paused, droplets of water half soaking the paper towel used to wash her face.
“How do you-?”
“Everyone's talking about you two, and the man is not subtle.” Mi-na said. “You can smell the desperation from a mile away; it’s almost cute.”
Jun-hee soured at that.
“Almost.”
Jun-hee sighed, turning off the faucet.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” She said.
“You can’t blame a girl for being curious.”
“There's nothing going on!” she said, her eyes getting puffier with every word squeaked out.
What MG Coin did to the unfortunate woman proved worse than Bitcoin fraud. No one can cry harder than heartbreak.
“..Was he the one that made you cry?” Mi-na asked, taking on a more serious tone.
When the girl said nothing, it was the strongest answer provided.
“I thought as much. You'd think a guy would know how to treat his girlfriend by now.”
“He’s not my boyfriend.”
“Could’ve fooled me.”
“We’re not together, not since..it’s none of your business. Can we please drop it?”
Usually Mi-na would push more, but the woman looked destroyed.
“Fine. But if he bothers you again, I can see to him getting beaten up. No one asks for negative attention, so..it’ll be our little secret.”
Jun-hee paused, as if considering, then she shook her head.
“I can handle him on my own.” She turned to leave, then the woman gestured to Mi-na’s patch. Now in strength and disgust.
“If you want to help me, then let us leave. Don’t pretend that you care when you’re handing your own life away.”
Finding drama wasn’t as fun as she had hoped, and she didn’t feel any better in the end.
The woman was gone, and the itch still festered.

It was all a misconception; they weren’t indestructible, and it was slowly sinking in.
Following the third round, six players were required to form a group. Physically, it was by far the toughest round. They all fought to survive, discarding pawns along the way.
Nam-gyu gained entry by wrestling a man from the doorway. Locked doors notwithstanding, he eagerly awaited his ruin.
Min-su sat in the corner of the blue room with his knees bent.
A small group had scooped him up soon after Mi-na had deserted him. He cheated death that day, then shunned her.
She expected a petty dig from Thanos after the reunion, but it was like his mind was washed dry. Without a doubt, disdain still lingered.
As Thanos drifted off to the loud bangs, Mi-na watched. His frequent intoxication didn’t seem to bother him—a fortunate trait. And not just for his own help.
Her attempt at subtlety failed; he saw her looking.
“You still mad at me?” He said.
“What gave it away?”
“I can feel the cold shoulder from here, girl. C’mon.”
Thanos huffed, rolling his shoulders. “I don’t like you ignoring me, you know. It hurts.”
“Don’t act like you care now.” She said, then scoffed.
“Who said I didn't?”
“You sure have a funny way of showing it.”
“I didn't mean to leave you hanging. I shoulda been looking after you. Sorry, girl.” Thanos said, “but I gotta look after my boy, too! And you put him in danger. That wasn’t cool.”
“You’re one to talk.” She said, “I get it. You did what you had to, but you don’t get to lecture me. Sober or not, we carry the blame together.”
He bonked his head against the wall, skidding down to her height.
“Ff.. yeah. You’re right, you’re right.”
“You said we needed to work together. You started it, not me.”
He rubbed his eyes, fingers pressing to the bridge of his nose.
Her anger flared, mixed with utter confusion. “Oh my god, you don’t understand, do you?”
She didn’t care who was watching, listening.
“I stayed for you,” she said. “Not Min-su, not Nam-gyu, nobody else. You.”
Every word was raw honesty. Her affection remained, though changed.
“And that scares the hell out of me.”
Thanos took one of her braids and held it delicately.
“I’m sorry,” he said again, and this time he meant it. “How can I make it up to you?”
It was always those little frowns, small and subtle, that betrayed his inner state.
“Just don’t leave me again. I need to count on you, too.” She said, almost pleading.
“I won't. I won’t abandon you.”
His words brought relief, and she felt a burden lift.
“Promise?” She held out her pinky.
Thanos hooked his pinky with hers. “Promise.”
Nam-gyu cleared his throat. “Yeah, can you two not right now? Fucking disgusting.”
The whole drill concluded. Lots of deaths, lots of eliminations. Lots of time to wallow and pray that you live another day.
But no longer, for it was the final round.
They stepped onto the platform and saw to its last rotation. A concluding end to the carousel ride. A circling still so haunting. She took one last look at the sculpted horses, bouncing without a squeak in their copper. Perhaps now, the marble mares will be in her favor.
Thanos was uncharacteristically silent, taking in the land like an outlaw in those American movies. So help her if he somehow fucks up, that the second chance she gave him was for nothing.
She could sense it then, when the vibrations of the gears jittered, that they would soon begin a last race to safety. Rightly so she was.
All the liquids, or lack thereof, quenched in her gut as the doors soon become an outstretched trail of fuzzy shapes. Nausea and wreckage with enough blood to mop the floors.
Two.
Such a convenient number to end on, making it easy for one person to handle. Or so it seemed.
Thanos looked down at her, afterward at Min-su and Nam-gyu. Whom would he choose?
He began whipping his head around, gurgling from his throat as he dodged between the three of his options. Thanos’s decision halted Nam-gyu’s own gurgling.
“Argargargagghh-Señorita!”
Thanos snatched Mi-na up and made a run for it. Nothing could compare to the relief she found from his hand. Clammy and dry, keeping her close as he once did. Trampling through the blood, still wet and prone to slip.
Thanos chose her. He always did. And in the one moment in which he didn't, he chose her again.
Everyone was fighting for their lives to get into the vibrant little safe rooms, busting for a haven. Hardship marked their journey in every location. Quick glances caught in between the sprint Thanos launched them in.
A pink door caught her eye, and also another group’s.
Instinct defying morality. Priority corrupting kindness.
A long-haired player stood before her, hair flowing. Player 251. Mi-na was familiar with the number; it belonged to her first victim.
Mi-na snatched a handful and yanked it hard, hard enough to reel the woman backwards. She experienced plenty of cat fights and always relied on long hair.
Thanos joined in on the fight. A powerful kick sent the other player flying as he reached for the knob. Thanos cracked the door for their entry.
A glimpse of Player 251’s face showed through the doorway as she shrieked. With the knob in hand, Thanos watched as she thrashed, proved fruitless altogether. They just needed to hold it off until the counting drew down. So that the problem would be over.
Seeing the door slightly ajar, Mi-na braced her elbow against the edge for support.
A rapid, inevitable comeback occurred in minutes, despite their earlier shame. It wasn't an afterthought any longer, or a lucky swerve away. Only this time, they united.
She sensed the weight of his gaze on her as they both braced for the door. They remained there for a seemingly endless time, each second passing like an agonizing eternity.
Finally, the timer ran out.
‘Game over.’
The rattling stopped, and a strenuous choke cut the shriek short.
Thanos ran a hand through his hair, pushing the messy strands out of his face. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he looked over at Mi-na. Sleazy but captivating.
“That was… badass!” Thanos said. “You are badass, my girl,”
She let out a laugh, breathless. Thanos kept his promise, his part of the deal. It marked a beginning. Ahead of them stretched a lengthy voyage, provided that he genuinely… truly wanted to make this work. Then she will cooperate. She knew with utmost certainty now; she mattered in his fucked up world.
Choking and whining epiphany of pain and anguish canceled out, in a blur of the beautiful amaranth, was the silver-tongued devil that found his way to her.
She flung her arms around his neck, and they embraced, her vision blurring at the edges.
He startled with a sharp inhale. She could hear the squeaks of their shoes on the flooring as they stumbled back. A surprise short-lived as hesitant hands turned desperately, clawing at her tracksuit.
Every touch left her skin buzzing, large hands burning and rustling the fabric. Distant screams and sharp gunshots failed to penetrate their secluded world.
She felt the vibration of his hum against her mouth. Groans mingled with the sounds of the death as her nails dug into his skin, just enough to leave crescent moon indents. Soon traveling to gnarl his fried hair, its texture rough beneath her fingers.
Every collective experience melded into one, her soul breaching containing her body, contrasting sources. Collapsing and constructing like towers.
“You jerk,” she said between kisses. “I thought you would leave me out there.”
“You think I’d do that?” Thanos muttered against her with such fondness. “Abandon my favorite girl?”
Heat splintered her already flushed cheeks, both in anger and euphoria. Frustration and delight. Sweet, sweet complications with great fear.
“Yeah. You gave that impression.” She pulled back, glaring at him.
Thanos wiped a hand over his mouth, now glossy and red. He grinned, looking radiantly triumphant.
“I promised, remember? Wouldn’t make that mistake again,” he said. “If anyone can make it out here alone, it’s you. But I’d rather you stick with me.”
“.. not like I have a choice, do I?”
Thanos winked, then kissed her again.
