An Epiphany
you know, I've come to realize something lately. the reason why I tend to avoid my writing projects—particularly the major ones—is because I worry that my execution would not be good enough to meet the standards of my vision. see, what I excel at is coming up with lore—so much lore, in fact, that I can become lost in the details. I know, of course, that not every single aspect of a character's backstory needs to be revealed in their biography—who doesn't love some mystery, after all?—but what should be revealed and what should be left to the imagination remains tricky. the anxiety that this conundrum generates is perhaps partly why I've always favored failure because of inaction rather than failure because of ineptitude. neither may be ideal but, at least, the question of whether or not you have the skill to execute your vision well stays a mystery. this has me wondering, though...

PSA: Stay out of RP tags for a while.
For the uniformed, over the previous week there have been sock accounts that have indeed been posting shock images of irl gore of a variety of subjects in the tags. Even if that doesn't make you personally squeamish, the clear intent is to expose people to it to potentially trigger / traumatize them. The tags they're spamming with these images range from 'oc rp' to outright '(fandom) rp'. While other blogs have been informing people of these accounts to block, and thankfully tumblr staff appears to be taking the blogs down within a 24 hour timespan, the fact that as of writing this person (or a copycat) is on their third blog and probably won't stop. And if they do, it might just be for a short period of time to get people's guards down. The best way to avoid this is, for the time being, stop browsing rp tags for a while and try to stick with the dashboard. On top of that, while I imagine it is tempting to commentate on these situations, outside of telling people the new URL to block, simply try to continue to use your blog as normal. Don't feed the troll, especially when this is a blatant case of using 'shock images' to elicit a reaction out of a niche community. The 'person' will get bored or realize that their blogs will continue to get banned eventually. PS. If you're concerned that you may get stuff sent directly to you, remind yourself of tumblr's safety features and how if a non-mutual tries to send you an image, it will be blurred out. You are safe as long as you stay out of the tags and avoid the 'for you' page (I'd recommend blacklisting popular rp tags if you feel exceptionally antsy about this situation).

Hey fellas.
There's a blog named @/fucktrpc that's putting posts of dead animals in tags used for rpc. I'd recommend blocking that blog asap as they seem to be a troll blog looking to get some sick kicks.
Please feel free to reblog this to spread awareness.

idk who needs to hear this but just because your OC isn’t getting as much attention as others doesn’t mean your OC is boring/uninteresting/unappealing/not worth the attention/etc. keep making them. keep talking about them. keeping posting pictures of them. keep writing about them. the only love for them that should matter is your own.

Emotional Walls Your Character Has Built (And What Might Finally Break Them)
(How your character defends their soft core and what could shatter it) Because protection becomes prison real fast.
✶ Sarcasm as armor. (Break it with someone who laughs gently, not mockingly.) ✶ Hyper-independence. (Break it with someone who shows up even when they’re told not to.) ✶ Stoicism. (Break it with a safe space to fall apart.) ✶ Flirting to avoid intimacy. (Break it with real vulnerability they didn’t see coming.) ✶ Ghosting everyone. (Break it with someone who won’t take silence as an answer.) ✶ Lying for convenience. (Break it with someone who sees through them but stays anyway.) ✶ Avoiding touch. (Break it with accidental, gentle contact that feels like home.) ✶ Oversharing meaningless things to hide real depth. (Break it with someone who asks the second question.) ✶ Overworking. (Break it with forced stillness and the terrifying sound of their own thoughts.) ✶ Pretending not to care. (Break it with a loss they can’t fake their way through.) ✶ Avoiding mirrors. (Break it with a quiet compliment that hits too hard.) ✶ Turning every conversation into a joke. (Break it with someone who doesn’t laugh.) ✶ Being everyone’s helper. (Break it when someone asks what they need, and waits for an answer.) ✶ Constantly saying “I’m fine.” (Break it when they finally scream that they’re not.) ✶ Running. Always running. (Break it with someone who doesn’t chase, but doesn’t leave, either.) ✶ Intellectualizing every feeling. (Break it with raw, messy emotion they can’t logic away.) ✶ Trying to be the strong one. (Break it when someone sees the weight they’re carrying, and offers to help.) ✶ Hiding behind success. (Break it when they succeed and still feel empty.) ✶ Avoiding conflict at all costs. (Break it when silence causes more pain than the truth.) ✶ Focusing on everyone else’s healing but their own. (Break it when they hit emotional burnout.)

I've already said that my number one piece of writing advice is to read.
But my number two piece of advice is this: be deliberate.
Honestly this would fix so many pieces of bad writing advice. Don't forbid people from doing something, tell them to be conscious and deliberate about it. This could help stop people from falling into common mistakes without limiting their creativity. Black and white imperatives may stop a few annoying beginner habits, but ultimately they will restrict artistic expression.
Instead of "don't use epithets": "Know the effect epithets have and be deliberate about using them." Because yes, beginners often misuse them, but they can be useful when a character's name isn't known or when you want to reduce them to a particular trait they have.
Instead of "don't use 'said'" or "just use 'said'": "Be deliberate about your use of dialogue tags." Because sometimes you'll want "said" which fades into the background nicely, but sometimes you will need a more descriptive alternative to convey what a character is doing.
Instead of "don't use passive voice": "Be deliberate about when you use passive voice." Because using it when it's not needed can detract from your writing, but sometimes it can be useful to change the emphasis of a sentence or to portray a particular state of mind.
Instead of blindly following or ignorantly neglecting the rules of writing, familiarize yourself with them and their consequences so you can choose when and if breaking them would serve what you're trying to get across.
Your writing is yours. Take control of it.
It probably sounds like I'm preaching to the choir here because most of my mutuals are already great writers. But I'm hoping this will make it to the right people.

hey. hey, you. yeah. you know that prompt you're afraid to send? send it. that open starter you're really worried about answering? no worries, just answer it. i am on my knees BEGGING people to stop letting anxiety get in the way. anxiety is a silly goose. ignore the anxiety. you're not actually afraid of your mutual. they want to write with you. they want to get to know you. otherwise, you would not be mutuals.
this is officially me telling you to send that scary prompt and reply to that terrifying open starter. send the DM saying "hey i'm breaking the ice bc you're really cool and i want to get to know you and write with you". this is my challenge to you: take the leap, because that brief window of anxiety is not strong enough to stop you from making life-long friendships on this site!

things you might not want to hear, but i'm telling you.
Tumblr media
if you treat role play as a job, then naturally you are going to burn out eventually. writing on tumblr, unless you are actually an author working on earning money through commissions, should be something you want to do and not something you feel like you have to do in order to stay cool, relevant, popular, needed, interesting and so on. this is a hobby, i assume, so try not to let it become an obligation for the second it becomes a must, there's a higher risk of you losing your spark for it.
if you constantly strive to outshine, outdo and 'beat' every duplicate, every author and every designer, then you are going to burn out eventually. role play on tumblr is not a competition and it has never been despite what the vibes might have suggested, and this is so damaging in so many ways. this goes for the authors who feel the constant need to compare themselves, but also the authors who open up for competition for their muses' attention. it's not a race, it's not a battle of muses, it's not a war.
if you keep holding onto draining relations, exhausting dashboards and demanding interactions then you are going to burn out eventually. this goes without saying. the more negativity you surround yourself with, the less energy you'll have to spare. allow yourself to clean your mutuals, inboxes, threads, followers and so on. you're free to do as you please.
if you constantly stress about perfection, whether it's writing or editing or even creating in any format, and keeping up appearances as a perfect individual with a perfect portrayal, you are going to burn out eventually. we're humans, we're allowed to have bad days and we are allowed to have feelings.
and when you feel the burn out lurking, you are allowed to take a break from Tumblr. you won't be forgotten, you won't be abandoned, you won't be anything but taking a break which you should. a hobby, a website, should never affect you as negatively as tumblr role play might from time to time.
take a deep breath, loosen up your shoulders.
it's your hobby.
