Was Maul stolen as a child by Sidious or was he given to Sidious, cause there's conflicting accounts peppered all over canon.

I mean, Maul himself says that he was taken, but I'm starting to think that that might just be a lie he repeats to himself because the truth is too painful.

In that one comic, Sidious called Maul a gift from Mother Talzin (course, consider the source) and in the same comic, Talzin claimed that Maul was basically kidnapped.

Plus, Obi Wan said at one point that the Nightsisters took Maul's choices away (I noticed that Maul got pretty defensive when he said that too).

So, which is it? I'm confused.
