The chain of command is a loose structure that organizes and directs the actions of the 2nd battalion. The most common level of the chain to offer commands are Captains ordering their Hands in day to day operations, while the Ranger trainees will receive their orders from the Ranger-Captains they train under. It is a rare occurrence for the battalion to receive orders from the Ranger-Lord, as they mostly keep to protecting the borders of Quel’Thalas, but such commands are not unheard of.

Rank Structure

The Ranger-Lord acts as the direct command of the battalion, serving on the War Council of Quel’Thalas and answering directly to the Ranger-General. While stationed in Quel’Thalas it is uncommon for the battalion to cross paths with the Ranger-Lord, unless a special situation calls for it; however, when deployed outside of Quel’Thalas the members of the battalion will find the Ranger-Lord on the front lines in active command of the force. The Ranger-Lord is present for all ceremonies, speaking directly to new recruits upon their official recognition as full Farstriders. The Ranger-Lord also serves as a councilor to the Ebonhawk Squadron, casting a vote to its use in missions.

Ranger-Captains serve as commanders to platoons, which consist of no more than three hands, and direct training for all Ranger trainees of the Farstrider battalion. Each Ranger-Captain is personally chosen by the Ranger-Lord, recognizes as a master of a particular skill set that the Ranger-Lord feels is necessary for every Farstrider in the battalion to understand. A Ranger-Captain will appear in the field more often than the Ranger-Lord, directly communicating with their platoons and participating in more crucial missions to border defense. A Ranger-Captain may be given responsibility for a specific location that is deemed critical to the defense of Quel’Thalas as well.

Captains are the leaders of the five-man squadrons called hands, designated protect certain zones along the borders of Quel’Thalas. They actively work with the members of their hand, remaining together with them in stationed areas during all active periods. Beyond taking part in missions and leading the hand, Captains write reports and attend the rare majority meetings of the battalion to be educated on matters important to the Farstriders as a whole. Captains are chosen for tactical ability and leadership skill, able to make critical decisions in moments of high tension.

Lieutenants are the seconds in command within the hands, assisting Captains in duties that need be done and assuming temporary command of the group in times needed. Lieutenants are chosen based on survival skill and medical ability, entrusted with the duty of tending to wounds of injured hand members or evacuating them to safety in dire emergencies.

Farstriders serve as the bulk of the battalion, encompassing three-fifths of every hand, and acting as the base rank for all operations in the force. Farstriders organize themselves into teams of five, called hands, and form close bonds with the members of these hands. They endeavor to complete any mission and protect the borders of Quel’Thalas to best of their abilities, by following the orders of their Captain.
