something that fascinates me is how while standards of beauty (in the US at least, as that's what i'm familiar with) seem to have mostly stagnated, the expectations of maintenance keep getting higher and higher.
you can't fake smooth legs with stockings anymore, you have to shave your hair off completely. you can't fake a conventionally attractive figure with bustles and stays anymore, you have to get cosmetic surgery. you can't fake a smooth, ageless face with makeup anymore, you have to have a 25-step skincare routine. everything changes but it all stays the same.

pretty awesome how being a "progressive" in america like just does not necessitate giving a fuck about human life. average american progressive would vote to ritually sacrifice the entire population of a global south country in exchange for like, a 5% rent hike cap in their city. and then they would brag about it on bluesky
