The longer I think about brotherhood vs 2003 the more I feel brotherhood missed the mark but I feel like that is an opinion that will get you executed by firing squad on here.

Something that I’m struggling to put into words but I love how 03 tarnishes the “moral purity” of its protagonists. Like in Mangahood, you have your nonviolent protagonist. Edward doesn’t want to kill anyone. His quest would be a lot easier at points if he did kill people. He stays true to his morals and ultimately is rewarded by the narrative with basically everything he could want (except his alchemy.) Classic protagonist arc, we may now pat him on the back for being a Good Person.

Vs 03 in which Edward doesn’t want to hurt or kill people, but the world he’s playing in is a cruel one. The dream he’s chasing is one that requires violence. Greed dirties his hands first—forcing Ed to kill him to prepare him for what’s coming. With his own hands he must kill what’s left of his mother. He becomes a killer gradually and by the end he doesn’t even hesitate to fire a gun at people. Ed tries to stay a Good Person, but really at a certain point keeping your own hands clean is a matter of vanity: you are still complicit in all sorts of violence, you simply have the privilege of distancing yourself from it. Edward is not our perfect would never hurt anyone protagonist. By the end he cares more about achieving his goals than avoiding doing harm to others. But I feel this version of Ed is uniquely empathetic—aware of the impact his actions (and inactions) have in a way Mangahood Ed could never hope to achieve.

Mangahood feels comforting: you can have your cake and eat it too if you just work really hard you can always preserve your morals AND get everything you want. 03 is a more bleak approach but in a way that feels more grounded in reality. Sometimes to get what you want you will hurt people and you will hurt yourself and the people you love will scream at you and you will hate yourself but that is what refusing to let go is. The themes of hope and love and connection stand out stronger against this bleak backdrop where a happy ending is not an inevitable guarantee. There is a rawness to the characters absent from the clean cut protagonists of Mangahood.

(Don’t even get me started on how Mangahood Al is basically Jesus incarnate and aside from that one mini arc he’s never done anything in his life that wasn’t perfect and kind. Where’s his rage??? Where’s his trauma??? Where’s his WRATH????)
