STATUS - AS OF JULY 2025
This year has been good for movies, and even the ones that have not been great have brought people to theatres, had decent press runs, and a lot of social media engagement. The originality and the acting are present in these movies as well. I just want to see a few new faces in front of and behind the screens too. But other than that, I am close to being really impressed with this year's cinema rollouts.

Times for interesting movies
I always like to see movies far from holidays and awards season because they provide a good view of where movies are today. What is the creative space for film all about right now?
Times to watch for - March, May, and August / September are important movie culture temperature months.

Everyday, we see fewer filmmakers who make films because they love movies, being allowed to create the work they desire to. Christina Ricci made an excellent point in an interview she recently did with IndieWire, that there should be more executives who love movies in the industry.

Stories that get adapted into movies deriving from Twilight typically depict couples that have no business being together like Fifty Shades.
However, when you watch the Twilight Franchise... Bella and Edward are kind, well-suited to each other, and actually very loving towards one another.
So I have no clue where that element is coming from ???

Historical and Geographic Adventure Movies
Studios have gone away from making the historical adventure movies that were so incredibly popular in the early late '90s and 2000s.
Those movies were fun to watch and to make, exposed people to historical/geographical concepts, and added diversity to viewership options.
The concepts in Geographic/Historical adventure movies also encourage people to look at graphs, charts, maps, and to read up on the eras.
Historical/Geographic movies were so solid that they did not have to be marvels of film-making, because they were creative and dynamic in nature.
There has been an increase in action movies catered to families in 2024, so hopefully adventure movies will get a push in 2025-2026.

"No, I'm Giving Away Your Dream"
I've noticed that these kinds of speeches can be unique to theatrical and cinematic art. The works of art depicting a child letting go of their parent's ideals to embrace their desires and wants specifically using the arts is so inspiring, because anyone who wants to work in film knows that most parents do not see the arts as a profitable or sustainable profession. It's a perfect example of art imitates life and vice versa. Watching these speeches in all kinds of movies and plays just feels like a full circle moment because sometimes the writer behind the scene had to make the speech themselves and made this for someone else who couldn't.

Fashion and Media
I recently saw a video online where a young woman voiced what she said was her hot take that fashion that restricts women's movement is not a good direction for the medium. Not only do I agree, but it got me thinking about how it's becoming less common to see bedwear, pajamas, slips, and comfortable garments on actors in movies and television. Even the style types of comfortable wear like athleisure is deemed ugly or inappropriate. Clothing should be fashionable/stylish and comfortable with confidence and without consequence or ridicule.

The State of Cable
Would love to talk about the state of cable television... but I think even if you are dedicated to watching cable T.V. that it's so oversaturated with specials, game shows or reality shows (not that there's anything wrong with any of those), that I cannot remember too many of the shows on cable besides the popular standouts or established shows with constant ads and support from the industry like Abbott Elementary or shows that are so immediately disliked that they have one season and go away quietly. And after that, you're left with shows you cannot get attached to because it may get cancelled or take about 3 years for a second season to release.

Ways to know you’re watching a musical:
Tumblr media
Firstly, Musicals can be great. Being tricked into a movie that didn't tell you it was a musical can be a bit annoying.
I like musicals, I am pro-musicals but I’m also anti-deception.
Musicals have any combination of actors that can sing and singers that can act like Keegan Michael Key.
an original show or an unoriginal movie concept- if something says it’s a reimagining
If you are watching the trailer and it looks choreographed like if you see choreographed dancing at all - there will be singing to follow you are watching a musical
if it came from Broadway- safe to assume it’s a musical
if the cast is mostly child actors
if you see a music note anywhere in that trailer
if it’s based on like a Wattpad story- your safe nobody (usually) wants to hear y/n sing.
this one is a toughie, but if the actors all look really wide eyed - musical actors have a look to them
if the movie looks really colorful like whimsical looking...there might be singing
if you recognize a dancer in the trailer
if the lighting looks overdramatic
if it’s about theatre or acting or singing
if it’s a biopic about an actor or a singer
