Forensics: Blood Spatter Analysis
Blood is often present at crime scenes where homicidal violence has taken place and because of it’s high environmental resilience and difficulty to totally destroy, is a valuable clue in helping investigators reconstruct a crime and the movements of the victim and offender. Blood spatter patterns fall under three main types:
Passive blood stains (pictured top) are drops, pools, and flows of blood that result from gravity acting on a still surface. Their shape is clearly defined.
Transfer blood stains (pictured middle) are smudges, swipes, smears, and prints left behind after a bloodstained surface comes in contact with another surface.
Impact blood stains (pictured bottom) result from droplets of blood traveling through the air and striking a surface, causing a characteristic “comet” stain. The “tail” of the comet indicates the angle and direction from where the droplet traveled.
