severus is a perfect example of trauma and how it affects someone.

seeing people continue to bash him really irritates me at times because they don’t understand that he is the way he is because of his trauma.

he was abused by his father, constantly bullied at school, sexually assaulted. he has this defence mechanism that builds these walls around him (not literally) which prevents people from getting close.

you can say whatever you want about him, but if you cannot understand that it is his trauma that makes him the way he is - don’t say anything at all.

I adore looking at pre-movie Snape art because it was drawn during the time where his defining character trait was "asshole who hates children" but now that we have the context of the whole series it's like - what do you mean THIS guy had abusive parents and grew up heavily impoverished.
