Ah. The world of fanfiction. It’s a beautiful thing. It’s one where you can bring Nami’s dead mother back to life and have her marry Curly Dadan of all people while their daughter is the one who hangs out with the pirate with the red hair and scar and eats a stretchy fruit and wears a straw hat and wants to become king of the pirates whilst having debaucherous shenanigans with her equally debaucherous crewmates. Gooooooood stuff.

The fanfic is called Pieceless by the way. Rated E for debauchery if that wasn’t clear. Still check it out. Numbers going up makes me go ooga booga.

I keep forgettin to post this so here it is! The Return's cover! Lots of dramatic green lighting for a pretty dramatic chapter, one of my favorites in old UF actually. What can I say? I really like how I used it as a chance to focus on some characters we don't typically focus on, in the midst of a super serious situation like a literal alien invasion. I hope to have as much fun rewriting it as I did when I wrote it the first time around ^_^

I am thinking about Usonami.

They're that pair who immediately click into being besties and continue to bond over gestures to the rest of the crew and the monster trio in particular. Usopp is so often One Of The Girls he's doing face masks and mani-pedis with Nami late at night and Nami learns how to help him with his hair and they are Constantly gossiping and talking shit about everybody all the time.

Usopp is the only guy on the crew who can call Nami out when she's the one being crazy or scold her for being blinded by greed without her punching the shit out of him for daring to talk to her like that.

Before Arlong Park when it was just her and Luffy and Zoro Nami was very conscious of being the only girl out at sea with two teenage boys who were significantly physically stronger than her, and while that obviously wasn't like The Reason she kept her distance from them it was a Factor, and if they had gotten the Merry and started sleeping on the same ship without Usopp also joining Nami would have felt that little bit of anxiety for a while. Usopp having spent so much time being scolded for being too familiar with Kaya has gotten used to being Very conscious of the way his actions might reflect poorly on a girl he's friends with, so the first time Luffy thoughtlessly barges into Nami's room for something it's Usopp who grabs him by the back of the vest and yells at him to have some manners. After Sanji joins and the first leg of their journey is such an absolute sausage fest, having Usopp around becomes a godsend for Nami's sanity.

They play their extremely stupid game of reverse chicken where they're both constantly hiding behind the other whenever trouble shows up and bickering about it like children, which is only partially cowardice and is significantly more about trust. Nami can throw tornadoes and shit at people, Usopp does not feel any shame at all in letting her fight his battles for him. Usopp can outshoot gunmen with a slingshot and he has killer monster plants, Nami thinks he should snipe all of their enemies and she should never have to fight ever again, actually.

Usopp is a dumb horny teenage boy with functioning eyeballs so obviously he knows Nami is hot, but while a lot of other men get fucking creepy about it, she's never made to feel uncomfortable around Usopp -- sure, she catches him looking, but at least he's got enough manners to be subtle about it. I also still crack up remembering Thriller Bark when Nami screamed and Usopp slammed into the bathroom to help her only to get a look at her full-frontal nude and his reaction was to drop into a very genuine bow and thank her so, so sincerely. Peak dumbass teenager energy to thank the pretty girl for letting you see her naked.

I think it's so funny if Usopp is accidentally the one friend-zoning Nami post-ts. Like, pre-ts they were on that Designated Besties treadmill where neither of them were really even able to think about romance stuff because of how insane their lives were, and if they had Moments after a near-death experience when Nami would tuck into Usopp's side and he'd wrap his arms around her and they'd just take a minute to breathe together, or late at night when Usopp would press his forehead against her shoulder and confess his insecurities and uncertainty about his place on this crew while she played with his hair -- well. Then the next day they'd be back to fighting Warlords or whatever the fuck. And also like, they're bro's y'know? Best friends. At an island they break off from the rest of the group to do some shopping and step into a coffee shop to get something to drink and Usopp thoughtlessly pulls out Nami's chair for her and slides her his cup of whatever so she can taste it and somebody walking by pauses by their table and is "like I just wanted to tell you you're such a cute couple" and they're left laughing awkwardly like ahaha no she's like my sister/he's like my brother but then they can't look each other in the eye for a little bit.

But then post-ts Usopp comes back ripped and the thing about those two years apart is that before the training arc they had like, a tolerance to each other? They saw each other every day, stupid puppy crushes were manageable when they couldn't be ignored. Hell, everybody in the east blue crew has had a crush on everybody else at some point in their journey. It happens. It's no big deal! But after two years apart meeting up again after their respective glow-ups and seeing how much more settled and sure of themselves they've each gotten has both of them sweatinggggg however their actual dynamic is so familiar and well-worn that it just. Does not ever occur to Usopp to even try for something else. Yeah yeah, Nami's smoking hot, water is wet, what do you want from him.

Nami, however, is Having A Time. Why is he hot???? Why is he hot. It's very rude of him to have gotten hot. It's not so bad when he's wearing goofy hats and being stupid with Luffy on the lawn but occasionally they'll be in a situation where Usopp physically shields her with his body or steps up to have her back in the way he always does when she really needs him to and Nami will be like m. my. your. face. can I sit on--

Anyway it takes a while for them to finally get together and when they do it is so so so stupid because it wasn't even like a confession it was probably someone else who needed to point it out and then Usopp is yelling at Nami like YOU LIKE ME???? WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?!?!

and Nami is screaming back all sharp-toothed furious like she gets I FIGURED YOU KNEW!!!

and Usopp screams back WHY WOULD I HAVE KNOOOOOWN?!?!?!?!??! HOW COULD I KNOW!! IF YOU DIDN'T TELL ME!!!!!!

and Nami is like WHY DOES IT MATTER ANYWAY I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO TELL YOU WHAT I'M THINKING ALL THE TIME

and Usopp goes WELL MAYBE IF I'D KNOWN YOU LIKED ME I WOULD HAVE ASKED YOU OUT ALREADY

and Nami goes OH SO IT'S MY FAULT WE'RE NOT DATING?!?!

and Usopp goes WE'LL IT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT MY FAULT BECAUSE I!!! DIDN'T!!! KNOW!!! and then they bicker off into the sunset

They keep arguing all the way to dinner and barely pause for breath while Usopp is again taking Nami's coat and pulling out her chair for her -- brief interlude so that Usopp can order them drinks without even having to ask what Nami wants and she can haggle the price down to nothing -- and it's not until the appetizers come and they've both been shouting over each other about absolutely nothing for fifteen minutes that Nami goes quiet and her shoulders start to shake and Usopp Immediately deflates panicking a little he thought they were just arguing for fun did he cross a line is she actually upset and then Nami tilts her head back and she's laughing flushed pink tears in her eyes laughing too hard to breathe and Usopp melts into the table and looks at her all starry-eyed and calls her a jerk for making him worried.

When her laughter finally dies down Usopp slides his hand across the table to rest just next to hers, pinkies brushing but not quite daring to actually take it, and he asks her so nervously and bravely voice soft not quite looking at her if. If she wants to be his girlfriend?

And Nami is the one to tangle their fingers together and call him stupid and say that that would make her really, really happy. Then she smirks at him and informs him that boyfriends get charged an additional one hundred percent interest rate, and fines for every missed holiday, and not to even mention the break-up fees--

Usopp is like waIT WAIT YOU CAN'T CHARGE ME FOR THINGS I MISSED BEFORE WE EVEN STARTED DATING NAMI and she's like you'll be in debt to me for the rest of your life 😇 guess that means you'll just have to stay with me forever then 😇 😇 😇 and Usopp kind of afraid with a sweat drop on his cheek is like wh. What have I gotten myself into.
