“No,” Naoki agreed. “You didn't really seem the type to be parading around in front of crowds.” That smile was a welcomed sign, and he had to fight back the urge to push it farther. This was a dance of careful steps, and this partner, unlike so many, was wavering, uncertain that it belonged on the dance floor at all. He had to be careful. If he pushed ahead to fast, he'd scare him off. “Competitions? What is it that you do?" Always a welcomed sign that his prey didn't know how to say no.
“Not on a stage, in that sort of limelight.” Shane couldn’t help but laugh at that sentiment since thinking on it now--his job involved exactly that. A hand came up unconsciously to rub the back of his head as he thought up the proper way to respond. “Well, I--before I came here, I mean. I still am. I just took a break from it for a while, but I’m a surfer by profession.” In that way, he’d done his fair share of parading, but out of at sea and much farther from view. “It’s the one thing I know I can do.”

The demon in him was fixated on Shane, and when those eyes finally met his, it was received with what was almost a purr of satisfaction. Naoki's expression barely changed though; he was long practised in this little game. “I really do think that I'm a lucky bastard.” His tone was still soft, smile beatific, but the hidden meaning to those words were Hell's creation. Absently, he turned the menu over in his hands. “I was surprised to learn of your participation. You don't really seem the type.”
Wide green blinked back in surprise, but Shane took no notice of the ill intent behind the words or the soft smile he was offered. The shifter felt flustered more by the surety behind the statement. There were expectations behind the comment, despite the reassurance seemingly interlaced in it. He neither had the confidence nor the wit to meet something as foreign as those. Still, he desperately wanted to try for once, despite all his doubtful thoughts. “It’s not really something I’d usually do. No.” Shane smiled once more, brighter this time around. “I mean...I do have a fan or two from competitions though, so the nice women running it were very determined. It didn’t seem right to turn them away.” He had always been bad at it anyway.

“I told you that whoever won you would be a lucky bastard,” Naoki murmured, voice soft against the background ambiance of the restaurant. With mild interest he scanned the wines listed on the menu, his attention diverted in fleeting glances at Shane. After a minute, he gave up his attempt. The demon had its sights set on prey, and after the incident with Fern it was hungrier than ever. He gave an antique lopsided smile that belonged nowhere near a monster. “I hope you don't mind that it was me?”
Shane was meanwhile pulling at his collar nervously and glancing at everything but his date, taking in the atmosphere as it were. He wasn’t used to this and it really hadn’t occurred to him the semantics of it all. Blinking up at the demon bashfully, the shifter attempted a smile that seemed just slightly deflated. “Oh, no. Of course not.  I’m glad that you think so, I just...” Pausing, the surfer swallowed. ...hope it wasn’t just out of pity.
“I’ve never really done this sort of thing before.”  That was certainly the truth and Shane was sure his inexperience was showing.

"Oh, okay. If you ever need it, though, don't hesitate to call me." Chiara smiled, placing gloved hands into her pockets. "When you finish, do you want to hang out? We can go get froyo. They have discounts if you have enough stamps on one of their promotional cards. I only need one more to get half-off on a purchase."
Blinking wide green, Shane nodded slowly. He had not been expecting such an invite, but was happy to take it for once. "If it isn't too much trouble for you, I could...," the shifter trailed off glancing in the direction of the not-quite-his house just a little ways away. "If you don't mind if I stop by my place to grab some clean clothes." He doubted she would appreciate having to deal with him and his less than attractive work out gear too.

"Ah, okay." Chiara nodded. "I don't think you will, Shane. You're working hard, so I don't see how you could fall behind. Do you need anyone to time you or anything? I'd like to help, if I can." If he accepted her offer, though, he'd have to explain what training for surf season entailed. The siren managed to keep up with certain aspects of an ever-changing world rather well, but she didn't know much about the kind of work that surfers put in before competitions took place.
Flushing slightly, Shane smiled and rubbed his nose bashfully. "Thank you, though it's really easy to let things slip.' He shrugged, blinking slowly. "Oh, you really don't have to go out of your way for me. I'm not doing anything too serious yet." The shifter pursed his lips. "I was just about to finish for the day, just thought I'd get in a few laps around for now. I just have to pace it till I can actually get out there with the weather as it is."
