Can Our Pet Babies Get COVID?

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a great deal of awareness when it comes to health and protection. As humans, we are very susceptible to acquiring and becoming affected by this virus.
But can our pet babies get COVID?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2 can affect dogs and felines. A small number of pets worldwide -including cats and dogs- have been reported to have been infected by the virus that causes COVID-19. All of the cases have been reported to be of human-animal transmission.
As pet parents, we need to make sure that our family is protected -including our pet babies.
The good news is, there is no observed case of an animal-animal or animal-human transmission for COVID. However, out pet babies can still be carriers of other types of viruses, fungi, or bacteria inside the house that can affect the rest of the members of our hooman family.
Here are some known viruses, fungi and bacteria that our pet babies can bring with them. Rabies is not included in the list, even though it's a virus, because the only way to deal with rabies is through vaccination. We'll have another article for that soon.
Cat Scratch Disease

Ever got scratched by a cat and it got all swollen and itchy? Then all of a sudden you get headaches, fever, tiredness and swollen lymph nodes? You might have Cat Scratch Disease. This is caused when your cat baby bites or scratches you and is infected with the Bartonella henselae bacteria. The good news is, it normally goes away after a week or two. But if the infection is severe, you might need antibiotics to help deal with it.
Ringworm
Ringworms, also called tinea, is a common and highly contagious skin and scalp disorder caused by fungi that lives in warm, moist areas of the body. As the name suggest, ringworms are distinct because of its characteristic ring-like rash, which can be terribly itchy. Cats, especially stay and unkempt, are usually carriers of this fungi. But dogs can also pass this infection to humans, as well. It can also be transmitted by touching infected surfaces. Good news is, it's preventable and treatable - for both you and your pet baby.
Noroviruses

Norovirus is the leading cause of gastroenteritis, or what most people call as "stomach flu", which can quite unpleasant to deal with as symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramping. According to a study done by University of Helinski’s Department of Food Hygiene and Environmental Health, there is evidence to show that our pet babies, particularly dogs, can pass the norovirus to the people within the household.
Salmonella

Another food related illness most of us are quite familiar with is Salmonella. It can cause an upset stomach, diarrhea, fever, and pain and cramping in your belly. Most people relate salmonella to food poisoning. Most can recover in about 4-7 days. But in severe cases, it might lead to hospitalization. Though dogs and cat are not affected by the bacteria, they can become carriers of it. So disinfection is of the utmost importance.
Healthy pet babies make healthy families.

Having our pets protected also ensures the safety of the hooman within our families. The only way to ensure your family's safety is to keep your pets FUNGI, VIRUS and BACTERIA-FREE.
How do you do that?
Wash Your Hands

Pet parents, washing your hands during these times do not only protect you from COVID but also your pets as well. Bacteria can be present when you are handling pet food or treats. When cleaning your cat's litter box, bacteria or virus may be present as well. And when you pet your babies, salmonella might be there. We can't emphasize the importance of this: HANDWASHING SAVES LIVES!
Vaccinate Your Pet Babies

Certain pet vaccines (like the 5-in-1) are created to deal with viruses and bacteria that can reside inside our pet babies' bodies. Some of the viruses and bacteria mentioned can be transferred to us without knowing because lives inside them. Having your pet babies vaccinated will not only improve their health but deal with this harmful organisms once and for all.
Use Products That Kills Viruses Effectively

By sanitizing, you are creating an extra barrier of protection aside from handwashing. You can never be too clean, especially with the threat of COVID lingering around. This is protect all members of our family - even our pet babies. Use products that not only disinfects but also kills viruses effectively. Check the labels and ingredients. Safely Treat Pets With Mange Naturally
Protecting and maintaining our pet babies' health is a top priority for us pet parents. That's why it's important that we do what we can in order to prevent things like mange from happening to our pets.
This article will talk about how you can treat and manage safely and naturally.
What is Mange?
Mange is skin condition caused by mites. Mites are tiny, microscopic parasites that live in and under your pet's skin. In Filipino, the best way to translate this would be "surot". It's itchy. You can't see them and some are highly contagious.
Hoomans can also have mange and it's in the form of "scabies" or "galis". Now we understand where the term "galis-aso" came from. It's because commonly, mange comes from pets, mostly on our doggos.
But mange is not only found on dogs. Our cat babies can also be susceptible to mange. The symptoms are common for both pets, with a minor difference for cats:
Uncontrollable itching
Restlessness
Patchy hair loss
Red bumps or swelling in affected areas
Scaling in affected areas
Excessive grooming and licking (for cats)
Here are some of the common forms of mange that can affect our pet babies.
Sarcoptic Mange - This type of mange is commonly caused by sarcoptic mites (also called as scabies). This can be transferred from other animals or from contaminated beddings. Cats who like going outside on a consistent basis are most susceptible to these mites. When the mites are active, they will produce red bumps and swelling and will be incredibly itchy.
Demodectic Mange - These mites usually reside on your pet's skin and follicles. These are a milder form of mange, but equally irritating. Demodectic Mange is not contagious. But if the mites' number get out of control, that's the time it can compromise your pet baby's immune system and start causing problems.
Otodectic Mange - More common in cats, these are mites that are usually found in your pet baby's ear and causes inflammation and itching. You would notice a lot of ear scratching and head bumping from your cat babies when they are infected by these parasite.
As you can see mange doesn't only cause hurt for our pet babies, it's also deeply uncomfortable for them. And, it can also transfer to us pet parents.
So how do we treat mange in the safest, most natural way possible? Here are some products you can use.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
You can create an apple cider vinegar solution to help cure your pet baby's mange. Just mix ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with ½ cup of Borax and warm water. Make sure that the Borax is dissolved well before applying on your pet's fur. Make sure it's not lick by your pets since Borax ingestion can be harmful for them. Apply the bath to your pet's entire body, let it dry and towel off.
2. Olive Oil
Olive oil can help moisturize and soothe your pet baby's scaly patches and dry skin due to mange. Just generously apply olive oil directly on the affected areas.
3. Honey
Honey has long been known as a cure for many ailments not only for pets but also for hoomans. It's an antiseptic and antioxidant and will help heal your pet's sores. Honey also has cleansing properties and will help clean the skin off bacteria, dirt and grime from mange. Just directly apply honey to your pet baby's sore spots.
4. Madre De Cacao (Kakawate)
Since it's discovery, Madre de Cacao has been known as a miracle when it comes to pet care. It's a natural parasiticide (meaning it kills parasites, fleas, ticks and mange) and it's non-toxic to pets. So you can you use it liberally and generously without adverse effects. Plus, it has been known to make our pet baby's fur smooth and soft. Just boil the Madre de Cacao's leaves and bathe your pets with the solution. But the good news is, there are many products out there infused with Madre Cacao leaves and oils so you don't have to go through the agony of boiling them.
But as the saying goes, "prevention is better than cure". The best way to deal with mange is to invest in pet baby's well-being and make sure that their environment is clean and that you use products that are not only curative but preventive as well.
----
One of those products is Sniff by Purple Paw. Everything they have -- from shampoo, soap and cologne -- is made from REAL Madre de Cacao leaves. It doesn't only help cure mange but also prevents it. Plus, since it's infused with lavender oils, it helps calm your pets and gives them that irresistible scent. To get your today, click HERE.

Why Get a Cat Condo For Your Babies?
What is a top priority that you need to check off the list for your cat babies? It’s getting them a cat condo.
What is a cat condo? Also called cat tree, cat tree house, kitty house, cat stand or cat tower (among other names), a cat condo is an artificial structure where your cat babies can exercise, play, sleep and relax. It’s the single most important furniture that you need to invest on if you plan on making your cat babies part of your family.
What many cat parents fail to realize is that cat condos are very essential for the well-being of their cat babies, especially if they plan of keeping them indoors.
Here are some of the benefits that comes with purchasing a cat condo for your cat babies.
Keeps Them Exercised
As with hoomans, exercise is a very important part of your cat baby’s lifestyle. It helps maintain their weight and releases all that bottled up energy that makes them go cat-crazy. When you get them a cat condo, your cat babies will be able to get that much needed exercise while staying indoors… which is much safer for them. They can practice their hunting skills, pouncing and just be the little ball of energies that they are within the safety of your homes.
Keeps Them Entertained
Indoor cats are very prone to being bored. Pretty soon, you’ll see your cat babies jumping on your appliances and scratching off your precious furniture just to find something to do. Getting them a cat condo can provide them that much needed distraction. It will also give them that space where they can play freely without creating a mess out of your home.
Keeps Them Mentally Healthy
Our cat babies are also subject to anxiety and depression. Some signs include lack of appetite, excessive grooming, hiding and erratic sleeping patterns. As cat parents, we also have to prioritize their mental wellness. When you give them a cat condo, this will provide them that much needed “safe place” and make them feel happy even if they’re indoors.
Keeps Them Private
Cats are known to be creatures who like to keep to themselves. They love to have a lot of "me time". They like to perch on high, safe places just to observe people. Or maybe to get a quiet place where they can hang out and sleep. A cat condo that’s appropriate for cat’s size can give them that personal space that they’re looking for.
There is so much more to getting a cat condo than just being a mere furniture addition to your homes. It’s providing a space for your cat to grow to a healthy baby that you want them to be.

Is Your Dog Baby Snoring?🐕
Most pet parents have this idyllic idea of sleeping next to their dogs. Even though this is a sweet thing to do for your dog babies, IT'S NOT FOR EVERYONE. Some dogs will hog fight you for the blanket. And yes, snoring is a thing for dogs.
Dogs snore? Yes, some do.
Now, this may become a cause for concern for pet parents, especially it's indicative of a health problem for us hoomans. So the question is, is it the same for our dog babies?
While it's perfectly normal for dogs to snore, it turns out that you do have the right to be a tad bit concerned.
Why is our dog baby snoring? Here are some contributing factors.
BREED
Some breeds are predisposed to snoring. If you are a Shih-Tzu, Bulldog or a Pug owner, you might observe some snore action happening during their downtime. Why? Because these breeds are brachycephalic -- meaning they have broad short skull with a short snout. So if you are a pet parent of these breeds, chances are, your baby is a snorer.
BREATHING
Snoring normally occurs when the passage of air becomes constricted or blocked, just like humans. So when your dog babies lie on their back when they sleep, their tongues might get in the way of their breathing --- hence the snore.
Dog babies that are also allergic or have asthma may be prone to snoring as well, since both conditions tend to affect their airway passage.
The good news is, while snoring may be common to our dog babies, sleep apnea isn't. In fact, it's extremely rare. But snoring may be a sign that your baby is suffering from hyperthyroidism. But again no need to worry. It's curable with a little bit of meds and TLC.
EXCESS WEIGHT
Small dogs, like the Pomeranian, weigh an average of 9 pounds. If this dog baby begins to weigh in 17 pounds they it can have an adverse effect on your its breathing.
WHEN DOES YOUR DOG BABY'S SNORING BECOME A CAUSE FOR CONCERN?
The key is observation. If your dog baby is a serial snorer that suddenly stops without any apparent reason, that's a cause for concern. The opposite is also true.
But if your dog baby only snores at night after a long day of active play, then rest assured that you are taking care of healthy, happy dog baby.

How To Potty Train Your Kitty
So, you have a new cat baby.🐱
As a cat parent, one of the first things you need to teach your kitty is how to do potty. The good news is, most cats are already litter trained by the cat moms, so when they come to their new homes they adapt easily. And most of the time, it wouldn't be too hard for you to litter train your new cat babies because they do have a strong instinct of "covering their tracks".
But that doesn't mean that they don't need guidance. Here are some tips for your cat parents in order to help your cat babies to do potty.
SECURE THE SUPPLIES
Make sure that you have everything you need to help your cat babies learn the appropriate bathroom habits.
Cat Litter Boxes - The recommended ratio of cat little box to cat baby is usually 2:1 when you're just starting to litter train them. Make sure that the the litter box is place somewhere where you cat baby feels safe and private. If they feel exposed, most likely they wouldn't feel secured enough to do their business.
Cat Litter - When you look at different supply stores, you would soon likely find out that there's a wide range of options to choose from when it comes to cat litter. There's sand, clay, wood pellets and tofu among others. There's clumping and non-clumping. Some have deoderizing ingredients, some don't. So which is for your cat baby? The answer lies with the cat. So if you feel that you don't know which one to use, you can experiment with what's available until you find out which variety your cat prefers. Some cats easily adapt to different types of litter, some don't. At the end of the day, choose the types whose texture and feel agree with your cat baby the most.
Using Treats and Toys - There are certain kitties that will need a little bit more of a motivation to develop a habit. This is where treats and toys come handy. Once your cat baby does his business on the box, offer a treat or a piece of dry cat food afterwards to reward his good behavior. Positive reinforcement will help your cat to remember this habit. Eventually, you'll need to wean your cat baby off.
HOW TO POTTY TRAIN YOUR KITTY
Show Where The Box Is - You can lead them by scent using cat treats. You can carry them off to where the box is and allow them to smell and examine it. Make sure the box stays in its designated places so your kitty doesn't get confused.
Lead Them To The Right Place - If you observe your cat baby is about to go, you can carry them to the litter box so that they can make the association. There are times that you would need to wait for them to do their business at the start. But once they make the association, they'll know where they need to go.
Establish A Reward System - Don't forget to give rewards to your cat baby after pottying. They'll appreciate you for it AND it'll solidify the positive association.
Avoid Scolding Your Cat Baby - There are times during the initial stages of potty training that you're cat baby will miss the mark. Don't scold or punish them. Be patient. Go back to the first three steps of potty training. Talk to your cats. Through time and love, your cats will eventually learn where where the toilet is.
VERY IMPORTANT: CLEAN THE BOX!
One thing you need to take note of is that cats have the tendency to avoid doing potty on litter boxes that are dirty or smell. So make sure that you clean and maintain your cat baby's litter box. You can do so every two weeks or if you see the need to do it. Clean your cat's litter box with soap and water. And don't forget to change the litter.
Training your kitty to do potty can be a chore, but it's sure is rewarding.

Are wood pellets safe as cat litter?

Wood pellets are slowly becoming a trend when it comes to cat litter.
What are wood pellets?
Wood pellets are made from compressed wood fibers. Most commercial cat litters today are made from sand or clay. And compared to these, wooden pellets are larger in size. Many cat parents consider wood pellets as a viable alternative to conventional cat litters.
But the main question cat parents, like you, are asking: ARE WOOD PELLETS SAFE?
Let's take a look.

There are a lot of advantages when using wood pellet litters.
First, they are considered to be eco-friendly since it's 100% biodegradable. Wood pellets are made from natural source materials which makes them cost-effective too.
Wood pellets are also organic since it's made from natural wood fibers. In the US, these are mostly made from cedar pine. But there are a lot of other wood fibers that can used as alternatives. Locally, some manufacturer use saw dust for their wood pellets. As such, wood pellets are perfect for cat parents who are onboard the organic movement bandwagon.
Additionally, wood pellets are hypoallergenic --- both for the cat parent and the cat! Since wood pellets are dust-free and large in size, it can be sure not to irritate your lungs and that of you cat baby.
If you want to prevent urinary tract infection (UTI) - which is common among cats - from developing, wooden pellets is the best way to go. Clumping cat litters like sand or clay has the possibility of sticking to your cat's urinary tract. Since wooden pellets are non-clumping, it wouldn't stick.
And if you're worry about cleanup and disposal, wood pellets proves to be quite the charmer. When these baby become damp, moist or soaked in liquid, they disintegrate into powder. You can then safely flush them down the toilet. Or better yet, the natural ingredients that come with the pellets combined with the urea from your cat's pee makes the perfect fertilizer! So you can go ahead and use the disintegrated pellets as plant food.
Wood pellet cat litters can also be used as perfect plant food!
So, are wood cat pellets safe? From all the evidence we have, YES - for the you, your cat baby and your plants!
And here's the good news, you can avail Shapets All Natural Wooden Cat Pellets from our official Facebook Store. To order yours, click on the HERE.
