When the word ‘selfie’ became an actual word, my grandpa had me explain to him what it meant. When I finished, he found this picture and asked “is this a selfie?” I told him it was and he simply said “I was taking selfies before it was cool.” So here’s my grandpa taking a selfie in his Coast Guard uniform. (Circa 1959) Can we make my grandpa internet famous? I’d love to explain to him what Tumblr is. ;P

A random pet peeve

"Here's a photo of some weird/random thing, your argument is invalid" what argument??? What are you arguing about that a guy threatening a big snake with a cucumber settles the debate? And why are those photos posted on their own when no one is even having an argument in the first place?

At least 17 friends or co-workers got laid off today and just reading the thread about Barnes and Noble in Twitter made me cry. I’ve been out of the company for almost a year and the 18 years I was there was filled with ups and downs but it’s heartbreaking to see people who were the store’s best resources get unceremoniously fired without a word of warning. And it’s like, it doesn’t affect me personally, I shouldn’t take it so hard, but my heart physically aches for everyone all over the country who went to work today and found out they weren’t going to have a job anymore

I love Barnes & Noble, and though I'm lucky enough to live somewhere with multiple bookstores, not many people are. Should I (and people with this option more broadly) continue buying books from them? Is it best not to so as to not support the way they're handling the business? Does it make any difference at all?

That’s the real trick, isn’t it? B&N corporate office just backhanded their employees, are digging in on a disastrous business model, and are all around behaving like robber barons, but they’re still the only thing that holds Amazon back. (Much respect for indies, but they just don’t have the bulk purchasing power to influence the market.)

The fact is, yeah, it probably doesn’t make much of a difference. If you continue to shop at B&N, you buy a few months for the remaining employees to get their resumes together and run. You also give publishing houses a little extra breathing room to reassess… you know, everything.

On the other hand, the money you’re spending really only goes to the CEO’s golden parachute. It won’t change the end result.

I don’t know. I really don’t. There’s no good answers here.

I PROMISE not to blog too much about Barnes and Noble, but there’s a piece to it that I don’t know if people are thinking about.

If BN goes out of business, which it absolutely will at this point, Amazon has a near monopoly on the US book market. (Yes, other stores will still sell books, but they don’t compete in the same way)

So, going back to when BN was the corporate baddie putting indy stores out of business, they had lower prices than they do now. The member savings were bigger, discounts went deeper, all to get business. And then you know what happened? Once they didn’t have to compete, prices rose.

What do you think will happen to Amazon’s book prices when they have no major US competitor?

Now, the most likely course if that they’ll eventually sell most books at list price, and that’s not a terrible thing. (I am not the sort that thinks list price is too high, except in the case of certain hard covers when they’re shoddily made.) But what we should be concerned about is if there’s one large corporate buyer of books, they could influence list price in the long run. 

My point is, Amazon will not likely continue taking a loss on books once BN is out of the way, and one way or another, the market is going to change to reflect that.

Barnes & Noble Laid Off Hundreds of Employees

I have never had a strong social media presence, or actively used tumblr. However, I’m hoping that as many people as possible find out what B&N has done. On Monday, February 12th full time receiving managers, digital leads, and head cashiers were told they were laid off with no prior warning. Many great people lost their jobs because of corporate greed and stupidity. Great customer service was the only thing that set B&N apart from online shopping, and now that is gone. For the part time employees left behind, they will have to do double the work with low morale, knowing this company does not care about its employees and knowing there is very little room to move up in the store.

Do not become upset with the store managers, employees or local stores, but show Barnes & Noble how much they screwed up with your dollars and your voices on social media.

I will miss my coworkers, and I will miss loving a company that I work for.
