Chretien de Troyes (twelfth century) Erec et Enide, verses 1583-1617
He who received the order bore the mantle and the tunic, which was lined with white ermine as far as the sleeves; at the cuffs and neck, so that nothing might be concealed there were over a hundred marks in beaten gold with stones of the greatest power, violet and green, turquoise and amber, set all over the golden surface… There was an ounce of gold in the buckles; on the one side there was a hyacinth, and on the other a ruby that glowed with greater radiance than a carbuncle. The lining was of white ermine, the finest and most beautiful you could see. The purple robe was cunningly worked with little crosses in various colours, violet and vermilion and turquoise, white and green, violet and yellow.
