Greetings Friends! Soooo this is an unfinished sketch of my first attempt at Cheetara in my style. I like it....good start...but not the direction I wanted to go in the end. This felt kinda comicbook-y and I was feeling more classic Sheeba fantasy portraiture. Then I thought....what would Cheetara look like if she was chillin in my universe 🤔. Greetings Friends! A mentor once told me to stop drawing so many self portraits and start challenging myself to draw different faces. Since I took that bit of advice, I’ve become fascinated with the infinite expression of the portrait and the Black portrait. More ppl started expressing to me that they saw themselves in the work. It then became my mission to represent the spectrum of our experience and image for anyone/everyone watching. I’ve been able to connect with so many women this way and it’s truly amazing! That time I met actress Erika Alexander at The Black Comix Expo (Founder: Deirdre Hollman! She attended a super dope panel I participated in on Women in Afrofuturism. I remember the theater was PACKED to capacity. After the discussion with the amazing Ashley Woods & Melanie M. Goodreaux-Fielder was over and ppl were filing out, Erika approached the stage to talk to us about how she enjoyed the panel and we traded info. I was ECSTATIC....so much so I’m sure I did not keep my cool. 😂 I mean...Living Single’s Maxine Shaw Attorney at Law (my favorite character from my absolute fav show in the 90’s) was interested in my work!! Cousin Pam from Cosby Show y’all!! I swear my 14 y.o. self was doing backflips!! I had just watched her in Get Out randomly on DVD close to that time too and my mom was binging Living Single on Hulu at the time. So to see her in the flesh just chopping it up with me like we do this all the time was surreal. It’s not even so much that I was star struck (which I was) but I was so grateful to meet the actress that had brown skin and slim physique and braids like me being so sharp and funny and highly confident and with a high profile career on tv (which I was aching to be like as a teen). I just thought she was such beautiful example for brown skin girls and those braids were what every girl in my school wanted for their official hairstyle! #iconic!
