For the flautist anon trying out for all-state, I've played two solos from a book of pieces used for the Paris Conservatory. I'm no all-state level (and they were somewhat difficult for me) so these may interest you. It's a book called 'Flute music by French composers', edited by Louis Moyse and published by G Schirmer. Hope this helps or gives you an idea on what to look for!

Do you have any intermediate flute solos for a high schooler trying out for All-State?
Hi! We don't have a whole lot for flute at the moment, just the Mozart concerto. I did scan a Debussy flute solo (Syrinx) a little while ago, if you'd like that. I'm not too sure what the difficulty level is. If you'd like it, just send another ask and let us know!

This piece, the last that Fauré wrote, focuses a lot of shifting colors and moods rather than melodies. This piece only gets better the more you know it, as you get to learn all the complex harmonies and passings of melody from one instrument to another. This version is from IMSLP so there are clean copies available there! (Also take note that I accidentally scanned Violin II first and then Violin I. Whoops)

In the process of running this blog and looking for sheet music for my own purposes, I’ve amassed a pretty big collection of sources for sheet music, and I thought I’d share them with you all. i know I’m forgetting a ton of sites but oh well
* - free # - subscription $ - buy individual songs
• (*) my blog - cello music + the occasional orchestra arrangement • (*/# optional) musescore - user created sheet music for any instrument or combination of instruments. there are some really amazing compositions and arrangements that I’ve found on here (this is also the notation software I use because it’s really nice and it’s free. you can also buy a pro account on here but that’s really for posting because it’ll only let you post five scores without a pro account) • (*/# optional) scribd - not primarily for sheet music, but there’s a ton on here anyway (note: technically it requires a subscription, which does cost money, but it also gives you a free download for everything you upload so just upload random pdfs if you don’t wanna pay) • (*) chromatik - official, legal sheet music for a ton of instruments that’s completely free. you can’t download, but you can just screenshot it if you need to save it • (*/# optional) 8notes - lots of instruments, but not a huge selection of music, especially non-classical. no download without subscription but you can screenshot • (*) imslp - free, legal archive of classical music. if you want classical music, this is the place to go. they have recordings, arrangements, conductor’s scores, individual parts, everything. • ($) musicnotes - pretty much everything is on here. there isn’t a ton of classical music though • ($) sheetmusicplus - even larger selection than musicnotes, also has more classical music • ($) jwpepper - every music teacher i’ve ever known uses this site. if you need to buy a book of sheet music or an piece for an orchestra, choir, or band, this is the place to go. • (# with free trial) sheetmusicarchive - classical music • ($) amazon - i mean, it’s amazon. what can’t you get on amazon. • (*) ifthesepianosheetswerestates - not active anymore, but there’s a ton of sheet music for piano here • (*) duke university’s online archives - classical string quartets, historic american music • (*) master post of twenty one pilots piano music • (*) noteflight - very similar to musescore, but they don’t have as many scores • (*) jellynote - mostly guitar tabs but there’s also a fair bit of sheet music. like musescore and noteflight, it’s all user created. • ($) thepianoguys - buy sheet music for the piano guys (it’s kinda expensive tho)
music notation software
• finale - most professional composers use either finale or sibelius. however, they’re both pretty expensive (although finale is much more expensive - $600 compared to $120) so i don’t really recommend them that much • sibelius • musescore - what i personally use. all or almost all the capabilities of finale or sibelius, but it’s free. • noteflight
other random music related resources:
• midomi - can’t remember the name of a song? sing or hum part of it and this site will find it • shazam - similar to midomi onchord - finds songs in the same key, that contain the same chords, or use the same progressions • chordify - tells you the chord patterns of any song using youtube (this one doesn’t usually work for me but i think it’s because i’m using a school computer) • teoria - practice music theory (THIS SITE SAVED MY LIFE WHILE TAKING AP MUSIC THEORY. IT IS THE REASON I GOT A FIVE. USE IT. GET YOUR TEACHER TO SET UP OFFICIAL ACCOUNTS.) • ap music theory masterpost • thenostalgiamachine - enter a year and listen to popular music from that year • complete lists of artists’ music: ed sheeran lana del rey the 1975 charli xcx • sites that you enter an artist/song/genre and it suggests things musicroamer liveplasma tastekid • all the music you’ve ever reblogged • retroj.am - put in your date of birth and it’ll give you a specific playlist for every year you were in school • tunefind - find any song that played in an episode of a tv show • infinite jukebox
if any links are broken, please send me a message and let me know! i’ll probably update this periodically because i know i’ve forgotten sheet music sites, and if you have any you’re welcome to add them.

Would you guys happen to have anything for trombone?
Hey, anon! We don’t have anything right now, but I do have a few friends who play trombone. I can try and ask them for music and post it within the week.
In the meantime, please check IMSLP for music you might be interested in.

Do you have anything for bass? Just something interesting that i can use to keep my playing up to speed. Thanks!
Hey! We don’t have anything specifically marked for bass (feel free to donate a submission!) but I know a lot of bassists who play the Bach cello suites on bass! I imagine it’s pretty challenging, but a good challenge nonetheless.Bach - Six Suites for Cello

Hi do you have the violin part to Dvorak's Slavonic Dance no. 2?
Hey there! Right now, there isn't any score to the Slavonic dances in our database but you can check here on IMSLP and if you click on "Arragements and Transcriptions" tab you can find the violin score :)

Hello! Do you have any recommendations for advanced tuba solos?
Hey! I'm a violinist so I don't know too much about low brass rep, but I did a quick Google search and found these links:http://www.tubapeter.com/index_files/videos_tubasolos.htmhttp://www.uni.edu/drfun/articles/Tuba_Lit_List.htmlhttps://flmusiced.org/flmusicapps/Sessions/Handouts/2013/SuggestedSolosforTuba_Euphonium(SymbiosisDuohandout).pdfAlso, I would really just recommend looking at advanced rep from other bass clef instruments (cello, bassoon, etc). They might present some unique challenges you wouldn't find in tuba music, and also are sometimes more soloistic than low brass material. So maybe one of the Bach cello suites would be a good thing to try (minus the chords, of course).

Partita for Solo Violin No. 2, d minor, Movement V. - Chaconne (Ciaccona) This piece is the cornerstone of the violin repertoire. Arguably one of the most famous and beautiful pieces of music ever written, this challenging piece employs a repeating harmonic progression by using many different variations in the melody.

Hayy, you got any fun pieces to practice sightreading? - thankful violinist
Hey! I actually just answered this a few posts ago. I recommended Telemann and LeClair, but keep in mind you can go to IMSLP and pick any piece to sightread through and it’s good practice. Becoming a good sightreader is all about variety, doing it all the time, and trying not to stop.

Do you by chance have any vocal literature? Specifically Finzi's A Young Man's Exhortations? I know this is an orchestra blog, but no harm in asking I figured. Thanks! -EA
Hi! Right now we don’t have any vocal rep, sadly... I can work on that, though! Definitely would be a good thing to have.

Do you have any suggestions for something fun to play for violin if you've just finished Beethoven Romance in F? Thnx for the blog btw it literally saved my life multiple times 👏👌❤🙏👽
Hey! I’m SO glad the blog has helped you. That makes it all worthwhile!
As for some sightreading, I’d suggest these duets by Telemann, I love reading through them. They’re canonic, so the ‘harmony’ part is actually the same as the melody, just displaced by however long indicated. They’re just easy enough to sightread through, but tricky enough to throw some curveballs. They’re originally for flute, but they totally work for violin.

Also, if you go to the library’s page, you can find the LeClair duets, which are a little more challenging and just as fun (I like reading through both parts for extra reading practice).
