What people see in Santos as arrogance and ego so clearly isn’t that or at least isn’t just that. They don’t understand how abuse (and especially neglect) can result in a level of hyper-independence that is maladaptive but also not actually inaccurate in terms of projected self-efficacy.
It’s not that Santos thinks just so highly of herself. It’s that she’s used to 100% relying on her own competence and capability to navigate any and all situations. She doesn’t naturally understand how to acknowledge a higher authority bc there was never a reason for her to value authority in her life, starting from childhood. She literally can’t, deep down, fully comprehend/internalize why she’s supposed to rely on their expertise or support. Like that fundamental belief is just not in her brain.
Which is why her going to Robby about Langdon is such a big deal and actually a sign of positive growth. But so many people just think she’s a bitch for snitching.

I think Santos’ thing about acting overly familiar and being kind of hard on people rlly is a. her not understanding normal social boundaries, which is p normal for an abuse survivor and b. she thinks she’s showing she’s unarmed. By which I mean, she’s used to navigating social situations in a constant state of conflict. She’s used to always having to fight for herself. She’s gotten good at reading people, at picking up on details about them she can use later to keep herself safe.
I think what she’s doing with Whitaker and Javadi in particular is she’s picking up on those sensitive details, and then she’s openly inserting them into the conversation, but in a lighthearted way, and she thinks that by doing this she’s showing that she isn’t a threat. She’s saying hey, see, I’m safe. I can’t use this stuff against you because I’m already making it not a big deal, I’m showing you my hand. And I’m joking about this stuff you might not like about yourself but I’m doing it casually, because I want you to know I see whatever it is you’re embarrassed or ashamed about and I still like you anyways. And she really doesn’t get how any of that is weird or dysfunctional.

s a n t o s & w h i t a k e r a s r o o m m a t e s. - whitaker gets ready extremely quietly. he tiptoes around the apartment, lifts and sets things slowly not to make the smallest sound. it takes him 15 minutes to close the front door so it doesn't click loudly. - santos is actually very smart with money. she makes most of her meals herself and does food prep for the full week. - whitaker tries to be nice and says he'll watch any movie that santos picks even when her options sound terrible. but then he ends up loving them. - whitaker is very paranoid about losing the apartment key. - there is no negotiating about not having their weekly tv show watching night. they couldn't initially decide on a show and used an online fortune wheel that decided for them. - santos bought whitaker a new duvet because he didn't have one. - when he moved in, whitaker didn't have much money for food and used to take leftover cheese sandwiches from the hospital and for a long time santos assumed he was a vegetarian and whenever they ordered food, santos picked vegetarian places. - it didn't take long for whitaker to make friends with all of their neighbours and he now feeds their next door neighbours fish when they're away. - whitaker got santos into country music.

okay but javadi and mckay are so important. mckay is exactly what dr. shamsi doesn’t want javadi to be, but she’s also the woman the javadi finds comfort in during her shift. javadi gets more confident because she’s being watched over by mckay.
like imagine her actually babysitting harrison. the only hard rule is that harrison can’t do anything stupid enough to end up in the hospital but other than that, “there’s a 20 on the counter for a pizza, knock yourselves out.” in comparison to victoria’s mom not even trusting her enough to watch her cousins at family gatherings.
mckay trusts in victoria’s intelligence and it’s that trust that allows her to teach and guide her. i want them to have a cute sisterly relationship

on my posting era so last post tonight about why Mel and Frank are perceived as being romantic despite all the media's (scoff) disbelief and why can't a woman and man be friends doesn't really work for them: BECAUSE Langdon already has female friends and his dynamic with them are soooo different from what he shares with Mel.
they repeatedly point out how langdon is not someone who's, while quite likable, soft and gentle. he banters with garcia, collins and dana. he's wildly gleeful and snarky over every single conversation, even while treating patients. he's serious and distant with trinity, and hostile with her later on. he shows kindness to whittaker when his patient dies, but doesn't go out of his way to engage with him. with everyone else in the show, frank langdon is shown to be a bit of an asshole and abrasive without softening his edges.
EXCEPT MEL.
like the change isn't immediate. he doesn't automatically go soft on her, but when he sees that she's not engaging with him the way he's comfortable with and also that she's quite different, he changes his approach. he praises her in ways he doesn't praise anyone. he seeks her out for patient care. he constantly asks her if she's okay. it's a direct contrast to the man frank langdon is portrayed to be and he's so vocal about his preference that there's no room for misinterpretation. add to this the constant running theme of langdon being a neglectful husband and the patients reflecting his life, you can see that what mel and frank share is an instant connection.
and then people will come and cry about "why can't a man and woman be friends?"

Okay. So. Walk with me.
It's the fourth of July shift, Frank's first day back, and it's immediately HELL.
He tries to keep his head above water, but he constantly feels like drowning. He can't afford to have a panic attack. It's case after case after drug test after drug test.
His work routine is slower now, always having to track down a fellow resident and or attending to sign off on his medication requests, and that's a hell of its own kind.
And Frank endures it all. He endures the whispers. The lingering glances. The judgmental stares, the way Robby barely even looks at him. And maybe. Maybe this was a mistake, maybe he shouldn't have come back and
"YOU'RE HERE!" A voice, excited, greets him and there she is, like an oasis in desert, Dr. Melissa King. He always thought he's forever lost her trust, but she's smiling at him, and for the first time that day, he finds himself smiling back.
And, against all odds, Mel sticks by him, stands up for him, and maybe. Maybe Frank found in her a harbor he can ride the storm in. She is strong, dependable, and takes no bullshit, and Frank is grateful for her. She signs off on any medication requests he has for patients without asking what they are for, the implicit trust THERE, never wavering.
So, Frank slogs through. And at the end of the shift, he finds himself falling into step with Mel. Mel, with her noise cancelling headphones on because she loves watching the fireworks, but she hates the noise. Frank gets her.
They are standing on the steps of the hospital when the fireworks start, and Frank watches the colorful display for a second before he finds himself turning his head to watch Mel.
And Mel, beautiful and wonderful Mel, is watching the fireworks, colors dancing across her face, a huge smile on her face. Frank feels his breath arrest, in awe, and he can't look away from her. He eventually does, but it takes so much effort to turn back to the fireworks.
What he doesn't see is Mel turning to look at him, smile soft around the edges, in awe at him, at this man who managed to turn his life around, who never gave up the fight, who clawed his way out of rock bottom. The fight is not over, but Mel vows to be with him every step of the way.
She reaches for his hand, and Frank's breath is punched out of him. They lace their fingers together, and time starts once again.
He can do this, he finally thinks to himself. This wasn't a mistake. He's right back where he needs to be.
He anchors down. He's home.

I want, I need Mel to have an "I can fix him" moment with Langdon. I need Robby or someone to tell her she can't save him, and her to insist he can be saved. That he can and will change and get better and he just needs to figure out that he has a problem. I need her to say, with all the emotion her little voice can fit in it, "I won't give up on him" while unbeknownst to her, Langdon is right outside the door. I need

A reason I think I've latched onto Kingdon and the idea of Mel and Langdon together so fast and hard is because they managed to take an already excellent trope of grumpy/sunshine and turn it into something better: brick wall vs open book.
Langdon is honest about nothing in his life. His whole persona is a way to shield himself from everyone around him by being a cynical, sardonic asshole. He doesn't want to have anyone see that he's sensitive, that the ER broke him and he's hiding something. He's also good at it. So good that no one around him realizes that something's off and it takes a day one intern to realize that something's fishy about him.
Enter Mel. Mel who can't tell when someone's joking. Who can't hide it when she's excited or sad or frustrated. She wears her heart on her sleeve and every emotion on her face, and suddenly Langdon can't wear his mask around her.
It's so telling to me that the person in the ER that Langdon is the most earnest with, the most kind to is Mel. He tries to joke with her, sure, but he goes out of his way to be sincere with her whenever he has the chance. When he actually confessed that he learned something from her with Terrance, I was blown away because I guarantee he's never admitted that out loud to any other resident or attending physician in his career.
But he has to admit it to Mel because that's the only way she's going to know. Mel is forcing him to lower his defenses, to be kind and complimentary, and I am eating up every second of it.
