I think it would be really interesting to explore the 2011 Glyndebourne and 2017 Bayreuth stagings of Meistersinger as Watsonian and Doylist responses (respectively) to the viciousness of the opera's aesthetic programme. I don't think I've done enough reading to approach the text yet and I don't particularly like Wagner's music as a whole. But I do like dramaturgy and I promised I would be open-minded in case I found music I did like. So here we are.

Allegory of Vanitas
Artist: Antonio de Pereda y Salgado (Spanish, 1611-1678)
Date: ca. 1634
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, Austria
Description
A winged genius embodies "vanitas," the reminder of the transience of all earthly things. Before him, objects are arranged in Baroque still-life style, suggesting the rapid passage of time, the futility of power, and the fleeting nature of life's pleasures. The tabletop bears the inscription "nil omne" (everything is futile). References to the House of Habsburg, such as the portrait cameo of Charles V in the genius's left hand, suggest a court commission.

“In reading some of Goethe’s sayings, so worshipped by his votaries, I came across this, “Live in the all.” That is to say, your separate identity is but a wretched one, – good; but get out of yourself, spread and expand yourself, and bring to yourself the tinglings of life that are felt in the flowers and the woods, that are felt in the planets Saturn and Venus, and the Fixed Stars. What nonsense! Here is a fellow with a raging toothache. “My dear boy,” Goethe says to him, “you are sorely afflicted with that tooth; but you must live in the all, and then you will be happy!” As with all great genius, there is an immense deal of flummery in Goethe, and in proportion to my own contact with him, a monstrous deal of it in me. […] N.B. This “all” feeling, though, there is some truth in. You must often have felt it, lying on the grass on a warm summer’s day. Your legs seem to send out shoots into the earth. Your hair feels like leaves upon your head. This is the all feeling. But what plays the mischief with the truth is that men will insist upon the universal application of a temporary feeling or opinion.”
Hermann Melville

Did anyone ever like attempt to document and compile the variations of Barney the dinosaur murder ballads across the elementary school system in the early 2000s. Like legit it has always fascinated me as a phenomena and I would love to know if there were like traceable regional variations or what.

1 August 2025 marks the 164th anniversary of the commissioning of HMS Warrior into Royal Navy service in 1861. HMS Warrior was a ground-breaking warship in the Royal Navy, marking a significant shift in naval architecture and military capability. When commissioned she was one of the world’s most heavily armoured warships and also one of the largest ever constructed. Her innovative design sparked a naval arms race spurring other nations to develop their own ironclad fleets. Despite her initial advantages, rapid advancements in naval technology soon rendered HMS Warrior outmoded. She was decommissioned in 1883, 22 years after entering service.

🐋 Edinburgh journal of natural history and of the physical sciences. Edinburgh [etc.]: Published for the proprietor [etc.], 1835-1840. Original source Image description: Historical illustration from the Edinburgh Journal of Natural History (1835-1840) depicting five cetaceans: a common porpoise and a caing whale at the top, a white whale and a narwhal labeled as sea unicorn in the middle, and a large true whale at the bottom. The beluga (white whale) is shown with a rounded head and smooth white body. The scene includes detailed rocky shorelines, sailing ships, and small rowboats in the background, providing a naturalistic maritime habitat context. The drawing highlights the physical characteristics and relative sizes of each species within the whale tribe.
