Adictox - Cuban punks break through to Canada
Tumblr media
It’s been nearly two years to the day that Cuban punk rockers Adictox first played Edmonton’s Up + Downtown Festival with DOA at Brixx. Anybody present at the show that night will know it was sweaty, wild and passionate like most punk shows. But what set this one apart were the invisible struggles leading up to the band’s first appearance on Canadian soil. Dealing with visas and other diplomatically challenging situations became prevalent for the band, whose positive attitudes in part paved their way into the Canadian underground punk scene. Thankfully, with the emergence of Drew McIntosh’s The Grizzlar Coffee & Records in Edmonton, bands like Adictox will be able to get their music out to the world. In 2012, Jesse Gander of Rain City Recorders flew down to Trinidad, Cuba to record the album, 2, which will now be the first recording out of Cuba to be pressed to vinyl. I recently caught up with Ricardo Espinosa Manzo (or Yoyo), guitarist for Adictox to chat about the bands struggles with international touring and being a punk band in Cuba in general.
BR: After everything the band has been through regarding visas, etc. How amazing is it to finally be in Canada playing these shows? Any highlights so far?
RM: It’s always a big deal and a big goal to travel to another country being Cuban. We finally made it here two years ago, which was pretty hard to do. Our visas were denied four times, taking documents to the embassy was a challenge and it was the first time doing the process, so we were very nervous. After the first ‘no’ there was a lot of disappointment. But finally we made it.. Now it’s easier because we have a history in the Canadian embassy and seem like trustworthy people to them.
The band feels like it’s having it’s best moment. Like having an opportunity to prove ourselves in an English speaking country playing in festivals, having a huge tour that no band in Cuba has done before (at least rock and roll, including punk rock into that). It's hard to say which moment is better than another but for sure we are so happy about how the public respond to our shows. That's something that make us feel so committed to this...  One of the most important things we have here are friends we met and made throughout our tours that are amazing people. Soooo far away from the idea that the Cuban government put in the Cubans minds like people in other countries don’t want to talk to you, help you or they never care what happens to you. We’ve found people so kind and made very good friends. We love Canada and their people. We hope we can do this again, keep meeting people, playing for them and having a good time all the time.
BR: At home in Cuba it seems you and your band are an important part of the punk scene. What is the punk scene like in Cuba from your perspective?
RM: It’s hard to keep a band that cannot get paid or have almost no support from the media. When you are working so hard for seven years, at the end people there recognize your commitment within the scene and we are blessed with that. A lot of friends that always support us in whatever we need. Cuban punk scene is very small in the middle of the country and maybe in Havana, but is a lot of people helping each other, supporting bands and trying with what they have to make shows and go to support festivals in other cities. Almost always by themselves (no government support) but it works.
BR: The album you recorded in 2012 is the first Cuban recording to be pressed into vinyl form. What does it feel like to be part of this history?
RM: It’s very important to us to have this opportunity; seems like it's common that people hear music on vinyl and is awesome we can bring them our music in shows and on records. We are so glad to have it and for sure gonna be a lot of recognition in Cuba as well. We are so thankful for this opportunity.
BR: Since you've been involved with the Canadian music scene, how have you observed this connection benefit musicians at home in Cuba?
RM: There's a lot. In Cuba when a Canadian or any other country’s band goes and plays there, people pay attention to what they are doing, getting ideas and being influenced. So I think that is very important to keep this connection and this interchange between cultures and our scenes to get everyone on the right track to do this. People in Cuba are always waiting for bands to come play in Cuba and hope this going better and better throughout the years.
BR: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
RM: In general we are so glad to have this opportunity. To show the world that in Cuba are people that makes, feels and have a lot of passion for punk rock. They want to make strong relationships based in help and friendship. Hope it's going step by step to the total exchange between our countries. And for sure thank you for the space to say something so important for us.
Adictox is on tour through Western Canada with Guadalajara’s Canibales. See them in Edmonton at 9910 on September 30th and October 4th in Calgary at Ship & Anchor. Check out their Facebook pages for more tour info.

The Courtneys swing by Edmonton on North American tour with a new album
Tumblr media
Although our spotty phone conversation began with a loss of cell service and awkward silence, Jen Twynn Payne, drummer & vocalist of the Courtneys kept it peppy and professional. But professional in a strictly light, DIY fashion. I didn’t count how many times the word, “fun” came up in our chat, but I would guess a shade over 20.
Despite lengthy tours and a second, well received LP, II, under their belts, the Vancouver trio can’t stress how important it is to maintain a sense of ease and joy in everything they do.
Their tour kick off was this week in Vancouver and we spoke during their drive to Calgary, which will ultimately begin a month long adventure ending in Los Angeles April 15th. When asked if there’s ever a point during a tour where it stops being fun, Payne quickly replied, “no, not really. This is a winter tour, so maybe in a sense because it’s a little cold, but never in the past.”
Payne went on to explain their positive, constructive attitude while touring, explaining, “we really try to do other stuff during the tour. For the most part we’re driving and playing shows, but we try to see stuff we wanna see in other cities. I don’t think a lot of people schedule time to do stuff like go to the Korean spa. I think a lot of bands party a lot more than we do. We don’t really drink a lot. We play and then go to bed. We’re pretty on top of mental health and physical health while we’re on the road.”
Their new record, II, doesn’t stray too far musically from their first LP, The Courtneys, which is a great thing when you consider how much time they spend in the recording process (four years between albums). After only three listens to the album, it’s pretty easy to sing along to as well as tried and tested for dancing around your apartment while vacuuming.
“Tour” and “Silver Velvet” stood out as the most catchy, but the whole damn thing was so easy to love within the first listen. Even the moments of darkness are whole heartedly honest and feel inspiring in some way; to befriend the dark, lonely parts of yourself and continue conquering the world from that emboldened place.
Payne acknowledged how they continued to write these songs the same way they always have, perhaps only changing the number of songs they put on the record.
“We didn’t really know what to expect. But, so far it’s been amazing. I’ve been liking reading reviews of it and it feels good to just have it out. It was a natural, organic growth where we all progressed as musicians. Nothing was forced.”
The Courtneys healthy approach to their art make them a fascinating group to watch evolve and continue to gain the respect they deserve. They also deserve space in their van for this tour, so please buy a record or two at their show at Brixx this Friday, March 17th.
While they’d love to get rid of merch to make said space in their van, they know how to roll with the punches and make the most of their time together on tour.
As Payne put it, “if you don’t have expectations, you can’t be disappointed and it’s easier to have fun.”
Check these gals out at Brixx below the Starlite Room Friday, March 17th with Gender Poutine and Faith Healer. $15 at the door plus your budget for some shiny new merch.

Tommy Grimes’ fetishized debut
Tumblr media
Since Tommy Grimes began performing as a solo act a few months ago, anyone who’s witnessed the spectacle that is his live show wouldn’t believe it if I described him as shy.
Also contradictory to that sentiment are the two music videos released ahead of the album’s official release. “Night Sweats” includes sensual industrial floor cleaning, a pseudo lap dance and Grimes’ backup dancers Moira Mackinnon and Brandi Strauss, aptly called “the Night Sweats.” The more recent “King of the Jungle” features a silly, sexually charged scene including a gorilla suit and one very lucky banana.
“The banana scene was Robert’s idea,” Grimes giggled. “I thought it was a little crazy and maybe it wouldn’t be in the final cut. But Robert liked it and left it in. I talked to my mom on the phone the other day and asked if she had seen the new video. Thankfully she said ‘no’ and I told her not to watch it. I didn’t want her to see it.”
Prior to his foray into this project, Grimes was the vocalist for the now defunct, The Strap. There was a special, wild quality to those live performances and thankfully he’s maintained that vivaciousness in his new work. Although he challenged himself to write lyrics differently for “King of the Jungle,” he still drew inspiration for his vocals from a few of his favourite bands Blondie and the B-52’s.
Grimes accidentally created the silly, danceable 80’s inspired album after receiving a few gentle nudges from friend and producer Robert Burkosky, who also directed the aforementioned music videos. This album will be the first release through Burkosky’s new label, Beechmount Records, named after a cemetery he used to live close to.
“At first I thought it was a joke! He suggested making the album together and I laughed at first, but then we just did it and it was a lot of fun,” he explained. “I wanted this album to have a sense of humour and I think that comes across.”
Tommy Grimes and the Night Sweats add to the darkly whimsical musical aesthetic by co-ordinating their outfits within the music videos and during live performances. The trio have been known to create their own clothing, including the leopard print loincloth garment featured on Grimes’ album cover.
“For the album release I’m going to do a costume change. I don’t know how we’re gunna do it yet, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve,” he grinned.
Check this show out tonight at 9910 with Calgarian new wave aliens, Melted Mirror with a special appearance by Nag.
An easy $10 at the door.

The Dropouts hit Bohemia before pausing for summer
One of Edmonton’s newest power pop punk bands, the Dropouts are one playful group of dudes, and it shows in their music. Formerly part of the blow up doll enthused, Pale Blue Dot, members Brett Nestman, Kevin Kusiak and Dustin Rogers have joined forces with Roger’s brother, Dylan to create a more grown up version of their previous project.
Maintaining the silliness of early 90′s pop punk, but with a slightly more mature edge, the Dropouts aren’t necessarily attached to maintaining that sound as they prepare to spend the summer writing, according to Dylan.
Since their days in Pale Blue Dot, guitarist/vocalist, Brett Nestman, says they’ve grown a lot as musicians.
“I feel like we’ve slowed down a lot. We’re taking our time to write songs and compose more,” he explains. “It’s like anything. The more you do something, the better you get at it. Dustin and I have been playing together for years and we added Dylan and Kevin and it’s working. We’re not really trying to run away from punk rock, but we’re just trying to grow and make interesting songs.”
In between swigs of beer, the band was eager to talk about everything from critiquing each other’s performances at their first few shows to how much fun they have together as a group, in general.
Drummer Dustin chimed in about the band’s tight knit friendship, “The thing about us being friends,” as the group corrected, “best” friends, he continued, “the thing about being BEST friends is that you can adjust during the writing process. We can say things like, ‘that’s a shitty riff,’ or whatever the case may be.”
If pop punk is your thing, and you’re into awkwardly endearing stage banter while the band tunes up between songs, go see the Dropouts Friday, April 22nd at Bohemia. They’ll be joined on stage with Dead Honey and No Room for Subtlety.
 Doors at 8pm and it’s a cool $10.
Thanks to the Dropouts for sharing their time for this extremely fun interview, the ensuing chaos at the Druid’s Bingo Tunes and for getting the tab.

BC/DC with Damage Inc. // Thrillhouse // The Devil’s Sons

$20 advance. Doors at 8pm
If you missed the real thing last fall in the freezing rain, this is your chance to at least pretend you were there. Almost two decades into their career, they’re still paying homage to one of Australia’s best known exports. With Damage Inc. contributing Metallica vibes, this show is full of cock rock nostalgia. Local support Thrillhouse and The Devil’s Sons should sufficiently warm up the crowd in the only rowdy way they know how.

Jill Polluck Music/Art Show
with Cayley Thomas + Billie Zizi
Bohemia
$10. Doors at 8. Festivities at 9pm
The first time I saw Jill perform was at the Wunderbar and I can recall laughing almost the entire time. Plus, she’ll be peddling her wares in the form of majestic collages, including prints! She’ll be joined by similarly majestic angels Cayley Thomas and Billie Zizi, so it’s really just a gorgeous evening of talented song birds. Go to this!

Counterfeit Jeans
with Versions // Thick Lines // Street League
the Almanac
$10. Doors at 9pm.
Hot on the heels of a brand new single release this week. Counterfeit Jeans are ready to tear up a new stage. Without hiding behind any flair or false pizzazz, the three piece show up with honest dedication to their music and always have fun doing it. They’re joined by local garage favourites, Versions, who are gearing up to release their new material at the beginning of April. Thick Lines, one of Ben Disaster’s newest creations, will be playing their first show here, and if their demo is any indication of their live performance, we’re in for a treat. Street League are noisy and reminiscent of early Black Flag. Basically a dream line up.

This Week in #yegmusic
Although Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, this upcoming week of shows has a particular punk rock flair. Not to be biased, but it’s the best kind of flair.
Not only are there a bunch of sweet punk shows, but the Garneau Theatre is showing Stanley Kubrick’s take on the Clockwork Orange. Romance is indeed in the air (in the form of ultra-violence).
Monday, February 8th
Living with Lions // Youth Decay // Dangercat // Fire Next Time
The Buckingham.
$10 at the door. Doors at 8pm.
The beer drinking version of last night’s all ages, dry event. Look forward to it being loud and full of the best people in the city. I’ll be in a corner writing new moon intentions under punk rock soundscapes.
https://www.facebook.com/events/941509865925609/
Tuesday, February 9th
Propaghandi with Slates + Strangled
Starlite Room
SOLD OUT
If you snoozed on getting tickets for this show, you may be outta luck. It sold out almost as quickly as it was announced and for good reason. They’ve been around since 1986, making it feel somewhat cool to grow up on the prairies and not listening to country music.
https://www.facebook.com/events/738266182972341/
Wednesday, February 10th
Stepmother with OJ Pimpson
The Black Dog Freehouse
FREE. Doors at 8pm
The recent inclusion of the underdog as a viable venue on Whyte Ave has certainly spiced things up. Wednesday nights have suddenly become very cool as a result. Stepmothers have been playing around the city a bit more recently, but if for some reason you’ve missed it, this show is friggin free, so there are zero excuses. They are fun raucous, garage and worth supporting. OJ Pimpson are grimy, funky and sexy. A match made in heaven!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1666987926908423/
Trivium with Order of Chaos and All Else Fails
Starlite Room
$28 advance at Blackbyrd and/or concertworks.ca
If you need something a bit heavier, more technical and dramatic, this may be your spot on Wednesday! Headbanging is oftentimes the best medicine, especially coming up toward Valentine’s Day. Metal is the most sexy. Go shake it with your favourite long hair.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1657844034499977/
Friday, February 12th

Sweety Pie Records Presents:
The Betrayers // The Archaics // Power Buddies
9910
$10. Doors at 9pm
In a fun twist of events, the order of bands will be determined by a draw. A wonderful trick to get you to stay for the entire show, I’m sure. The Archaics have been playing a lot of Calgary shows as of late, and so this is a grew time to catch them as they gear up for the release of some new material later this year!

Sweaty Palms in partnership with Eating Disorder Support Network of Alberta presents:

Sunday, February 14th
Valentine’s Day Brunch
the Buckingham
11am
My personal favourite brunch in the city next to Daravara. Vegan brunch powered by the radical dudes in Salin’ On, they feature fresh coffee, cocktails and tasty arrays of scrambles, breakfast sandwiches and more. Local DJ, Thomas Scott usually spins during brunch, as well, so look forward to a fun playlist whilst you nosh.  Last time they hosted a brunch, it was outrageously packed, so get there early to secure a sweet spot!
https://www.facebook.com/events/558475050974077/
Rock the Pint featuring I Am Machi // Suicide Helpline // Darryl Mathews // Violette Coquette // Thomas Scott
The Pint Downtown
FREE. 9pm.
I’ve always been a fan of I Am Machi. Not only because they are an adorable married duo who play a wicked rock n’ roll show, but because they genuinely have a great time doing it. Their stage presence is endearingly delightful and they shred. A fascinating combination. Suicide Helpline are a relatively new project, and very much reminiscent of the Damned, in my opinion. Darryl Mathews is a solo artist with a folky flair. Plus, Violette Coquette will toss a burlesque performance into the mix with the aforementioned Thomas Scott spinning throughout the night. And it’s free, so that’s always a bonus.

This Week in #yegmusic
As we hit the first week of February, we may still need gentle reminders that winter is no longer an excuse to stay in and miss out on shows.
At this point, our gloomy skies may be inspiring more lethargy than anything else, and so put into practice the theory that singing and dancing cure feelings of anxiety and depression! Everyone wins!
Thursday, February 4th
Dead Honey // Hazeldean // Within Rust
Filthy McNasty’s
$5. 8pm
A nice little rock show for a Thursday evening. Shows at Filthy’s have been packed recently, and so if you plan on attending, arrive on time! This will be post hardcore band, Within Rust’s first show in Edmonton with locals Hazeldean and Dead Honey. If you’re into melodic, emo-punk, this is a show for you!
https://www.facebook.com/events/217971671871778/
Friday, February 5th
DRI HIEV
with Hellen + Florals
Bohemia
$10. Doors at 8. Bands at 9pm
If you’re craving something more on the avant garde side of things, this art punk rock show may be just the thing to scratch your itch. Dri Hiev pass through from Calgary every so often, but their live performance is definitely not something to miss. When they played Sled Island last year, they left quite a few of us in silent awe, which I think, is a great reaction to offer an audience. They are loud, darkly playful and eye opening. Go see them.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1209163915780242/
The Bright Light Social Hour
with Pyramid//Indigo + mirrim
Brixx
$14 advance at Blackbyrd or ticketfly.com. Doors at 8, show at 9pm
On the other side of the musical scale, this show boasts dreamy musical landscapes and soaring vocals. There will still be an experimental, artful noise component, but think with more romance. Lustful indie rock at its’ finest.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1658633094415144/
Saturday, February 6th
Lutra Lutra with River & Castle
Filthy McNasty’s
FREE. 4pm
Eclectic rock with vast influences, Lutra Lutra are a young band with a lot of promise. It’s always interesting to witness a new band work toward finding their own sound and so catching them live will be a clear glimpse into the direction they will continue to head with their music. A nice light musical adventure for a Saturday afternoon.
https://www.facebook.com/events/513154592177408/
Joe Nolan and the Dogs
The Empress Ale House
FREE. 4pm.
Another delightful free show to add to the weekend. Their first show was a mere few weeks ago before Christmas and so their second is bound to be bigger and better than ever. Plus, the Empress is just nice to hang out in.

Homeless Not Hopeless - A SAFQEY Fundraiser
Burlesque // Comedy // Drag Show
Evolution Lounge
$15. Doors at 7pm, show at 730pm.
Safer Accomodations for Queer Edmonton Youth (SAFQEY) is a grassroots organization in Edmonton that is actively working at establishing a homeless shelter for LGBTQ youth in Edmonton. Currently, Edmonton offers no specialized services supporting homeless LGBTQ youth, and the high risk of homophobic and transphobic violence—combined with a lack of specialized training for shelter workers—means that many sexual and gender minority youth feel safer on the streets than in shelters.
100% of all profits through the door will be donated to SAFQEY, to support them in opening the first youth LGBTQ homeless shelter in all of Alberta.
Burlesque performances by Holly Von Sinn, Forbsie Flare and more. Comedy by Nadine Hunt, Tamara Appleton and more.
A diverse line up for an amazing cause!

Vue Weekly Presents: Motorbike James // Dagan Harding // RV Farms
The Almanac
$12. Doors at 8pm, show at 9pm
Celebrating local music with Vue Weekly at various venues around the city. This shall be the first presentation with the 18+ version of a Dagan Harding show, that is, if you missed him at the Mercury Room earlier in the day. Crisp pop rock at a crisp new venue.
https://www.facebook.com/events/481565592026950/
Golden Years with Feel Alright Susan + Wares
9910
$10 advance, $12 at the door. 9pm
Calgary’s Feel Alright are coming back for an EP re-release with SK’s Susan and Edmonton’s Frankenstein band, Golden Years and the uber talented and enthusiastic Wares. This show has also turned into a shoe drive for Boyle Street Community Services, so feel free to bring along any gently used sneakers, winter boots, work boots, etc. that you’re not using anymore! Might as well do some good while we’re getting together, regardless.

Sunday, February 7th
Bring Out Your Dead Vinyl Exchange
The Empress Ale House
FREE. 3 - 8pm
2016′s travelling record store continues in February at the Empress! Last month, Filthy McNasty’s was a breeding ground for innocuous record finds and cheap beer. The adventure continues this weekend. Round out your weekend with a few casual pints and a gentle record perusal.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1314169991942226/
Living with Lions // Youth Decay // Dangercat // Fire Next Time // E-Town Beatdown
The Local Omnivore
$10. ALL AGES. Doors at 7, bands at 730pm
The most stacked punk rock line up this side of Winnipeg. Youth Decay recently released a new album, which is chock full of raucous party anthems (even though the title is ‘The Party’s Over). Dangercat are popping in from Winnipeg and homegrown heroes Fire Next Time and E-town Beatdown are a blast to watch perform every single time. This show is all ages, so there will be no tolerance for drinking or drugs. Leave your doobies at home ya miscreants!

A full week it is! Get out and enjoy it!

This Week in #yegmusic
After a gap in relaying the weekly shows of Edmonton, I’ve returned with a fresh list. I must mention the one show I had time for last week, as it was wildly impressive and inspiring. Calgary’s Spastic Panthers came through Edmonton for their last show, ever, which was heartbreaking for a number of reasons. Their vocalist, Dan Izzo was a wild man on stage, hanging from any available rafters and maintaining intense eye contact with those who dared approach the stage. Their savage presence shook Filthy McNasty’s and I only wanted to see them play a longer set. Fairly certain I smiled the entire time.

Black Sabbath is in town this week for what is said to be their farewell show, but if you goofed and missed tickets like I did, you won’t be hard pressed to find another show to check out.
Thursday, January 28th
Freak Heat Waves with Fist City // Gary Debussy // Zebra Pulse
The Buckingham
8pm. $12 advance (yeglive.ca) $15 at the door
Victoria’s Freak Heat Waves join Lethbridge’s Fist City and two of Edmonton’s weirdest and finest, Gary Debussy and Zebra Pulse. A mash up of experimental, heavy instrumental and eccentric rock n’ roll. An easy going, yet audibly interesting Thursday evening line up.
https://www.facebook.com/events/198881963782190/
Enforcer & Warbringer
with Cauldron // Exmortus
Starlite Room
7pm. $20 advance (concertworks.ca or blackbyrd)
A sweet blend of Swedish heavy metal, SoCal thrash and Juno Award nominated miscreants. A great opportunity to catch some top notch metal music if the aforementioned show just won’t do it for you.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1437480103239172/
Friday, January 29th
Languid // Abuse of Substance // Mass Distraction // Tekarra
Bohemia
9pm. $10 at the door
A punk rock throw down! If I were in town, I would absolutely be going to this show.
https://www.facebook.com/events/175685712785288/
Tribal Nation presents: Random Rab
with Collectivision // Benjamind // Spenny B // Dreamaura
Mercury Room
9pm. $26.87 online only (link below)
Played in yoga classes all over the world, Random Rab’s music sets a beautiful and fluid stage for expansion and ambient listening. Local, Collectivisoin will certainly rouse the crow with his creative and deeply thoughtful signature tracks. Not to mention to vendors handicrafts, live painting and body art. This will certainly be a wild time, filled with hippies, at the Mercury Room.

Saturday, January 30th
BLACK SABBATH (obviously)
Grizzly Trail with the Ativans & Point Place
Filthy McNasty’s
8pm. $5 at the door.
A healthy dose of pop punk from the likes of locals, Grizzly Trail, who are releasing their EP during this freak show featuring support from fellow Edmontonians, Point Place and Calgary’s the Ativans. After doing interviews with both Grizzly Trail and the Ativans, I can safely assure you that this will be the place to be Saturday night if you missed out on Black Sabbath tickets. Ozzy probably won’t be dressed like a lumberjack, anyway.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1539891162989580/
Math Party & Quasar
The Almanac
9:30pm. $10 at the door
Math Party’s first show ever with post punkers, Quasar, who just released a single on their bandcamp page for their upcoming album release in 2016. The Almanac is still warming up show-wise, so if you’re into some slightly sweet, more alt-rock tinged punk and indie, this is the show for you!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1672402199713989/
Sunday, January 31st
The Drop Outs
with Holiday Monday // Balderdash // The Fashion Police
On the Rocks
8pm. $10 at the door (or buy tickets from the bands)
A snotty line up of up and coming punk and alternative bands from around town. The Drop Outs are sounding great with their recent releases on soundcloud, and if their live show is anything like their former incarnation in Pale Blue Dot, it’s sure to be a debaucherous and fun time.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1004004372989756/
For those of you in Calgary, the Big Winter Classic is kicking off on Thursday, and features just as much craft beer as awesome music. The Mounties will be in town as well as Guantanamo Baywatch, the Solids, the Wet Secrets, the Betrayers, 36?, Napalmpom and so many more. See you around, friends!

Edmonton’s Almanac Opens to Warm Response
Last night’s grand opening of the city’s newest establishment offering live music received a very enthusiastic welcome.
West coast dwellers, The Lion The Bear The Fox, opened the night, which was surprising to me only for a moment before I noticed their older family and friends in the audience offering wild support.
It was somewhat warm and comforting to note a new venue which accommodates to an older, more mature crowd. Something I think has been missed with some of the places I’ve visited in the past. Or, perhaps, I’ve been missing something.
The trio opened their set with “The Battle of Me,” which is a love song about loving your woman ferociously. What I loved right off the bat about this band was their raw, hearty and moving storytelling. If country sounded like this in the mainstream format, I might be more inclined to listen to it.
Almost everything they said on stage was funny and had the crowd busting a gut. They had us snapping our fingers and clapping along during several of their songs and the room was full of joyful dancing.
The venue had a great sound, especially considering they were working with a sound system that had never been used before that night. In moments it was a little loud, but overall was crisp and clear.
In certain points during their set, The Lion The Bear The Fox’s harmonies were a little gritty, but it worked well with their overall aesthetic. They also included a quick Pink Floyd montage with a few lyrics from “Another Brick in the Wall.” From a roost-y, folk rock perspective, it was risky, but their savage delivery and thoughtful inclusion of the clip within one of their own songs worked very well.
They rounded out their set with a song about their love for each other as artists and men, which was absolutely charming and captivating. Seeing anyone bond over music is never a disappointing experience.
Edmonton’s Altameda closed the show with a slightly grungier version of what we had just heard. A side project of Stepmothers’ Troy Snaterse, the quintet wisely used the small stage area to create a very unique sound.
They incorporated a slide guitar, which gave their sound a succulent bluegrass feel, but Troy’s more rugged musical style shone through and maintained a rougher, edgier element to everything they did.
Before going on stage, Troy described their sound as “heartland rock.” While his bandmates chuckled at the notion, I don’t know how I could have described them better.
The venue itself occupies the space that used to be Red Square, a vodka lounge and aims to be more of a micro venue, as mentioned in a recent Edmonton Journal article. This Wednesday evening live music experience won’t be a frequent occurrence (for now, anyway), but they aim to offer live music most weekends.
From my experience with their food and cocktail menu, I know they have massive potential as a stand out restaurant experience on Whyte Ave, and some of their upcoming show line ups are beyond incredible. When you go, and if you like whiskey, try their Whiskey sour. It was so refreshing, I had two! It may be an expensive place to go for drinks and food before a show every weekend, but it’s a nice treat to be fed well at the same place as the show you’ll be attending that same night. I know I’m excited to taste the Charcuterie Board the next time I’m there.
Stay tuned for shows including Thick Lines, Counterfeit Jeans, Saskatoon’s Shooting Guns, Gender Poutine and so many more incredible artists.
So far, a win for the more mature live show going crowd in the city.

This Week in #yegmusic
It’s a fairly packed week for the Edmonton music community, which is rather exciting for a number of reasons. Said reasons will unravel themselves as you read on, but one of the most notable being the grand opening of The Almanac on Whyte Ave. As the Wunderbar and Pawn Shop closed down last year, the Whyte Ave scene has died in some ways, saved in others by the Buckingham, Black Dog and Empress. While these are arguably (or obviously, depending on your perspective) the best pubs on the Ave, it’s exciting to see a new venue open and take a shot at revitalizing a once thriving area in Edmonton to see live music.
Plus, needless to say, the legendary David Bowie has left Earth to live amongst the stars from which he came, and so the Metro will be honouring him this Saturday with a midnight screening of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. One of the more chill ways to spend your Saturday evening.
So, sure it’s cold, but get out and see some live music and see something new. Even if you end up hating it, you stepped up and changed your routine. Bravo!
Wednesday, January 13th
The Lion The Bear The Fox
with guests Altameda
The Almanac
7pm. Advance tickets $15 on yeglive.ca or Blackbyrd Myoozik.
Grand opening of the live music portion of this new venue. Seating is limited and we get a chance to see BC’s The Lion The Bear The Fox, so if you really wanna check it out, this is your warning to get tickets now. The menu looks tasty and the space looks inviting. Let’s help make this place a success!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1038896662818506/
Thursday, January 14th
Lucette with Marial Buckley and El Niven of Stone Iris
Mercury Room
Doors at 7pm. $10 at the door
Conceivably the perfect kind of winter music, this line up provides a delightful, yet gritty local music experience. Also, if you haven’t eaten at the Mercury Room before, their vegan fare is incredible. Mariel Buckley will be joining in from Calgary with El Niven opening the night. He’s one of the most charismatic people I’ve ever had the joy of meeting, and so you’ll likely be moved and entertained as soon as he hits the stage.
https://www.facebook.com/events/911935122227069/
Swear By the Moon // Luke Thompson
Bohemia
9pm. $10 at the door
This venue is quickly becoming one of the city’s go-to’s for live music. With Wunderbar’s Craig Martell at the helm booking shows, this promising and intimate venue is just heating up. Go check it out!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1519999808300200/
Pigeon Breeders // Little League // Space Classic
Accent Lounge
9pm. $10 at the door.
An instrumental, jazzy dream. A stone’s throw from the heart of Whyte Ave, an easy Thursday evening if you’re feeling ambient, creative vibes that day.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1663358930576480/
Friday, January 15th
Fred Penner with the Willy Nillys and Rusty
The Buckingham
7pm. $30 at the door
The legendary Fred Penner! At our legendary (or, at least on the way to being legendary) Buckingham! Advance tickets are sold out, but if you show up right at seven, chances are you might just get in.
https://www.facebook.com/events/964299983609490/
Crystal Eyes // Gender Poutine // Strange Fires // Shukov
9910
9pm. $10 at the door.
Calgary’s dreamboats, Crystal Eyes join the playful and fun Gender Poutine and the raw and spunky Strange Fires on stage for what is sure to be the most hipster crowd ever. I may be saying that phrase every week, but it’s totally okay. I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Shukov yet, but if it’s anything like their recordings, grab someone’s hand and sway smiling. Not to mention, the talented eye of Evan Pearce will be providing wicked projections and visual art to feast your eyes on!
https://www.facebook.com/events/149309982100223/
The James Beaudry Band // the Drop Outs // Three Corners
Bohemia
9pm. $10 at the door
Rock and/or roll! The Drop Outs are a bratty blend of NOFX and the more mature incarnation of Blink 182′s later years. A great line up with some of Edmonton’s most talented and raw up and comers!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1097818993570875/
Saturday, January 16th
N3K Album Release
with guests the Will Scott Band + Fauxfoe
The Almanac
8pm. $10 at the door
Another instrumental, noisy extravaganza. The new album, Lucky, Extra, will get live exposure and you will get another chance to check out the Almanac as a live venue. The last time I saw N3K was at the Farrow Customer Appreciation Show, and while I can’t remember a lot of it, they were frenetic, fun and captivating. Go help revitalize the Whyte Ave music scene!
https://www.facebook.com/events/197656053913104/
Midnight Screening of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Metro Cinema
11:59pm. $12 at the door
On July 3, 1973, David Bowie played at London’s Hammersmith Odeon Theatre. Director D.A. Pennebaker, best known for the earlier rock films Don’t Look Back and Monterey Pop, was on hand to document this legendary concert.
Sunday, January 17th
Not Enough Fest Mixer
Hartcourt House
2pm. FREE.
The Not Enough Fest has been such an incredible initiative since before the inaugural event last February. In anticipation of their second event come the spring, this event has been created to support those who may have always wanted to make music and/or play in a band, but have potentially felt excluded or unable to do so.  This is a free, all ages mixer exclusively for women, trans and queer communities to gather, mingle and take a look at potential involvement in the festival as musicians. Snacks and activities to complement the mingling process will be provided. According to the event page listed below, there will be a few surprises that may or may not involve making some noise!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1720145718222887/
RAMPAGE ft. Randy Rampage of DOA
with Zero Cool and Rhubarbs
DV8
8pm. $12 at the door
Randy Rampage of DOA fame (did you catch them at Up + Downtown Fest a few months ago?!?!?!) is popping back into town for a visit with his latest project, Rampage. He’s sung for thrash legends, Annihilator, as well as played in the metal project Stress Eater 9. Even though it’s Sunday, we don’t get chances like this very often. I know I’ll be there.
https://www.facebook.com/events/783980211710689/
With this eclectic myriad of events happening this week, there are ample opportunities to go check out something new. Go do something, break out of any potential winter funks and have a great time! At the very least, go check out that badass winter ice castle in Hawrelak park.

Celebrating Christopher Zuk, who is arguably Edmonton music’s best friend, will include a few notable acts and collaborations. Not only is this the last Minstrels on Speed show ever (according to Scott Lingley when I interviewed him for this week’s issue of Vue Weekly), but we get to welcome Calgary’s Night Committee. They’ve got a brand new bassist and are pumped to bring her up to visit us. Counterfeit Jeans have a surprise up their sleeve and Cassia Hardy is stepping out to do a solo Wares show. All of this, and there will be cake. The choice is obvious.

This Week in #yegmusic
After a brief holiday hiatus, I’m stepping back into tirelessly listing all of the must see shows in our beloved town each week. This week may be particularly extensive, considering the insane amount of shows happening on New Year’s Eve. Here we go....
Wednesday, December 30th
Metro Cinema Presents the Dark Side of Oz
Tickets online. 7pm.
Although the members of Pink Floyd vehemently deny they intentionally created 1973′s Dark Side of the Moon so that it would sync up with the Wizard of Oz, those who have experimented with it would say otherwise. I can’t wait to finally experience it, myself!
https://www.facebook.com/events/181538282198937/
Thursday, December 31st
New Year’s Eve at the Black Dog
The Velveteins // Fever Feel (Calgary)
$15 advance at the Black Dog. 7pm.
DJ’s on the wooftop and comedy in the underdog. Something for everyone!!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1528676044113853/
New Year’s Eve with Royal Tusk
w// Thrillhouse + Norell

The gentlemen of Royal Tusk have a huge year ahead of them with their highly anticipated new album which they recently finished recording. With local loveable goofballs Thrillhouse and Norell, this should be a hilarious and great time!

This Week in #yegmusic
Not only does our fine, frosty city have some very festive happenings this week, but we shall also be blessed by a new Star Wars film! I, personally, will have to wait until the weekend’s out before I can catch the new flick so I can take in a few shows first. Geekiness aside, it’s absolutely worth it to be able to support such noble events this week! Here they are....
Wednesday, December 16th
Ho! Ho! Ho! Down featuring Joe Nolan and his band
Black Dog Freehouse
$ FREE. 10 pm show.
An annual Christmas tradition!
Thursday, December 17th
We Were Friends // Lutra Lutra // Railtown Park
The Buckingham
$8 advance... gunna guess $10 at the door. Doors at 7, music at 8pm.
While the information on the Facebook event for this show was sketchy at best, it appears to me that the show is an album fundraiser for We Were Friends. A delightful group of humans, We Were Friends are adding newcomers to the Edmonton scene, Lutra Lutra, to the bill as well as Railtown Park; both of which incorporate several genres to their music. A quite heartwarming approach!
Sound of YEG presents: Not Quite Christmas
Cha Island
Leave a donation at the door for the starving artists (their words, not mine). 8pm.
Abra King, Yev and Magnet and the Magnettes.
Cha Island is a delightful venue, and these performers are much deserved of your time as some of the finest up and comers in the Edmonton acoustic folk community.
Friday, December 18th
Provincial Archive Album Release Party and Annual Holiday Shaker
Studio 96
$13 advance. $15 at the door. Doors at 730. Show at 9.
Guests Diamond Mind and Billie Zizi.
While it may be hard to forget about how you didn’t get a ticket to the opening day of Star Wars: Episode VII, this may be the perfect escape from your woes. Each of the three performers at this Holiday Shaker are warm, inviting and quite merry, if I do say so myself. Also, if you snag a ticket at Blackbyrd Myoozik in advance, you score a digital copy of Provincial Archive’s new album! A Christmas miracle!
Sweety Pie Records Holiday Fun Fest!
Ritchie Hall
$10 at the door, which opens at 8pm.
Hosted by the hilarious Jon Mick, Sweety Pie Records are throwing their first Christmas bash! Not only will Jon Mick be hosting, you’ll see special performances by Jon Comyn and his full band, Marlaena Moore and Rusty!
The comedy portion is hefty indeed featuring jokes by Mike Robertson, Carina Morton, Adam Dyck and Tamara Appleton.
Though you may have guessed that would be all you would get from this evening, you were wrong! The Good Women Dance Collective will also be offering a special dance performance!! Wild!
Freecloud Records 30th Anniversary Christmas Party Pt. 1
Rocky Mountain Ice House
8pm. Tickets at Freecloud, Rocky Mountain Icehouse and yeglive.ca
Mad Bomber Society, Cygnets, the Fuzz Kings and Ben Disaster.
In an interview I did with Rich yesterday at the shop, it was hard not to get excited about the two celebration shows for Freecloud’s 30th anniversary. Owner, long time time employee and original customer at the shop, Rich spoke excitedly about the performers for this weekends’ shows, explaining that everyone playing has a special connection to the record store. Super warm and fuzzy vibes!
Saturday, December 19th
Raygun Cowboys // Gutterdemons // Hell Fire Special
Starlite Room
$20 advance at blackbird or yeglive.ca
If you're into psychobilly punk and outrageous horn solos, this is the show for you! A wild and energetic time, the Raygun Cowboys and their pals will put you in a very festive mood, indeed (translation: their music will make you wanna drink and dance).
Freecloud Records 30th Anniversary Christmas Party Pt. 2
Filthy McNasty’s
$12 at Freecloud Records exclusively! Cash only! 8pm.
Whiz Kids reunion, Mad Bomber Society, Cutoffs, Abuse of Substance + Wares (solo)
As mentioned for the first show, Rich chose bands to play for the 30th anniversary celebrations who have solid connections to the record store. In such an intimate venue, it will be super exciting to see the Whiz Kids reunion as well as all of the other awesome bands showing up to pay respects to our city’s longest running record store!
Golden West Music Fest’s Last Show Ever
9910
$13 advance at blackbyrd or foosh. $15 at the door. Doors at 9pm.
Napalmpom // Caity Fisher and the Wastoids
While waiting to hear back about more details on what could be Golden West’s last show ever (does anyone have clarity on that? Someone set me straight!), what we do know is that Calgary’s Napalmpom are and absolutely great rock n’ roll band. If you’re like myself, who hasn’t seen Caity Fisher and the Wastoids, what is there to lose?
Sunday, December 20th
Girlfriend // Gender Poutine // Max Ulich
Bohemia
$10. 9pm.
Victoria’s Girlfriend are popping in for a visit with local support from the eccentric and talented Gender Poutine. Not to mention Max Ulich, who is described as “the most darling noir crooner.” A good ole time on a Sunday!
2nd Annual Deathspoke Christmas Party and Fundraiser
Denizen Hall
$10 advance. $15 at the door (unless you bring a donation for YESS). 8pm.
James Renton // the Nielsons // Black VIII // Fresh Cut Lime // Special Guest Headliner
Great opportunity to give back with the fine folks at Deathspoke. Not only are they taking YESS donations at the door, but they’re raising funds for a friends’ eSight glasses! How awesome! For more information on what YESS needs and Shaun’s story, check out these links....
http://esighteyewear.com/eyewear
http://yess.org/donate/in-kind-donation/
Until next week, support your local artists, geeks, musicians, venues, bartenders, etc. Support each other!

This Week in #yegmusic
Whenever somebody carelessly comments there’s nothing to do in Edmonton, I groan loudly. Sometimes it’s an internal groan of impatience and other times, an audible grumble preceding a discussion that much resembles the following list.
This Friday, December 11th, for example, has so many amazing shows to check out that I’m desperately working on my bilocation skills. Chatty banter aside, here is what’s happening in Edmonton music this week.
Tuesday, December 8th
Between the Bread: Farrow’s Customer Appreciation Show
Brixx Bar (below the Starlite Room.... no membership required for this one)
$10. 8pm.
N3K // Desiderata // Bonspiel
If you’ve never had a coffee and sandwich combo at Farrow, you’re not living in Edmonton correctly. A rotating assortment of highly creative sandwiches with outrageous names to match what’s between the bread. Not only do these people make delicious treats, but a lot of them play in great bands. This is their tribute to you.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1488797964759182/
Wednesday, December 9th
Ali’s Birthday Bash
Filthy McNasty’s
FREE. 6pm.
Marlaena Moore // Garreth Burrows // Curt Blandy // Andrew Oh // Fred Brenton // Stephani Brenton
If you don’t yet know Ali, she’s a saucy gal who has loved the Toronto Blue Jays long before it was cool and she happens to work very hard for a few super rad bars in town. This is only the first of two shows to celebrate her this week.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1003582339684452/
Thursday, December 10th
Authority Zero with Versus the World // Grizzly Trail // Point Place
Brixx Bar (below Starlite... again, no memberships needed down here)
$20 (potentially a few shekels more at the door). Doors at 8pm.
Pop punk legends from Arizona only pass through every so often. Versus the World has members from the Ataris and Lagwagon and the two local supporting bands are pretty fun to watch on stage too. A punk rock Christmas miracle!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1671762376387047/
Nashville Pussy with In the Whale // Moving Bodies
Denizen Hall
$15 (door price could increase). Doors at 8pm.
A touch raunchier than the aforementioned show, grammy nominated Nashville Pussy have been described in many ways. Sleaze rock, psychobilly and cowpunk are just a few ideas to plant in your head while deciding what to do Thursday night. If anything, Denizen has a great arcade if you need to take a break from all the sleaze on stage.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1530455727245829/
Friday, December 11th
Anatomy Cats // Hellen // Sandinistas
Buckingham
Cover by donation for Luca. Show at 8 pm sharp.
Piggy backing onto Ali’s second birthday party of the week, we get a chance to do some good with our little lives at this show. Without simply copying and pasting the incredible story of this kid and his mom, please take the time to read the info on their Facebook event page and do what you can to help.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1647864218817471/
Christmas Disco!
Clever Rabbit Cafe
$10 or $5 with a packaged toy for a kid in need. 8 pm.
Low Level // I Hate Sex // Vibes // Feminal Fluids // ENT
When on earth would you ever get to see these raucous hardcore, post punk, riot grrls play at the Clever Rabbit Cafe on 124th Street?! That in itself is astonishing, but you also get to do some good if you bring a toy to the show!
https://www.facebook.com/events/981461305275955/
Uncle Outrage // Cygnets // Boosh // Moon Museum
Bohemia
$12. 8 pm.
Not only is this show a delightful curation of very talented local bands, but word on the street is, there’ll be books for sale too! Neat.
https://www.facebook.com/events/711981278904049/
7″ Split Release for Power Buddies + Racket (CGY)
Cha Island
$10. 8 pm.
With friends Gender Poutine.
Another delightfully unique venue for some of Edmonton’s funnest bands to see. Artsy, silly fun music done well. Always fun to see yyc and yeg bands coming together to create cool things! Go buy their split release!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1493821197581324/
Saturday, December 12th
Bonspiel + Sir Ma’am Ma’am
Filthy McNasty’s
FREE. 4 pm.
Oh, you didn’t get to see Bonspiel play on Tuesday at Brixx? Never fear, they’ve got a second, and free, show during the weekend! Did I mention it’s free?
https://www.facebook.com/events/1680432162202099/
Dagan Harding + guests
Buckingham
$10. 8pm.
Honestly, I can’t think of many things that are of quality coming out of Regina (sorry, not sorry), but Dagan Harding is one of them. Without regurgitating information you can simply read in the link below, he’s done many cool things, and his newest solo project is one of them.
https://www.facebook.com/events/992940927434154/
Stepmothers + Counterfeit Jeans
9910 (dope new venue below the Common)
$10. 8pm.
During a recent interview with Stepmothers, there were vague rumblings about their opening one of the first Counterfeit Jeans shows, but nothing they said could really be taken too seriously, so I let it be. Regardless, let it be known both bands offer some of the city’s finest garage post punk and they deserve our adoration.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1518130791844644/
A mere highlight reel of the amazing things happening all of the time in our city. Go support local artists and venues this holiday season!
