Venice Carnival, Italy: The Carnival of Venice is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy, famous throughout the world for its elaborate costumes and masks. The Carnival ends on Shrove Tuesday, which is the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. According to legend, the Carnival of Venice began after the military victory of the Venetian Republic over the patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrich II, in the year 1162. In honour of this, the people started to dance and gather in St Mark's Square. It lasts for 10 days, usually starting at the end of January or beginning of February. Masks have always been an important feature of the Venetian Carnival. Wikipedia

Black History Spotlight: Ganga Zumba-The African King Who Built a Kingdom of Freedom in Brazil
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Leon Kwasi Kuntuo-Asare
Origins
Ganga Zumba (also known as Nganga Zumba) was born around 1630, in the kingdom of Kongo. It is believed that Zumba was the son of an African warrior princess named,  Aqualtune, who is believed to have been the daughter of an unknown African king of the Kongo. In 1665, Zumba's mom, Princess Aqualtune,  commanded a military force of about 10,000 men and women soldiers in the Battle of Mbwila, where she was defeated and captured by the Portuguese military forces. The Portuguese would kill over 5,000 men and women African warriors in the battle, and would also capture the King, his two sons, his two nephews, several hundred title holders and nobles, including four governors. The African warriors and regal elites would be sent to the Americas, for a new life of bondage and servitude.
A Life Of Slavery In Brazil
Zumba, along with his brother Zona, and his sister Sabina (who was the mother of his nephew and future successor Zumbi Dos Palmares), were enslaved at the Plantation of Santa Rita, in what is now northwest Brazil. However,  they wouldn't stay there for too long and would soon escape to the area of Palmares.
Brazilian Maroon King
In the 1670s, Zumba formed a Maroon (Quilombo) kingdom and formed a royal compound called Macaco. Within his compound, Zumba had a large palace, multiple wives, guards for protection, and many of his most loyal subjects. There were 1,500 houses on compound grounds,  which housed family, friends, guards, and officials, all of whom were considered to be part of his royal family,  with Zumba being the king and supreme leader.
A Treaty With The Enemy
In 1678, King Zumba and a Portuguese governor of Pernambuco agreed to a treaty that required Zumba and his people to relocate to Cucaú Valley. In return, the Portuguese agreed to accept Zumba as the Supreme Leader and ruler of his people.
Renewed Conflict With The Portuguese and Royal Betrayal
By 1679, Zumba's treaty with the Portuguese was challenged by his nephew Zumbi (the son of his sister).  Zumbi would lead an uprising against Zumba and would also lead attacks against the Portuguese due to their attempts to redistribute Maroon land in Palmares among the Portuguese colonial soldiers.
In the chaos that followed,  Zumba was poisoned.  It is believed that he was most likely poisoned by the hands of one of his relatives because of the treaty  he agreed to with the Portuguese. Some historians believe that Amaro and Joao the "Mulatto " Gaspar are the two men who killed Zumba.
The Aftermath
Many of Zumba's disciples who migrated to Cucaú Valley were recaptured and put back into bondage by the Portuguese.  Due to this fact, Zumba's nephew Zumbi would continue the resistance started by his uncle.

Anti-Capitalism and Wicca
I don't like women like Katy Perry using the word "Goddess" because they do it in a Jungian way: in reference to a cisheteronormative view of womanhood, and framing patriarchy as "complimentarian feminism."
To me, Goddesses represent not only deities but also their followers who were erased and demonized not only by patriarchal religions like Christianity, but also the social and economic class system, which was founded on gender inequality. There's a book called The Patriarchs: The Origins of Inequality by Angela Saini which discusses this, BUT the book is wrong about how modern-day Iran is: if you look at travel vlogs, it's clear that there is no mandated veiling.
Capitalism started thousands of years later and was founded on the African slave trade, but capitalism added new dimensions to the class system. There's a book called Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici which focuses on how the 16th century European witch hunts were tied to private property.

It is incorrect for the Assassin's Creed franchise to claim that the Soviets would be Templars. Yes, there is reason to see the Stalin regime as the villains, but IDEOLOGICALLY it makes no sense; the Templars were the original capitalists.
A podcaster named Adnan Husain lays out how the Crusades built the infrastructure for capitalism, financialization, and Western imperialism.
Yes, slavery (and class) existed for thousands of years, but during the Crusades there was huge investments in the maritime industry in order to transport troops to the Middle East. Capitalism was founded on the slave trade, which relied on ships and the expanded influence of the West.
The Templars were known as the first corporation, and they get their name from the Temple of Solomon which was a gold dome.

During the Great Depression, many American families faced severe financial hardship, and everyday items became essential for survival. Flour sacks, which were typically used to carry flour, became a valuable resource for poor families. Instead of discarding the sacks once emptied, people reused them to create clothing, bedding, and other household items. This practice was especially common among those who could not afford store-bought fabric.

The Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Oconee, and many other tribes created Trail trees or trail marker trees. They were an ancient form of land and water navigational aid, as well as a marking system to denote areas of significant importance such as ceremonial sites. These trees were used by many, if not all, of the Native American tribes and later by fur traders and early pioneers. The Trail Marker Trees differed in their appearance and formation from tribe to tribe and from region to region. Examples of these trees have been found all across the United States and throughout Canada.

Has anyone else noticed a Wheel of the Year effect in a modern context when it comes to candy? In April, you buy candy for Easter and maybe Beltane, and 6 months later you buy candy for Halloween/Samhain.
Also, Easter/Beltane is when you see decorative eggs, which can symbolize those not yet born. On the other side of the Wheel is Halloween/Samhain, with skeletons to symbolize those who are dead.
The full moon after Ostara is the Egg Moon.
And bulb flowers (life that has come out of a round thing) are associated with the month of May.
