Utena and Questions

So I’ve recently made the mistake of rewatching Revolutionary Girl Utena for the thousandth time-while I’m sick too, so I’m mixing cough medicine and Ikuhara-and I’m again reminded of something that fascinates me about the beginning of the show/Utena’s early character. That is, Utena does question what’s going on. Quite often.

I know the joke is that Utena is a dumb jock/himbo type, and while this isn’t untrue it does a bit of disservice to the writing. Utena is quite smart, it’s just as the duels progress and her involvement/investment with it, Anthy begins conditioning her to just go with everything. The most literal example of this is Utena’s grades; Wakaba says she never needed to study much to get good grades in maths, but now she needs Miki to help her pass a make up exam.

Something not pointed out enough is Utena’s penchant for questions in the beginning. She tries on multiple occasions to get answers (What’s with the castle? Why is Anthy the Rose Bride? etc.) but every character, Anthy especially, shoots her down and encourages her to just except things as they are. Stop trying to figure things out, it is what it is Utena, who cares why a sword pops out of her chest.

And just as Utena is caught up into the romance and fantasy of the duels, where she acts like the prince, Utena stops asking questions; stops trying to learn about her situation and Anthy’s. Until, they open the coffin and promise to share a poisoned cup of tea.
