Shiro’s Mental Illness: In-Canon Symptoms
Just a run-down of Shiro’s major symptoms of mental illness as portrayed in the show, for reference purposes.
1. Panic Attacks
1x09 - Crystal Venom. This is a panic attack:

Notice how Shiro’s reaction to Sendak is to irrationally flush him out of the ship; Sendak is triggering the panic attack, and Shiro reacts instinctively to remove the trigger:

And you can clearly see the panic on his face afterwards:

1x01 - Pilot. Shiro’s reaction to being strapped to the table in the Galaxy Garrison is another example of panic:

Which makes sense in light of his nightmare in 2x03 - Shiro’s Escape, where we see him strapped to a table in Galra captivity:

Being strapped down is triggering Shiro’s panic; it reminds him of being in Galra captivity, and his instinctive response is stress/panic/fear/anxiety.
More under the cut, because there’s a lot of pictures:

scoriarought:
“I knew what I was doing.” Keith counters quickly, almost fiercely. Maybe that’s true, but the fact of the matter is that the team didn’t. And being so unpredictable, near turbulent at times, had undoubtedly put the others on edge. The words cast in Keith’s direction bite a little despite his attempts to affirm his actions. Then it stings, because Shiro is clearly unimpressed and even disappointed in how he performed out there in the fight.
And yet, Keith had done everything in his power to try and keep the team safe keep Shiro safe and finish the mission. Even if had meant taken a few precarious corners here and there. It was all for the cause. Fist clenched, Keith purses his lips and attempts to formulate a better response than the one bursting from his chest. Shiro’s hand on his shoulder, the insinuation he’s only looking out for himself, is the catalyst.
Maybe he’s being irrational in the aftermath of racing adrenaline, maybe Keith shouldn’t let this get to him so much but Shiro is the one person he expected something from: a level of understanding that Keith was looking out for not only the team but for him. And the fact Shiro is placing himself outside the equation is both confusing and alarming. If I don’t make it out of here, I want you to lead Voltron. There it is again, that haunting undertone. An implication of something. It’s not something Keith is okay to just let happen if it means compromising Shiro’s safety. Fire rushes through his veins and doesn’t stop until it’s spilling out over his skin and all of him is swathed in unyielding fury.
“You -what else was I supposed to do back there?! Just - just sit around and watch things get worse for everyone when I knew I could stop it?” What about you, why are you not including yourself why are you talking like you’re not going to be here- “There’s no point even thinking about what happened back there. What matters is that we’re all still here,” You included because you are part of the team.
“Everything turned out just fine, because like you said we’re a team and it - we worked through it together.”
Pause. A heavy jarring realisation sets crashes into Keith as his eyes trail back towards Shiro. Breath evens out. Fist unclenches. Oh. The ebbing wave of frustration and a multitude of things Keith isn’t sure how to voice and should never have let slip to the surface leave in its wake a tense silence. Eyes averted towards his feet, Keith nods quietly.
“I- Sorry. That was…- You’re right, Shiro.” Patience yields focus. Focus. “I’ll do better.”
⋆✦ - It had been a long time since Keith had snapped at him. For a second, Shiro’s scared. He’s scared that the year away from Keith has changed the two of them, driven them further than he thought. Maybe there were completely different people now. And then he gets rid of that thought. Because Keith isn’t angry at Shiro. He’s angry at himself. And honestly, how could Shiro have thought they’d grown apart? He knows Keith’s anger better than he knows his own. He knows this kind of rage comes from feeling wronged. Or maybe just misunderstood. And Shiro still knows Keith well enough to know the light in his eye when he realizes something. Shiro can only hope Keith’s realized the point he’s trying to make. “A team.” He repeats, echoing Keith’s realization. “That works together. It doesn’t all fall on one person’s shoulders.” Shiro’s heart had nearly stopped today, watching Keith fight. He fought like a flame. Bright. Strong. Brief. If Keith kept this up... there wouldn’t be a Keith to keep this up. And Shiro would face his own death before he let Keith face his. He reaches out, hand resting heavily on Keith’s shoulder. Partly to reassure him. Partly to reassure himself Keith is still there. “Don’t push yourself too hard Keith. You don’t need to do better. You just need to do....different. ” A sustaining flame. Not one that blinks out quickly. It feels important to tell him that. Shiro peers down at Keith. He doesn’t try to pull his chin up. He doesn’t try to get Keith to look at him. Instead he smiles down at the shorter paladin. Soft, even if Keith doesn’t see it. “And don’t apologize. You don’t need to. Just. Take care of yourself Keith. Trust us to have your back. We need you. And not just to form voltron.” He assures, before letting out a big sigh. Keith still isn’t looking at him. Shiro exhales again, and then pulls Keith in, wraps him in his arms. Hugs him tight. “Man. I really thought you were done for, for a minute there.” His voice is light though, as he talks into Keith’s hair. “I didn’t even think any of the lions could turn as fast as you did.” He wants to see Keith smile. “Come on. Lets go get decontaminated.”

⋆✦ - “Theres a friendly planet not too far from here.” He explains, grinning down at Keith. “According to Allura it’s mostly just plant life.” Of course Shiro had spoken to Allura the second he realized he’d forgotten to do something important for Keith. Keith deserved a day where he didn’t have to think about their cause, or their mission. And Shiro missed spending time with him when they weren’t under duress. “Hey now! Who taught you everything about flying you know?” He teases, human hand coming down to ruffle Keith’s already ruffled mullet. Its a little sloppy, but Shiro had never been left handed. “And come to think about it, who was the one who would sneak off the base with you so you could ride around on the bike, hmm?” Admittedly, it hadn’t been so much sneaking, as Shiro using his sway in the Garrison to buy some time for him and Keith to roam the desert. Even then he knew Keith well enough to know he needed time to blow off steam, get away from the garrison and do something a little reckless. He’ll have to talk to Keith about why he dropped out of the garrison, eventually. “Alright. You’re on punk. Coordinates are already in your lion. Last one to the planet......has to clean up whatever Lance did in the kitchen.” He had heard Coran yelling earlier. All Shiro know’s is that its a mess.
It's...your birthday? Keith I'm so sorry, I lost track of the months a while ago, much less the days but Lance was going around earlier....Oh. And. watch out. I saw him walking around with some confetti. I don't even know where he got that. But, anyway, We need to do something to celebrate. Want to go for a ride? We can take the lions and get off the ship for a little while.
“It’s okay, Takashi.”
Honestly, Keith hadn’t been expecting Shiro to remember or mention it. He has more than enough to deal with, more than enough that undoubtedly plagues his mind. And it’s not like he had told Shiro about his birthday, either. Because what matters above everything else is that they’re here and Shiro is here. Up here in space, time has melded into something far more fluid, days are days. That’s the only real marker. Mention of Lance has Keith’s lips twitching.
“Yeah, figures.”
The next words have him blinking in surprise.
“Takashi Shirogane,” There’s something light there, near playful affront. “Are you suggesting leaving the castle to take the lions out for something other than the mission?” Raising an eyebrow, Keith grins. It’s likely Shiro has already run this by Coran and Allura. But the fact his friend is considering doing this, relinquishing just for a moment that crushing weight on shoulders Keith will always endeavour to support, is monumental.
“Alright. So long as we don’t go far, I’m sure it won’t be a problem.” Pause. Grin widens. “If you can keep up with me and Red.”
#scoriarought#((awww this is so lighthearted and cute#((I have to go to work so I cant reply to the other one yet!!#((But i will soon!!

❝ I’m fine. ❞
Thinking about it, he realized that it was impossible to tell Shiro about his feelings. It would only be in the way. It hurt, but defeating Zarkon was more important. Telling Shiro now would only cause imbalance in their already shaky team.
Keith let out a sigh before scratching his head. The sound of their footsteps was all he could hear. It felt like an eternity since they left the Black Lion in the hangar. His throat felt dry.
He was not fine.
⋆✦ -“Keith....” Despite their year apart, Shiro still knows how to read his teammate. He had been scared, when he met him again, that he wouldn’t know him the way he used to. That Keiths movements, and thoughts, would have become alien to him. That Shiro would have lost something he couldn’t regain the year he spent in the Galra’s hold. But....Keith hasn’t changed that much. Shiro still knows him. Still trusts him. Shiro stops walking, and puts his hand on Keith’s arm. “I know when you’re fine. I know you. And I know you trust me.” He squeezes Keith’s arm, just gently. Just reminding him he’s there. “Please. Talk to me.”

He studied Shiro, listening as he spoke about his small fear of locked doors. Which made sense, he was a prisoner for a year. His thoughts here snatched away as he mentioned his breathing, a hand going to his side.
Lance was silent for a few moments, a rare occasion really. Normally he was fighting for room to talk, and now he seemed to have it all. He knew what he had to do, despite what he wanted. But, Shiro was right, as usual. His fears, weren’t worth the universe. And the more he thought on it the more he felt guilty. He shoved the feeling away his gaze meeting Shiro’ s. “Alright, I mean…you guys need a great sharpshooter, not just a good one.” Lance said, a small smile forming on his lips.
Man he really just hated the thought of getting in that pod, but…if Shiro could mange his fear, Lance could.
⋆✦ -“Thank you.” Shiro sighed, relieved. He continually surprised by his teammates. They dealt with so much, on a daily basis. Zarkon, the universe....the pressure was immense. And they always seemed to rise to the challenge. He offers Lance a smile. “I know its not really fair. Asking you to put so much of who you are on the line....and asking you to sacrifice so much. None of us asked to be palidans. None of us asked to be the defenders of the universe. But. You’re doing a really good job Lance. I’m proud of you. Thank you.” He clasps Lances shoulder gently. “Alright. Come one. Lets get to the healing station.”

Impressed . Shiro was impressed . Shiro ! The Shiro he had looked up to for years , the Shiro who has had so many more experiences than himself , the Shiro that was exposed to life outside Earth , the likes of the Galra Empire no less , for at least a year longer than he had . Lance …. kind of didn’t believe him . The words flew over his head , not making sense in his mind . Surely , Shiro could never be impressed with someone like him .
He smiled though , wide and true , the kind of charming , idiotic smile one would come to expect from Lance . Turning on his heel and depositing the food hose back into its holder , he trotted his way to the table and plonked himself down on the other side , facing his leader and pulling the spare plate closer . “ Thanks Shiro , that was fun . ”

Giving the other another glance over , Lance couldn’t help but find the look of Shiro still painted slightly with goop extremely amusing . Shoveling a spoonful of food into eager lips , he yanked the utensil free from caramel seams and pointed it towards the Black Paladin . “ You got a little somethin’ there and …. there . ”
⋆✦ - “Hhm?....Oh.” He’s actually a little embarrassed, wiping away at the goop with an easy smile. Shiro takes a spoonful of the goop and swallows easily. He had been back on earth for a few hours (Admittedly, unconscious, or restrained and frantically warning about the Galra) but hadn’t managed to have a bite of human food. He didn’t miss it, not really, but the goop left a lot to be desired. He would have liked to actually have something to chew instead of slurp. He had much bigger things to worry about on his interlude on earth though. The idea of the Galra invading earth, doing to it what they’d done to the whole galaxy...It had been so close. And now Shiro and the others were the only ones standing between the Galra and....everyone. It was a lot of pressure. There was a part of Shiro that was surprised at himself for not cracking under the pressure. Another part, a darker one, had resigned himself to death a long time ago. Facing enemies as a gladiator for the Galra...he never expected to make it out alive. He just hung on day by day in hopes he could help someone, anyone, do anything. And now....dying for the universe felt much better than dying for the Galra’s entertainment. No matter what, Shiro feels like he can be at peace with his future. But the others hadn’t fought for their lives for a year. “Lance.” His voice is softer. Shiro’s eyes flick up onto Lances, thinking. “Are you doing alright? I know...” He pauses, thinking exactly how he wants to say this. “I know a lot was just thrown on you. I show up on earth and suddenly, you’re leaving home. Defending the entire universe. I know the pressure. I know what it’s like to miss earth. I’m just.... How are you handling it?” Shiro know’s Lance enough to know he’s going to try to play this off, smile through it. Shiro wasn’t going to let it go so easily though.

⋆✦- “Oh. Yeah. I can see what you did there.” Shiro says, leaning over the back of Pidge’s chair and staring at the screen she’s currently tapping away at. Just for practice, Pidge is showing Shiro how to decode some of the patterns that are common in Altean technology. “So in theory we could use this same technique to understand some of the encrypted Galra messages.” He exhales impressed, and pats her shoulder. “You’re an absolute genius, Matt.” His hand falls from her shoulder, the warmth of the moment shattered and cold drips down Shiro’s spine. “....Pidge. You’re a genius, Pidge. I’m...sorry..” For just a split second, Shiro had been back with Matt, training before they launched for their mission. He closes his eyes briefly, and puts it behind him. “I don’t know what we’d do without you.”

He wonders what’s on the black paladin’s mind, what’s important enough to steal his sleep at a time when he desperately needs it. Shiro has been dragging lately. He might be trying to hide it from the rest of the team, but the subtleties fail to escape Keith’s watchful eyes: the slight droop of his shoulders, the faintly visible dark circles under his eyes, the lack of spring in his step even when he’s smiling.
Sometimes I get the impression that Shiro’s running on empty…
The war is taking its toll on all of them, but Keith has a feeling that it hits Shiro hardest of all. And it all makes sense. If he were to be suddenly thrust into a demanding leadership position with the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, Keith knows for sure he’d be a nervous wreck. Shiro is handling it pretty well, in his opinion.
“I know it’s a lot to handle. But if it’s worth anything, I think we’re doing alright… at this whole “defenders of the universe” thing, I mean.” A pause. He also wants to tell Shiro that he’s a great leader and that the fate of the universe could not possibly be in better hands. But even in his head, the words sound stressful so he keeps it to himself.
Before he can ask what exactly he’s been thinking about, Shiro moves closer, changes the subject with a fluidity that leaves no room for questions. At this distance, the exhaustion in his face is painfully obvious. You’re worried about the wrong person, Shiro. If only I could convince you to take care of yourself.
“I’m normally awake at this hour,” he confesses. And by normally, he means recently. Nightmares regarding a certain luxite blade have been plaguing his dreams lately, and the only way he can avoid them is by going to sleep when he’s absolutely spent. He refuses to let it affect his performance, however. He owes that much to the team. To Shiro.
He smiles, though it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “I’ll be alright. Can’t say the same for those Galra when we get to them, though.”
⋆✦ -“I think we’re doing more than alright.” He admits, warmth dancing through his eyes as he stars at Keith. It might be hard sometimes, being the strongest in the last line of defense against the Glara but...Shiro’s proud of his team. They’ve all come so far, and maintained so much goodness in them. Shiro’s not always sure that’s the case for himself. He feels different. He knows he’s different than the boy he flew to the stars with big dreams. Innocent. He still has dreams of waking up with yellow eyes, being the weapon they Galra tried to make him. Watching the universe fall to the Galra. Being part of that destruction. But, he’s still proud of Keith and the rest for not losing themselves. “I’m actually a little bit impressed. I don’t think I ever saw you talking with this many people at the Garrison- instructors don’t count.” Smiling at Keith is easy. Even if he reminds Shiro of a lifetime before, Keith is more of a lifeline than anything else now. He helps Shiro bridge the gap between who he was and who he is. “You should try to get more sleep.” Shiro is concerned. Keith has looked tired lately, he stands with his head bowed a little further down, muscles loose instead of his usual tense stance. Shiro doesn’t want the stress of the universe on Keith’s shoulders, even if that’s the way it has to be. Shiro will try and protect him for just a little bit longer. For as long as he can, anyway. “Is there anything on your mind?” They haven’t had the chance to do this often. To just be by themselves and talk. Keith isn’t big on sharing, but Shiro knows the weight of some things are just too big to keep to yourself. “You’ve been looking....worried lately. You know I’m here. If everything gets too much or if you just need someone to talk to.”
