Forgot it was reanimator day so here’s the original version of that one drawing I did a few years ago

thinking about canon-timeline danbert for once, no hallucinations or shipper goggles (hopefully). and it gets me over and over again that no matter now much of freak4freak recognition they have going on, they're always looking past each other into what they could be rather than what they are.

herbert sees dan as a scientist, an assistant, an accomplice. he knows that dan sees value in the work, and thinks that with the right push, he can get than to realize that potential; if he just gives dan the right incentive (saving everybody, bringing meg back, undoing their mistakes, etc), dan will snap and change into who herbert wishes he was. his 'flaws' (hesitation, 'tender-heartedness' or however you want to categorize dan's repulsion towards gore, distractability) are to be overcome. he makes a connection with dan because of this potential (bright, hard-working, well-connected), not necessarily out of any traits/behaviors dan currently posesses. there's certainly a part of dan that herbert geniuenly likes; he's entirely devoted to dan (and, imo, probably loves dan, for a given meaning of 'love'/what 'love' means to herbert), but i don't think that herbert likes who dan is as a whole very much. but the potential of who dan could be makes him stay, hoping that dan will be remade in the image of The Scientist wholly, not just partially. and that they can frolic together as freakish mad scientists whenever that happens

dan, in turn, sees herbert's potential for empathy, for being a real force for good. he sees herbert's devotion, his intelligence. herbert could be a genius that changes the world, (and perhaps this makes the atrocities worth it), herbert would do his best do give dan anything he wanted. but whenever herbert fails to be this savior figure and, instead, is just an amoral shithead with personal issues, dan is disappointed. even if 'a little cracked' and detached, herbert shouldn't be making tastless jokes about corpses/the patients, he shouldn't be fucking around with body parts for the sake of proving he can, he shouldn't be an addict. working with him is a series of disappointments, less so because the reagent fails to be perfect, but because herbert fails to be 'the scientist' too: good bedside manner, always logical, selfless. dan hopes that he can rein herbert in, counter-balance the worst parts of him, and maybe, eventually, break through to him.

they're at their best when being Scientists Working On A Project Together. then herbert cannot see dan's doubts, dan 'straying' to women, or dan's bleeding heart; dan cannot see herbert's personal failures or bad choices, herbert's Doing It For The Bit/Fucking Around To Find out can be justified as moving towards a grand noble goal. dan's ideal herbert is more apparent in the first movie, where dan keeps on defending herbert to people (including the herbert vs meg scene with what we could do dialogue), with dan becoming more jaded in bride, but there's traces of him in bride as well (in herbert offering dan meg's heart especially.) herbert's dan is just much of an idealized ghost as dan's meg is; and in the bride, herbert tries to bring out/make that idealized dan into a reality: to crack that shell by wholly involving dan in the work/binding him through 'marriage'.

they do both recognize the Freak in each other (with herbert being delighted and dan terrified) but beyond the work connecting them, they're always looking past each other into what the other could become. their ideas of their future(s) together are wholly incompatible, so despite the clear affection between them, they're doomed anyways. no matter the outside factors (dan's dates, the Atrocities and their consequences, hill, etc) they would still fall apart, because neither of them is ready to cope with the other one being a real, whole human being with 'flaws'/what they perceive to be flaws.

tldr: danbert is both of them going 'i could fix him' and their relationship runs on idealism in more ways than one

i feel that herbert is mischaracterized a lot as very stern and seriouse (and i admit i get sucked into this too in art/fics i make cus its easy to go overboard with the stereotypes) when in reality he is a freak ass ragebaiter who makes terrible puns at the worst moments and is also so pathetic and petty and always looks like a frightened small animal or a pouty twink. we dont give him enough credit for how sassy and just fucking hilarious and insane he is

edit: HE IS SERIOUS ABOUT STUFF and especially in his own head, just not the broody completely stone cold serious.
