Research Proposal
To:   Maria Almanza From: Stephanie Hogan Date: 1 April 2017 Subject: Research proposal
Title: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Dieting
Proposed Research Topic/Topic sentence: Dieting, fad diets, different types of diets, advantages of dieting, disadvantages of dieting
Moving from Research Topic to Assumptions: I am working on the topic of dieting because I want to find out how diets are helpful and hurtful to different types of people so, that I can help others understand the different effects of different diets on each individuals body
Research Questions: What are some of the advantages of dieting? What are some of the disadvantages of dieting? How can different diets effect different people? How do dieting companies belittle people about their size to sell their product? How big is the dieting industry?
Purposes: I chose this topic because I have personally tried many diets and I have had negative and positive outcomes with them. It interests me because I have a personal experience with many of these diets I hope to give answers to anyone who has questions about dieting I would also like to define any terms that could be confusing to someone who is just starting to diet. This issue is important to address because many people are going about dieting the wrong way. They are dieting very unhealthy which in the long run is not benefitting their bodies. Some people do not understand the consequences that come with unhealthy dieting. I think people will benefit from reading my paper because it will go into the harmful effects of dieting, and it will guide people to diet health. It will also delve into the advertisements of diets and hopefully will teach people that these adds are meant to make one feel insecure about their bodies so they will buy the diet product. The audience that I am going for is any person who is trying to learn more about healthy dieting. I will use sources like health mauals. I will also look into the diet plans of certain well-known diets.
Background: Dieting is a strict plan some people se to lose weight. Although some people know how to properly diet, many people are doing it all wrong. People are doing fad diets like weight watchers and the Atkins diet to lose weight. Some people are using the term “diet” as an excuse to stop eating totally. There are many options people have for dieting. They can do low carb, low fat, gluten free, and many others. The most important part of dieting is to make sure that it is benefiting your body.
Key Terms/concepts • Yo-Yo dieting: when you are dieting at one point and not at the other. This causes your weight to go up and down like a yo-yo • Fad diets: a diet that causes quick weight loss although it may not be healthy for your body • Weight loss: when you reduce the total body mass of your body • Diet: a strict plan one will follow to lose weight • Atkins Diet: this is a popular low carb eating plan. It restricts carbs but emphasizes proteins and fats • Weight Watchers: a diet in which you are given a point system and you have a certain number of points you are allowed daily.
Scope:  I will be focusing on diets that are used in everyday life today. I will use diets of the American culture and will study the habits American people have with diets.
Source Material: I am writing about advantages and disadvantages of dieting. I will look for credible scientific studies and medical journals that pertain to my topic. A few key word searches I may use are as follows: • Fad diets • Unhealthy eating plans • Disadvantages of dieting • Advantages of dieting • Different types of dieting • Healthy weight loss plans
Implications: I am hoping to gain a knowledge of healthy dieting when I am through with my research. I want to be able to know what types of diets are helpful to me and which types of diets are harmful to me. I want to be able to help anyone who needs guidance when they are trying to lose weight, but they are not sure what is the healthy way to do so.

My first topic of interest is Industrialized fishing. This topic interests me because I am big into fishing and I want to dive more into the bigger picture. I know my recreational hobby is not harming to the environment, but I want to learn more about the harmful effects of the industrialized version of one of my favorite hobbies. One direction this product could go in is the industrialized farming and fishing of Tilapia. Another direction could be delving into the lives of the industrial crab fishermen.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/01/170118163746.htm
My second topic of choice is the advantages and disadvantages of dieting. I am interested in this topic because I have tried many ways of dieting and seem to not be able to stick to the same one very well. I think there are many directions I could go with this topic, but the first could be the pros and cons of dieting supplements. Another direction could be talking about unhealthy ways of dieting or going over board when on a diet.
http://www.livestrong.com/article/410164-advantages-disadvantages-of-healthy-food-vs-junk-food/
My third topic is on food availability. Being that our university is in a so called “Food Desert” I think it would be interesting to talk about the availability of certain food in our area. One way I could discuss this is to talk about the different types of food available in certain communities and how we could help get more foods to certain neighborhoods. This problem could have many sub categories such as food desert, food affordability, food technologies.

The False “Truth” about GMOs
Genetically modified foods have been around for around thirty years, and people are still arguing about them. Genetically modified foods, also known as GMOs, have been tested by scientists for years. Jon Entine and JoAnne Wendel write in there essay that a study was done from the year 2002 to the year 2012 to see how harmful genetically modified foods are to humans and animals. Although this is only about one third of the genetically modified foods that have ever been produced, they could not find a single instance in which genetically modified foods have been harmful to humans or animals. Another issue people have with GMOs is “the safety of transcribed RNA from transgenic DNA.” Entine and Wendel ask the question, “Are scientists fiddling with the ‘natural order’ of life?” This answer to this is NO! human beings eat a small amount of DNA per day whether they are eating genetically modified food or not. The DNA is normally killed by the digestive tract and the acids throughout the tract. Entine and Wendel state that “No evidence was found that DNA absorbed through the GI tract could be integrated into human cells—a popular anti-GMO criticism.
I agree that genetically modified foods are not harmful to humans or animals, a point that needs emphasizing since so many people still believe that genetically modified foods are harmful to humans and animals. There is no evidence that GMOs are harmful. These genetic modifications are made to better the life and dexterity of the food. Ultimately, the scientists that are modifying the DNA of these foods are trying to better mankind. They are trying to find foods with better health advantages and maybe some foods that could cure terrible disease. In conclusion, Entine and Wendel state that, “The reason for the public’s distrust of GMOs lies in psychology, politics, and false debate.

Is it really their fault?
Author David Zinczenko writes in his essay “Don’t blame the Eater” about the struggles of eatng healthy in today’s on-the-go lifestyle. He says, “Before 1994, diabetes in children was generally caused by a genetic disorder—only about 5 percent of childhood cases was obesity-related, or Type 2, diabetes. Today, according to the National Institutes of Health, Type 2 diabetes accounts for at least 30 percent of all new childhood cases of diabetes in this country. He says the reason behind this is because when you drive up and down streets to find a quick meal, you will more than likely see one of the man McDonald’s, but will you ever see a restaurant where you can conveniently stop and get fruit? No!
I agree with Zinczenko! Yes, the children are the ones physically consuming the food, but how are they getting it? Their parents are in such a hurry to do the next thing on their daily list that they do not care what their children are putting into their bodies.
Another good point Zinczanko brings up is the fact that fast-food restaurants never give the nutritional information about their foods. These children have no clue what they are putting into their bodies. It might say “grilled” but who knows what type of grease, fats, and preservatives have been put into that product before it was grilled. Zinczanko says “Fast-foods are marketing to children a product with proven health hazards and no warning labels.” Although the children are the actual consumers of the terrible food, they should not be at fault because they have no understanding of what type of ingredients are in each fast-food product.

In the documentary The Codes of Gender, Sut Jhally shows us many “Codes of Gender” made known by Erving Goffman. A few terms used throughout the documentary are as follows: Gender display, codes and cultural codes. Gender display is when a certain individual from a gender acts like society thinks they should. Code is a way of talking to someone, and cultural codes is a way of reaching out to a certain culture by something like advertising.
Advertisements are some of the most popular ways of selling an item or idea in today’s world. The various poses, positions, and body languages involved in certain advertisements make them more appealing or more appalling to certain people or genders. Goffman portrays women as being weak and helpless in his advertisement. While men, on the other hand are shown as being very manly and strong. Women are also portrayed as being very delicate while men are the hard workers in the world. Overall, Goffman portrays women as being very vulnerable and weak, and the men are the ones who need to keep them in the right path. Men are portrayed as superior and women are considered to be inferior.
In Goffman’s eyes, women are below men. Women are the delicate helpful people in the society, and the men are the workers and productive people. Women are extremely downgraded in Goffman’s advertisement about “Codes of Gender.”

The stereotypes of African-American people loving fried chicken have been around for decades. In “Suckin’ the Chicken Bone Dry” Psyche Williams-Forson uses stories and personal events to share the growth of the stereotypes. Tphis stereotype originates from the origin of the actual dish. Williams- Forson says,
“Initially, it seems these stereotypes involving Black people’s affinity for chicken began as ideologies shaped from laws and ordinances passed during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries ass a way to control the economic gain of enslaved and free men and women who bartered and traded in the marketplace.”
The African-American slaves would sell chickens that they received from their masters at market to try to make enough money to support their families. Eventually, the white people were threatened by the success of the African-American people. The African-American people were selling at markets, going door-to-door to sell items, and were actually participating in political events.
“In an attempt to subjugate Blacks and conjure memories of the Ole’ South. White Americans vented their anger using artifacts of visual media like brochures, pamphlets, trading cards, greeting cards, and food products. Emerging from this ‘new White backlash’ was an ideology of Black inferiority, which prompted the formulation of racist stereotypes.”
The scenarios described by Williams-Forson shows how important the power of relationships were during this time. These relationships are what kept the African-American people sane during these tough times in history. The family relationships they had were the only relationships they had! Many mothers would cook fried chicken, and this would give the family a feeling of safety and security through these times.

The Search for General Tso
GENERAL TSO CHICKEN. This is an authentic Chinese dish, right? WRONG! This dish a 100% Americanized dish created by Chinese-American chefs to meet the specific tastes Americans have. This specific taste Americans have is described in the Netflix original movie “The Search for General Tso” as sweet, tangy, and salty. IF you look around America, almost all Chinese restaurants have this dish, but if you were to take a trip to China you would quickly realize that this specific way of cooking chicken is unknown to almost all Chinese people. General Tso did not invent, and along with most other Chinese people wouldn’t have even eaten this dish. Chinese people are into a tarter taste, but General Tso chicken is a very sweet tasting dish.
The Chinese restaurant came to America during the time of the California Gold Rush. Many Chinese people came to America to try to find wealth and prosperity for their families, but were quickly shot down by the Chinese Exclusion Act. This act limited immigration into America, so there was a lot of discrimination toward the Chinese people which made it very hard for these people to get jobs.  This act was passed mostly because American people saw the Chines as a threat to their wealth and business. Because of this act, many Chinese people opened restaurants and laundry mats. At first, the mainstream people found Chinese food scary, and they did not want to eat it. Some Chinese restaurants were vandalized, and one Chinese restaurant in particular was bombed before it could even open. The Chinese chefs thought that if they could just Americanize their foods they would be able to prosper in America. We see today that this worked. Although Chinese people are about only 1% of the population, there are thousands upon thousands of Chinese restaurants all around the globe.

For some southern folk hunting is a loved pastime. Saturday I sat down with my dad and talked about his most memorable meal, which happened on a week-long hunting trip in the National Forest. • Fresh deer meat • Home-made biscuits • Potatoes • Carrots • Onions • Homemade strawberry preserves for the biscuits My father sat down and talked to me about his most memorable meal. It happened about 30 years ago. Him, his father, and a few other men went on a hunting/camping trip deep in the woods of the National Forest. The morning before the meal they went for a hunt and killed a deer so they could have meat for dinner. They brought all the sides, but without the deer the meal would be ruined. What made this meal so memorable was the fact that all the wives came and ate with their husbands. The men had to drive to the bottom of the mountain to get the ladies because their cars could not make it up the mountain. Once they all got to the top of the mountain the men started to cook while the ladies stargazed. This was the first time the women had ever been up to the mountain, and this trip had been a tradition for over ten years. As my father was telling this story I could see the joy and excitement in his eyes. I could tell that this was a tradition that he would never forget as long as he lived. One of his favorite pastimes is hunting, and to be able to do it with his father and eat dinner the same night with the love of his life was one of the best days of his life. This meal was not just a meal to my father. It was a moment in his life that he felt incredibly grateful for family, friends, and his favorite pastime.
