What do they think it is?

I'm not sure. But many comments and tags either directly say they don't know what emancipation is, or state things that directly contradict how emancipation works. Mostly things like "Yes," followed by "X should get custody." Emanciaption means a minor is considered legally an adult. NO ONE gets custody. That's not a "yes."

Most people seem to be taking it as "Should they become a foster kid," not "Are they better off surviving on their own?"

Experimented on him, allowed his brothers to beat him up, regularly pushed him to his physical limits, faked his son's death and kept him locked in a fucking dungeon with a mask over his head?? and that's just the shit he did in his childhood, not even looking at WCI. Prospero told her nothing about where she came from or life at all outside of their island, where he enslaved multiple people and sprites, including her (Miranda’s) crush as a reverse-psychology way of setting them up, he caused a fake shipwreck in front of her, making her think her father just killed a crew of like 10 people, and also used his magic to make her fall asleep instead of answering her question (SINGULAR)

Reason:

They have quite literally been absent for a lot of Teru's life. They just go on business trips constantly and leave him to fend for himself completely alone as a child, which is bad enough on its own, but worse when you throw in the fact that he was being targeted by an evil organisation.
