been seeing some people here (and other platforms) ask if it's worth watching old smosh vids or if it's just "all bad"--esp after court's song in the ssg promposal finale. and as an older smosh fan, i'd say there are a fair share of enjoyable vids from that era.

let's be clear, parts of smosh (and the fandom) aged like milk. the women/femme-presenting were overly sexualized. people had to eat ghost peppers on multiple occasions. a team in ssg had to walk on mousetraps BAREFOOT and blindfolded. olivia was pressured to go on a giant waterslide even though she couldn't swim and was SUPER anxious about it (all on camera, btw). noah got hypothermia from having to play just dance outside in the WINTER. not to mention being constantly overworked by higher-ups who cared more about dollar-signs than their employees.

the punishment-era of smosh was a product of its time. for whatever reason, we liked to see people in pain/uncomfortable/grossed out on the internet. people forget that up until covid, the internet was so different.

with that being said, there were plenty of non-punishment-based videos from the defy era. bc i def don't want this to turn into "if you like old smosh you're problematic", esp since 'old smosh' is a pretty broad term and can be broken down into diff eras (unfortunately, throughout all those eras people would still scream for the 'old smosh' back).

video series i would recommend is the "show w/ no name," which displays the smosh cast at their best (at that time). just a chill time on a couch that gave birth to some of the funniest bits. the old "Damien and Shayne show" was very popular on the games channel, and when fans fell in love with the shaymien friendship. "smosh and order" can, arguably, be named as smosh's first official improv series and is very, very funny

i'd also recommend the old smoshcast from 2019 that ian hosted. various cast members got to air out their grievances about defy post-shutdown. some episodes have more tea than others (the first ep being a BIG one, along with the eps during ssg apocalypse), so i'd recommend of you wanna know more about the defy debacle.

AND even though a 'certain' former producer wasn't great--and part of the reason old smosh members were pushed out of the channel--the one thing he did do right was pitching SSG/SWG, because it tore down the divide between the diff channels brough everyone together. which is why it is such a staple in smosh history.

all this to say, give some old smosh videos a try if you're thinking about it. there were so many diff kinds of content were putting out. to reiterate, i'm SO glad to see smosh where it is now and that they've outgrown punishments. but there were also some genuine bangers in the last 10ish years, even some of the older cast would acknowledge. and if you still don't like it, thats okay!
