floored upon reread that we only learn about vikki's backstory in you'll all be sorry, e.g. in the last third of the total page count, considering how central her brutalization at the hands of three classmates is to the narrative. we as readers have no particular reason to believe that hunter faced any consequences, legal or otherwise, for having almost beaten his classmate to death. by context clues and his continued presence in the town where they both grew up and where he works, we can assume that he remained in the same high school; from the fact that she sees him in the funeral home a few years later, we can assume that he did not face prison charges and was not ostracized by his family. vikki, on the other hand, was placed into alternative school and subsequently fired.
hunter acts as milo's counterpart on many levels; no responsibility-taking is required of him at all; vikki summarizes it quickly as "he's either sorry or he's not, and i'm pretty sure he's not". his actions are neither criminalised like griffin nor psychiatrized like milo, an unlikable offputting trans person. milo's crime - mutilating an already-dead body under threat of physical harm - is bad enough for his entire life to be upturned and for him to be expected to vanish from public life (physically in the ward, then online); hunter's crime is mundane enough to go undercover until much later, with vikki not being allowed to bring it up earlier or even react to his presence at her own workplace. hunter's (interesting name!) violence is unremarkable, a fact of life, worthy at best of a slap on the wrist. it is in the order of things

Last one for tonight. This is by @maximumgraves , who is on tumblr and the rest of the usual SMs. If you’re not familiar with him, max creates the webcomic What Happens Next and other very cool zines and comics. You should go check him out!
This one is my favourite commissions - I have it printed and framed on my wall. The brief was ‘Vikki and Xandra as Mulder and Scully’ and Max has completely nailed it - their expressions are just perfect.

dick makes people mentally ill. dick havers, dick wannabes and dick lovers are all insane. it's like toxoplasmosis, you have compulsive need to defend and push and worship dicks all the time and spead your dick mania to everywhere you go.
this seems rational and grounded in empirical evidence

“Our gov lied to us! Look at the content on RedNote! Things are wonderful in China and their people are all living their best lives!”
The fact that you are so (rightfully) deeply suspicious of your own gov but couldn’t seem to apply the same caution when it comes to a totalitarian regime tells me absolutely everything I need to know about you: you’re a gullible idiot.
And before you come at me with your “you’re just a xenophobic white person” nonsense, just know I’m Taiwanese and every single last one of my Chinese friends have been calling you guys clowns and brainwashed idiots for the past 16 hours.
Oh, you don’t see that kind of content on RedNote? It’s because they post those in their private 朋友圈.

If I see one more naive white queer speaking over actual Chinese queers people and proclaiming xiaohongshu/rednote or even China in general is somehow a fucking wonderland incapable of violent bigotry I’m gonna explode
Tumblr media
1) a lot of the queer related tags have suddenly become usable again after the great migration
2) the #le tag for lesbians literally comes from the #lesbian and #les tags being banned so to act
3) the welcome you’re receiving by chinese people isn’t what actual Chinese queers have experienced (we experience a bombardment of loud angry homophobes/transphobes every single fucking day) and every single Chinese queer I know has been ranting about this for days. Unfortunately a lot of people are hypocrites who are only nice to the guests in the house
4) not only is this rhetoric of don’t ask don’t tell being the main consensus in China FALSE (I don’t even want to get into the media’s suppression of hate crimes and how many queer activism accounts are being banned left and right), passive queerphobia is still FUCKING QUEERPHOBIA…
The audacity to come into OUR HOUSE and speak over us after 3 days of being pampered on this app just for being western is vile and so fucking demoralising because we’ve been yelling about our condition for so long and you guys would rather not miss out on social media brainrot than to actually apply some nuance for once… you guys wanted to distance from the sinophobic propaganda take of China being unequivocally evil so bad that you’ve swung to the other end

Can I be real with u guys for a moment re: the Xiaohongshu/Rednote migration
Firstly let me say the good points. I love how bipoc users are educating the Chinese people about racial issues in America. I love how queer people are steadfast and so tough and strong in facing queerphobia. I love how Chinese people and American people are doing a culture exchange and understanding each other more. I got into a transmasc group chat and it has been so nice to chat with them.
HOWEVER it has been a generally frustrating experience for me on Xiaohongshu recently. I hate seeing the blatant ignorant display from Han Chinese about what people from minority ethnicities go through. I hate how they say "There is no skin color based discrimination in China" when I've seen videos of blasian kids talking about being bullied and I know what the Black diaspora in Guangzhou go through and I've seen the slurs and racism on bilibili (I'm Han Chinese so I can't really tell you the specifics, sorry). I hate seeing Chinese gold-star lesbians saying rednote is "The Most Queer Friendly App" while I (transgender) had to see their blatant transphobia before this. I hate how people say "There are no queer hate crimes" when there was literally a lesbian couple that was beaten to death in HongKong recently!!! I also know if you get read as male while being feminine you go through a lot of hardship in China, a trans woman literally wrote about her horrendous experiences in employment and there was another trans woman who had to literally sue her employers for firing her because she used the women's bathroom!!! The general culture on Xiaohongshu or Rednote was known for being elitist and classicist among Chinese people and being transphobic for queer Chinese people for a long time (before this)!!!
I by no means am against the new wave of American and global users, but just be mindful, okay? We all have our cultural baggage, and internet culture is a reflection and part of that!
