Constructivism explained on five principles
The Building Machine, The compositional Freedom, Economy, Symbol, Expression.*
The building above is the Kushelevskiy Bakery by George Marsakov, 1932. It explains perfectly the Building Machine, one of the five principles of Constructivism era, merges form and function and reflects the beauty of engineering production scheme in its facades.
These buildings are powerfull, from their conceptualization, their functionality, to details. Most of them need conservation, other ones were abandoned and some others were sadly demolished following the lack of interest from authorities to preserve buildings that are part of architecture’s history. A lot of them are unknown for the world even much of them were inspiration for the most recognized architects now.
* Please take a look through this article written by Alexander Selivanov explaining five principles defining constructivism era with less known buildings and its different typologies: the factory, club, residential homes, factories-kitchens and theater.
