Jinshi: Am I ugly? Am I no longer pretty?
Maomao: *with big doe eyes* No babe you're so much hotter. Not despite of the scar but because of it

Jinshi: Letting Maomao leave was the hardest thing I've ever done . . . I will be mourning her the rest of my life, but it was the right thing to do. I had to let her be free, even if it costs me my own happiness
Maomao: I can't believe that bitch ass pervert fired me, what the fuck

I need to talk about this panel because I think its so funny and sweet

Her saying that she figured this will end when Anya graduates implies that even before Yor realized that she wanted to stay in this family forever, she was totally down to play pretend for 12 years.
Yor is so unhinged. Initially, Loid only asked her to do this for the school interview. But Yor was instantly ride or die for this family she just met and was willing to commit 12 years of her life to the bit. She's willing to do anything to help people (including murder) and so nice to a fault. Yor is such an unhinged icon honestly.

I had an idea for a whole essay on why Maomao is quicker to accept affection from Loulan/Shisui than from Jinshi and how that's a reflection of her being raised in the pleasure district by courtesans and thus viewing affection from women as a given and natural thing to receive and give but at the same time viewing affection between men and women as transactional and something men have to pay to get and women offer as a product but I prefer to just enjoy the doom yuri while it lasts instead

Thinking about Suirei again…. She’s literally so iconic.
She took Medicine That Kills You For Ten Minutes and walked it off like a champ. She kidnapped Maomao and gave her a stack of medical textbooks to distract her, like a parent giving their toddler cocomelon. She’s so androgynous everyone thinks she’s a dude when she wears men’s clothes. She keeps wearing men’s clothes even after going into hiding. She’s deathly afraid of snakes because her shitty stepmother threw her into a pit of them for probably no reason. She has no friends. She is one of three people in the entire series who were able to outsmart Maomao. She makes one attempt at a joke and when it doesn’t work never tries again. Maomao is *very* interested in her intelligence and medical knowledge, which weirds her out. She got locked in a closet during one of her stepmother’s orgies. Her half-sister loved her so much she took her original birth name as a fake name while spying. She loves said sister more than anything else.
She tried to assassinate Jinshi. She’s so pretty, when she shows up disguised as a eunuch she ends up becoming legitimate competition to Jinshi’s beauty. She’s Jinshi’s cousin. Did I mention she’s hot as fuck.

The Roof Dance: Maomao vs. Shisui
(Spoilers) While I don’t feel like the light novel presented Shisui’s exit as a prolonged “dance” like the anime did, I thought it was interesting how parallels could be drawn between her final dance and Maomao’s of the season one finale. Whether this is intentional or not, who knows, but I couldn’t help but think about it watching Shisui’s exit.

Both danced on a roof of sorts, under the stars, it was a send off (Maomao for her mother, Shisui for herself) and Jinshi was present for both. To me it’s the details in how they differ that are fascinating.

Maomao’s dance marks the beginning of her mother’s life as a wife and no longer a courtesan. Shisui’s marks the end of her life as the doll of the Shi Clan. Jinshi arrives at the end of Maomao’s dance and is able to catch her when she falls. He is present for all of Shisui’s dance but does not attempt to catch her, as he realizes her dance is the finale to her family’s performative end.

Their roles are also reversed. Where Maomao looks like a normal woman on a daily basis, she takes this opportunity to wear makeup and doll herself up. Shisui on the other hand is used to being presented as a consort so is covered in makeup, unmarred and beautiful but as she’s dancing she’s got blood on her and is dirty from the explosions.

To me all of this can point to the differences in the two women, where Maomao’s life is marked by beginnings and Shisui’s is marked by endings. Shisui is freed by her “death” and Maomao is freed by embracing the changes life brings moving forward. Just my thoughts, could be totally off but I kept thinking about it when seeing the final dance.

Memo for Episode 22 “Royal Guard”
Roran “Fufu…, Nee-sama’mo onaji-yona-koto itte-ta. Sodane. So-dayo-ne. Kitto Nee-sama’mo, watashi’no Nee-sama-ja nain-dawa.”
Loulan “Yes, that’s similar to what my sister said. Yes, you’re right. My sister probably isn’t really my sister, either.”
そだね(Soda-ne): soft, child-like way of saying “そうだね”, sometimes used by girls or young people.
(So-dayo-ne.): almost the same as そうだね, but a little stronger.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Maomao (Uso tsuke. Konna kao’o sareru-to, yoku niteru. Shisui’wa, ane’de-aru Suirei’o shitatte-iru. Dakara, konna jokyo’ni nattemo mu-kankei-dato kabatte-iru. Demo, sonna rikutsu’wa tsuji-nai. Suirei’wa, kore-made’no jiken’ni kakawari-sugite-iru.)
Maomao (Lies. When she makes this face, they look really similar. Shisui really loves her sister, Suirei. That’s why, even after all that’s happened, she claims they’re unrelated, to protect her. But that logic won’t work at all. Suirei is far too involved in all of the incidents that have happened so far.)
(Uso-tsuke.): You’re lying! You’re kidding! Don’t lie.
I don’t know why, but うそつけ grammatically means “Lie,” but actually means “Don’t lie.”
Shitau): (Normally lower person) admire, love with respect (higher person)
Rikutsu): logic, reason, theory
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Roran “Iji-dayo, watashi’no.”
Loulan “I have my own pride.”
意地(いじ/Iji): In this case “pride” works well, but 意地 is not the same as 誇り(ほこり/Hokori): pride. “誇り/Pride” is always used positively, but 意地 is often used negatively. 意地 means your own strong will that you cannot give up or throw away, but it might be seen just as stubbornness by others.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Rahan “Chichi-ue…, tatoeba, ko-zoku’ni te’o ageta-baai, tsumi’ni towareru-nowa to-nin-dake-desho-ka?”
Lahan “Father, theoretically, if you were to treat an imperial family member that way, would you be the only one punished for it?”
Te’o ageru): strike, hit, raise one’s hand against
The phrase has other meanings, such as “raise one’s hand” just to speak.
Lahan knows well how to deal with Lakan, and warned him that his sins will befall his beloved daughter and uncle. I like very much how, despite being a weirdo, Lakan dotes on his daughter.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Jinshi “Kizuite-ita-ka? Jinshi’to watashi’ga do-itsu-jinbutsu’de aru-to.”
Jinshi “Did you realize that Jinshi and I were the same person?”
Do-itsu-jin-butsu): the same person
Rahan “Ee. Se-take, tai-ju, mune-mawari, do-mawari, subete onaji suji’no Ningen-nado, so-so ori-masen. Taihen uruwa-shiku, josei’de nai-noga zan’nen-desu.”
Lahan “Yes. Height, weight, chest, waist… It’s quite rare for two people to have the exact same measurements. You are extremely beautiful. Unfortunate that you weren’t born a woman.”
Lahan apparently see many things in numbers. The La clan is full of eccentrics who excel at one thing, and this will probably be explained in more detail in Season 3 onwards if there is a sequel to the anime.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Rakan “Fufu, soroban-atama’mo, ko itte-iru.”
Lakan “Or so our math-head thinks.”
Soro-ban): abacus
Needless to say, Lahan is good at math. He always carries an abacus on his waist or in his hand, but Maomao says he can do all his calculations in his head without it.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Roran “Oto-sama. Saigo-kurai, sekinin’o totte-kudasai.”
Loulan “Father. As a final act, take responsibility for once in your life.”
Saigo-kurai): at least at the end
〇〇くらい/〇〇ぐらい(~Kurai/~Gurai): usually it means “about/more or less 〇〇”, but it can mean “at (the very) least” depending on the context.
Roran “Kate-nu aite-to wakatte-ita-hazu-desu. Oto-sama…, Okaa-sama’wa watashi’ga mitodoke-masu-kara.”
Loulan “You knew we had no chance to win. Father. I will see Mother off.”
Mi-todokeru): see/watch something/someone to the end, see through, see off
This word suggests that Shenmei will soon die or be somewhere far away that is out of reach.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Rihaku “Konna tondemo-nee saku’ga umaku-iku-towa… Shikashi, kyu-tei’demo tanuki-oyaji-to iwareta Shisho’ga, konna basho’ni tate-komoru-nante, baka-na mane’o suru-mono-kanee.”
Lihaku “Who’d have thought this tactic would go so well… Also, who’d have thought Shishou, known for his wiles in the palace, would make the mistake of holing up in a place like this.”
(Tondemo-nai): unbelievable, outrageous
I prefer this line in the original Japanese novel; 「とんでもねえことやらかすな」と李白(リハク)は思(おも)った。/Lihaku thought, “Hey, they did this outrageous!”
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Jinshi “Ko-zoku’ga hikiiru Kin-Gun’ga toru saku’ni, fusawashiku-nai-to omou-mono’mo iru-daro. Daga, jigun’no higai’o osaeru’niwa, kono saku’ga mottomo yoi. So watashi’ga handan-shita. Kyo’o tsuku saku-tono soshiri’wa, watashi’ga ukeru!”
Jinshi “Some may think this is not the strategy befitting the royal guard, a proud force led by an imperial family member. However, this is the best strategy to minimize our casualties. That is my decision. I will accept any criticism that it is a sneak attack!”
Soshiri): criticism, slander, vilification, calumny
His speech as the imperial brother was so dignified that everyone there could realize that he was a capable and respectable younger brother of the emperor. This must have come as a huge shock to people, along with the shock of discovering that Jinshi a eunuch and the imperial brother were the same person.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Maomao (Are’wa… Masaka-na…, konna tokoro’ni iru-wake-nai. Sugu-ni Kin-gun’ga haitte-kuru. Koko’ni-iru watashi’mo, Shi’no-ichi-zoku’no ningen-dato omoware-kane-nai. Dakedo……)
Maomao (Is that…? No way. There’s no way he would be here. The royal guard will arrive any moment now. I might get mistaken as a member of the Shi clan if I stay here. But…)
Before the anime started, I read this part in the original web novel, and at least at that point, this was the scene where Maomao found out that Jinshi was the imperial brother. The scene where Jinshi fought wearing a purple armor and with his hair tied up in a knot was beautifully described, and I got goosebumps when I read it. And Jinshi did not meet Maomao in person, but only found out that she had been rescued when Lihaku sounded the whistle, and was truly relieved. I really liked those scenes, so I was honestly disappointed when I read the published original novel. It was good that the scene where Maomao and Jinshi met was added, but I wished the reunion had been a little more dramatic. After that, when I reread the web novel, the content had been changed to match the published novel, and I was sad the scenes I liked had disappeared. Well, this is just my personal opinion…
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Maomao “Jinshi-sama, fuketerun-desu-ne.”
Maomao “Master Jinshi, you’re younger than you look.”
I don’t know the actual nuance of this English line, but if I translate original Japanese line into English directly, it means “You look older than your actual age,” which is clearly an insult. Maomao, just imagine how determined Jinshi must have come here to rescue you! Is there nothing else you can say? I really feel sorry for Jinshi… In the original novel, it is written as “Although she spoke in a small voice, Jinshi glanced at her, looking a bit annoyed.” So, she might have just talking to herself, including some regret or excuse that she hadn’t realized who he was until that moment.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Rihaku “Soka… Iki-nokottemo, ichi-zoku’wa matomete kei’ni sho-sareru. Onna, kodomo’mo kankei-nai. Yari-kire-nee-na.”
Lihaku “I see. Even if they did survive, they’d all be executed. Women, children, it doesn’t matter. I don’t like it.”
(Yari-kire-nai): unbearable, frustrating
This word refers to the feeling you get when something very sad or painful happens, but there is nothing you can do about it.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Rihaku “O. Hitotsu, ii te’ga aru-zo. Omae’ga ano ossan’o papa-to-demo yon-dara, nan-demo iu-koto… N! Suman. Ima-nowa nashi-da…”
Lihaku “Oh, I know! Just go up to that old guy and call him “Papa” or something. He’ll let you― Sorry, never mind.”
パパ(Papa): Of course this word is from English. There are many way to call your father in Japanese, and the most common one is “お父さん(おとうさん)”. But the pronunciation is a bit difficult for children who are just beginning to speak, so many children start with “Papa” for father, and “Mama” for mother. Some people continue to call their fathers “Papa” even as adults, but this may make them seem childish.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
In this episode, we were first shown the state of mind of Shishou, whose thoughts were completely unknown until now. Of course, Shenmei (and the late emperor) are the ones most to blame for this tragedy, but if there was anyone who could have prevented it, it would have been only Shishou. Yet he didn’t even realize that Suirei was being abused, and he didn’t imagine what Loulan, who acted like a doll, really felt and thought. If a god-like being, the late emperor begged him “Please make my daughter your wife,” he couldn’t refuse. In exchange, he could have made Shenmei his wife, so it was inevitable that Shenmei would go crazy with jealousy and anger. However, even if it was too late, he could have talked to Loulan out of Shenmei’s sight after she entered the rear palace. He is probably a good person who is sincere and loyal, but he was unable to stop Shenmei, and Loulan ended up taking on that difficult role instead, which is so sinful.
It's really unfortunate that there will be no broadcast this week at this climax, but this is due to the circumstances of the TV station, and is not the fault of the anime production company. I believe that Season 2 will cover the end of vol.4 of the original novel. One more episode probably won’t be enough time, so I guess there are two more episodes left.

#007 - #008 - #009 - The tails of the Squirtle line are made of sea foam, storing air for long dives. They prefer staying at shores and spraying water on random passersby for amusement.
Sponsored by @la-bruja. Design process under read more.
So for this line I had three main goals: 1. Add some more aquatic turtle anatomy on the line. 2. Make their shells based on sea shells, so that i can introduce the blastoise cannons as the shells openings, almost like a siphon. 3. the very popular "put that fur back into the blastoise.
So for my studies i started with studying both a turtle with flippers and one without, and then applying those on my squirtles to see which one worked best. To avoid overlap with the titouga line, I decided to go with the snaked neck turtle as inspiration, but i brought some of the pig nosed turtle's nose to the line because its cute
The tails turning into some sea foam-y subsance and the fur ending up looking more like gills came later, to tie down random parts of the design into a more water related theme, instead of it just being a water type because its a blue turtle. also it storing oxygen is a reference to turtles breathing outta their ass btw. they do that
The rest just came from me enjoying drawing turtles and making it as accurate as i could without losing the whimsy

First of all, THANK YOU FOR READING!!
I remember drawing this with the sole purpose of angst and exploring Loid’s inner turmoil about his “fake” family that he, in fact, loves very much lol. This is one of my favorite comics I have done and I hope you guys like it too if you haven’t seen it before.
