Serengeti National Park
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serengeti National Park is Africa’s most famous destination. The wildebeest migration and high concentration of predator species is what attracts visitors to Tanzania. The huge expanse of archetypal African Savannah stretches for about 15,000 sq kilometres. The Greater Serengeti ecosystem is about twice that large which includes several small reserves and the Masai Mara in Kenya! There is very little permanent water in Tanzania’s largest National Park, so the Migration and general location of the most of the animals is linked to rainfall patterns. The non-stop parade of over a million wildebeest, a quarter of a million zebra and numerous Thompson’s gazelles. Big cats and other predators follow the migration through their territories.
Tumblr media
Migration in the Serengeti The wildebeest migration, like a discernible thread, embraces and connects the Serengeti’s ecosystem much as it has done for at least two millions years. January, February and March – As the short rains have fallen on the southern plains of the Serengeti Seronera and northern reaches of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area the migration spreads out in vast herds, often over 10,000 animals, for calving season. April, May and June – By the end of April the countless animals and the new offspring begin to congregate south of the Western Corridor in preparation for the lengthy northwards migration of over 800km. One huge single endless herd, a column of animals up to 40km long and several wide is the famous spectacle known over the world. The animals’ dangerous crossing of the Grumeti River normally occurs at the end of June, sometimes in July. It can take up to two weeks for the herd to cross and many ungulates lives are lost to the ravenous crocodiles. July, August and September – The wildebeest congregate again in the Western Corridor after crossing the river. The herds then disperse northwards making Lobo the best place to view the migration at this time of year. About half will cross the Mara River entering the Masai Mara in Kenya. October, November and December – By the end of October the animals tend to gather together for the long slow trek southwards again aiming for the southern plains as the short rains begin in November. When to visit Serengeti National park The Serengeti’s climate is warm and dry. TSerengeti experiences the tropical rainy season from March through to May, and a short rainy season from October to November. After the rainfall, the park becomes lush and green, but steadily dries up over time which encourages the inhabitants of this park to migrate in search of waters and fodder. With altitudes ranging from 920 to 1,830 metres average temperatures vary from 15 degrees to 26 degrees Celsius. The coldest temperatures are experienced from June to October. Read the full article

7 Days Machame Route Itinerary
$ 1750 7 Days
Tumblr media
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,350 ft Distance: 11 km/7 miles Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rain Forest The drive from Arusha to the Machame Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. As we leave the park gate, we walk through the dense rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until we reach the Machame Camp. Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp Elevation: 9,350 ft to 12,500 ft Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Heath We leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path up to a steep, rocky ridge. On the Shira Plateau, we pass through heather and open moorlands, then cross a large river gorge to Shira 2 Camp. Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft Distance: 7 km/4 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert We continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. We descend down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although you begin and end the day at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude is very beneficial for acclimatization. Lava Tower to Barranco Camp Elevation: 15,190 ft to 13,044 ft Distance: 3 km/2 miles Hiking Time: 2-3 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert We begin the day by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Then we climb the non-technical but steep, nearly 900 ft cliff. From the top of the Barranco Wall we cross a series of hills and valleys until we descend sharply into Karanga Valley. One more steep climb up leads us to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day meant for acclimatization. Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft Distance: 4 km/2 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert We leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are viewable from this position. Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 7-8 hours Habitat: Arctic Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), you  will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp Elevation: 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft Distance: 12 km/7 miles Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Rain Forest From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft Distance: 10 km/6 miles Hiking Time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Rain Forest On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate and collect the summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel in Arusha. Four days climbing mount meru

4 DAY MOUNT MERU CLIMBING
4 Days Climb Mount Meru
Tumblr media
Signature safari*Mount Meru is an often overlooked, but spectacular volcano located in the center of Arusha National Park. Standing at 14,980 feet, Mount Meru often serves as a preparatory hiking destination to Mount Kilimanjaro, or can be a standalone hiking point in itself. As opposed to some routes of Kilimanjaro, the only route in here is free from crowd and a solitary, peaceful trek is possible. Accommodations are arranged in wood huts. The lower reaches of the mountain and central area of the park, near to the mountain offer a significant game viewing experience. You’ll be accompanied by an armed ranger on the first stage who will ensure your safety. The trail to the top will follow the crater’s north rim along a ridgeline. Once at the summit, the views of the Meru crater and Mount Kilimanjaro which is far away are mesmerizing. Signature safari* offers Mount Meru as a four day private climb. However, both tourists and operators are often times combined in a group together to walk behind the armed ranger on the lower mountain slopes. Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Huts We depart Moshi or Arusha for Momella Gate in Arusha National Park for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. The hiking trail begins in open grassland with an armed ranger as the possibility of seeing wildlife – giraffe, zebras, antelope, elephant and buffalo – is high. Our climb will continue on through the rainforests until we reach the Miriakamba Hut which is situated in a grassy forest glade. Elevation: 4,921 ft to 8,250 ft Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Rain Forest Day 2: Miriakamba Huts to Saddle Huts We continue climbing through the rain forest until we enter the heath zone accompanied by giant heather and other moorland vegetation. Along the ridge of the saddle, we have views of Mount Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. After arriving at Saddle Huts, there is an option to hike to the top of Little Mount Meru for superb views and to further aid acclimatization. Elevation: 8,250 ft to 11,712 ft Distance: 8 km Hiking Time: 3-5 hours Habitat: Heath Day 3: Saddle Huts to Summit. Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our climb to the summit. The trail is steep to Rhino Point and then Cobra Point. The path continues along the ridge of ash and rock to the summit - Socialist Peak. Here we enjoy magnificent views of Kilimanjaro and the sunrise before returning to Miriakamba Huts. Elevation: 11,712 ft to 14,977 ft Distance: 5 km Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Summit to Miriakamba Huts Elevation: 14,977 ft to 8,250 ft Distance: 13 km Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Heath Day 4: Miriakamba Huts to Momella Gate. On our last day, we descend quickly through the tropical rainforest to Momella Gate. At the base of the mountain, our vehicle will meet us and drive us back to the hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Elevation: 11,712 ft to 4,921 ft Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 2-4 hours Habitat: Rain Forest Includes Excludes Hotel lodging the night before and the night after the climb (dinner and breakfast included) (double occupancy). 13 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Safari and Zanzibar Beach Holiday

A Zanzibar tour is an excellent way to relax after trekking Kilimanjaro or a tiring wildlife safari. We, at Signature Safari, offer an all inclusive 6 days Kilimanjaro Climb, 6 days safari, and 5 days of Zanzibar gateway in a single package with four different types of accommodations to choose from. Day 1: Arrive in Arusha: Arrive anytime at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), there will be a private transfer waiting at the airport to pick you to Arusha Safari Lodge in Arusha. Dinner and overnight at Arusha Safari Lodge: Half board. Day 2: Arrive in Marangu: We stay at Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort, which is a beautiful Hotel located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and is a perfect place to prepare you for adventure. We will gather in the evening at 5:30 pm for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance. Dinner and overnight at Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort: Half board. Day 3: Rongai Camp One: After an early breakfast in Marangu, you will drive to the Rongai (Nalemoru) Gate near the Kenya border. We begin our climb on this unspoilt wilderness route. The walk then starts to climb consistently, but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife. The thickness of the forest declines and the first camp is located at the edge of the moorland zone at an elevation of 2600 meters. It offers an extensive view over the Kenyan plains. The first day is only a half-day walk. Day 3: Kikelelwa Camp: The morning walk is a steady ascend up to the ‘Second Cave’ (3,450 m.) with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern icefields on the crater rim. After lunch, we leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. the Upper Kikelewa campsite is situated on a small plateau above the valley. Past the Kikelewa Caves at 3750 meters, there are giant senecios) Day 4: Mawenzi Turn Hut: On this day as you climb the steep grassy slopes which is going to be a short one, you’re rewarded with an all around view and a tangible sense of the surrounding wilderness area. We leave vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at “Mawenzi” (4,300 m.), spectacularly situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatisation. Day 5: Kibo Hut: We cross the lunar desert of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut (15,400 ft) at the bottom of the crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for an early morning final ascent. Day 6: Summit walk: We start the final and most demanding part of the climb by torchlight around 1 a.m. We plod very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point (18,600 ft). We rest here for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three-hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo Hut (15,400 ft) is surprisingly fast and, after some refreshments, we continue the descent to Horombo Huts (12,200 ft). Day7: Horrombo Hut Down to Marangu Gate: A steady descend takes us down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700m.), the first stopping place at the Marangu route. We then continue descending through lovely lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1,830 m.). . Dinner and overnight at Arusha Safari Lodge: Half board. Day 8: Game drive in Tarangire National Park: Today we drive to Tarangire National Park, for excellent game viewing. Tarangire is a small park which offers some excellent sights. Generally in the dry seasons Tarangire comes alive as wildlife and birdlife congregate on the Tarangire River, which is a permanent source of water. We spend the night in our lodge beautifully set inside the park with stunning views and a unique atmosphere. ILate in the afternoon, we’ll be having a brief journey from the park to our lodge. Dinner and overnight at Kirurumo Lodge: Full board. Day 9: Game drive in Serengeti National Park: We head towards the Serengeti National Park. En route there is an opportunity to visit Olduvai Gorge. It is within this steep sided ravine that Louis and Mary Leakey made some of the world’s most important archaeological discoveries in the 1950s. Here in a small museum we are able to see evidence of our ancestors that have been dated back 2.5 million years. After lunch we drive into the Serengeti itself and the rest of the afternoon is spent game viewing in the vast plains that are broken only by stands of acacia trees and the occasional kopje. In December, January and February we will normally meet the migration with large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle. There are always plenty of resident animals, such as giraffe, buffalo, and elephant, and many large predators such as lion, cheetah, and leopard. We return to our special tented camp for the night. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Lobo Wildlife Lodge: Full board. Day 10: Game drive in Serengeti National Park: We have another full day in this wonderful park, rising early to make the most of our time. Our guides will choose the best spotting locations for the time of year; we can spend time at the Hippo pool watching these majestic animals laze about in the cool water happily living alongside the crocodiles, watch a big pride of lions, be in the middle of the migration, sometimes surrounded by wildebeest, sometimes by zebras, which travel with the wildebeest. We journey from the wide open plains to the kopjes: these volcanic rocky outcrops provide protection and shelter for a wide variety of animals and from the top we can look out across the vast grasslands of the Serengeti. This diverse and interesting landscape will provide us with the ultimate in game viewing, we will hopefully see all of the plain games; elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions and it you are lucky the elusive leopard and cheetah, as well as huge amounts of interesting bird life, from the elegant secretary birds to the flightless ostrich. We return to our special tented camp for the night. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Lobo Wildlife Lodge: Full board. Day 11: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater: We start the day with an early morning game drive before heading to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ngorongoro is a special place in that it is a Conservation Area, not a National Park; this means that the whole area is managed for both the animals and the local Masai people who graze their cattle alongside the indigenous wildlife. During the drive in Ngorongoro we have a chance to glimpse something of the Masai way of life. After stopping at the entrance gate, where there is a chance to learn more about this fascinating volcanic landscape, we will drive around the rim of the Crater itself, and from here we can look down and see the herd of wildebeest or buffalos. Finally we descend into the crater. The crater walls provide a natural sanctuary for the animals, which means there is plenty to see: lions, elephants, buffalo, rhino and leopard (if you are lucky). The only animal you won’t see in here is a giraffe, whose long legs are unable to cope with the steeps sides of the crater. In the late afternoon we travel back to our special tented camp. Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge: Full board. Day 12: A full day game drive in Ngorongoro Crater. Today we will descend 2000 feet (over 600 meters) to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater for your crater tour. Here you we will explore the forest areas inhabited by monkeys and elephants, the lake area, where we may see flamingos. We will also visit the open savannah where the lions hunt. Picnic lunch will be served in the crater. In late afternoon we make a short journey to your Lodge. Dinner and overnight at Kirurumo Lodge: Full board. Day 13: Game drive in Lake Manyara National Park: We depart from your lodge and proceed to Lake Manyara National Park. Although small in size, this park is one of the most diverse reserves in the country. Lake Manyara covers two thirds of the park. At the backdrop is the wall of the Great Rift Valley, before which lies the ground water forest, areas of open grassland near the lake foreshore, and the Soda Lake. We enjoy a picnic lunch in this area, which consists of open grassy areas, hot springs, dense woodlands and steep mountainsides. Lake Manyara National Park is a birding paradise that has more than 350 species of bird. The park is also famed for its unique and elusive tree-climbing lions. After lunch time we will drive direct to Kilimanjaro International Airport for the evening flight. Day 14: Arrive in Zanzibar. Arrival at Zanzibar Airport anytime you will meet us at the airport and pick up with private transfer to Stone town. Dinner and overnight stay at Tembo Hotel: Half board. Day 15: Guided trip in Stone town. Your program starts with a morning visit by walk on our Historical Stone Town Tour. This tour takes you through fabled Stone Town, where history appears to stand still. With visits to the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum (People’s Palace) and the Arab Fort amongst others, it is a fascinating look at the essence of Zanzibar. You will see Zanzibar’s bustling market, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded doors, two cathedrals and countless mosques! Dinner and overnight stay at Tembo Hotel: Half board. Day 16: Spice farm and Jozani Forest trip. Today you go on an excursion to the spice and fruit plantations close to Stone town for the famous Spice Tour. We have developed a special Spice Tour with in depth information not only about spices, but also organically grown herbs and a detailed description about their traditional uses in medicine cosmetics and cooking. After the tour we invite for an opulent lunch at our guides’ home, where you can taste the spices and fruits. After lunch we take you to your beach resort. On the way you pass Jozani Forest, the last habitat of the rare endemic Red Colobus Monkey. With a local guide you stroll through Jozani Chwaka National Park and look at the rare monkeys. If you wish you can even wander down the boardwalk to the fascinating Mangrove Ecosystem. Dinner and overnight stay at Tembo Hotel: Half board. Day 17: Dolphin Trip. One day you go to an excursion to Kizimkazi. Situated on the southern point of the island, Kizimkazi fishing village is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins and Humpback dolphins, which can often be sighted following a short boat trip from the village. If you are lucky, you may be able to swim quite close to the dolphins, which can be a very rewarding experience. We are doing this trip in the afternoon to avoid the crowds of tourists in the morning, which in big numbers disturbing the dolphins. Dinner and overnight stay at Tembo Hotel: Half board. Machame Route
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Machame Route
$ 1990 7 Days Machame Route
Tumblr media
Known as the "Whiskey" route, the Machame route is now the most popular route on the mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. The Machame route is considered a difficult route, and is better suited for more adventurous folks and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. The route begins from the south, then heads east, traversing underneath Kilimanjaro's southern ice field before summiting. The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although seven days is recommended. The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. However, due to the heavy crowds, it loses some of its spendor. Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp We depart Moshi or Arusha for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead. Upon arrival at trailhead, we begin hiking through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site. Lunch on route either hot lunch or packed lunch. Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,350 ft Distance: 11 km/7 miles Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rain Forest The drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate takes about 50 minutes. We’ll pass through the village of Machame which is situated on the lower slopes of the mountain region. Leaving behind the park gate, we’ll walk through the dense rain forest up the ridges until we reach the Machame Camp. Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp We continue on the trail leading out of the rain forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 Camp. Here we catch our first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau. Lunch on route either hot lunch or packed lunch. Elevation: 9,350 ft to 12,500 ft Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Heath We leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path up to a steep, rocky ridge. On the Shira Plateau, we pass through heather and open moorlands, then cross a large river gorge to Shira 2 Camp. Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft Distance: 7 km/4 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Lava Tower to Barranco Camp Elevation: 15,190 ft to 13,044 ft Distance: 3 km/2 miles Hiking Time: 2-3 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert We continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. Through the Senecio Forest, we descend down to Barranco Camp to an altitudinal level of 13,000 ft. Even if you start and end at the same altitude, it is very beneficial for acclimatization. Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert We begin the day by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Then the climbing of a non-technical but steep 900 ft long cliff begins. As we desend down, we cross a series of hills and valleys until we reach the Karanga Valley. Another steep climb will lead us to Karanga Camp. This will be a shorter day which is meant to acclimatize your body properly. Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft Distance: 4 km/2 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert We leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. This point marks the completion of the southern circuit. It offers mesmerizing view of the summit from multiple angles. Here, we’ll be making our camp and rest for the rest of the day and have dinner to prepare for the upcoming summit day. Viewable from this position are two peaks, namely, Mawenzi and Kibo. Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 7-8 hours Habitat: Arctic Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp Elevation: 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft Distance: 12 km/7 miles Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Rain Forest Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft Distance: 10 km/6 miles Hiking Time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Rain Forest On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate and collect the summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel in Arusha. Includes Excludes Hotel lodging the night before and the night after the climb (dinner and breakfast included) (double occupancy). Quality, waterproof, four-season private mountain sleeping tents Professional, experienced, mountain guides: All Park fees Rescue fees All meals while on the Mountain Arrival and Departure transfers Guides, Porters, cook salaries and park fees Quality Mess tents with table and chairs Large portions of fresh, healthy, nutritious food Clean, purified drinking water Private, portable chemical flush toilets Crisis management and safety procedures Fair and ethical treatment of porters Summit Emergency Oxygen Walking Poles Sleeping Mattress Flying Doctor Service Tanzania Visa: $50 per person on arrival Personal Expenses (e.g. laundry, telephone, beverages, etc.) Meals not listed above Optional Tours (short safari after your climb etc) Tips and any items of personal nature.
